The First Britons - Tim Minchin, Prof Chris Stringer and Dr Selina Brace

The Infinite Monkey Cage returns for a brand-new series, with Professor Adam Rutherford and comedian Jessica Fostekew swinging into the cage as guest presenters. In this first episode, they find out who were the very first people to land on the British Isles… if they even were Isles at all. Joined by anthropologist Professor Chris Stringer, geneticist Dr Selina Brace and comedian Tim Minchin, they learn that our British ancestors got to hang out with hippopotamuses, uncover what ancient DNA can tell us about man’s earliest best friends, and discover that some Homo sapiens became more than just friends with our Neanderthal cousins... The panel also gets to the bottom of some of the most pressing scientific debates: like if Cheddar Man was really a looker and whether the Brits have always had bad teeth. Making Waves

What happens when you give water a really good shake? You might expect splashing, spilling and general aquatic chaos - but under exactly the right conditions, something much stranger can happen... In this episode, Hannah Fry and Dara Ó Briain dive into the world of 'Faraday waves': amazing geometric patterns that, in certain circumstances, will appear on the surface of a vibrating liquid. They discover how the renowned physicist Michael Faraday accidentally discovered this remarkable phenomenon in the 19th Century; debate whether they could ever occur in a swimming pool; and find out what on earth alligators have to do with it. Along the way, the pair encounter eerie ‘square’ seas and learn about new ways satellites are helping us to understand the ocean’s wildest waves! If you have an everyday mystery for the team to investigate, contact them on curiouscases@bbc.co.uk. The Right Way To Open A Shaken Soda Can

A can of fizzy drink has been violently shaken. The pressure is building, the bubbles are ready to erupt, and Michael Stevens is about to open it. But Hannah Fry has a trick up her sleeve. Can a few taps really prevent an explosion? This week on The Rest Is Science, Hannah and Michael begin with the surprisingly complicated physics of carbonation before tackling a much bigger question: can we really trust science? From the replication crisis and scientific studies that fail to stand up to scrutiny, to the strange incentives that shape what gets published, they explore why even respected scientific discoveries can turn out to be wrong...and why that might not be such a bad thing.Along the way, they investigate whether Archimedes really could have moved the Earth with a long enough lever, why aircraft are designed to withstand enormous pressure changes, and what happens when we lose our curiosity.Plus, an unexpected discussion about nuns, the dangers of absolute certainty, and why asking questions might be one of the most important things we can do.-------------------"For more information about Cancer Research UK, their research, breakthroughs and how you can support them, visit https://cancerresearchuk.org/restisscienceCancer Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), Scotland (SC041666), the Isle of Man (1103) and Jersey (247). The Smell of Hell

Throughout human history, there’s been one element we’ve always associated with death. Just the smell of it is an alarm bell that says, “something here is dangerous.” But what if our noses have been wrong all along? In this episode of our series Viscera: Gripping Tales of the Human Body, we take you to a live performance in Boston where we reveal how this much-maligned element might be better understood as the smell of life. LATERAL CUTS: Want to see a Viscera show? Join us for Radiolab Presents: Viscera, live in New York City on Thursday, November 5th. The climate changing power of 400 billion toasters

Back in May, we checked in on the developments in the eastern Pacific’s ocean currents, that we call El Niño. We said that stirrings in the surface suggested there might just be quite a big one. Now, it seems, everyone is talking about it, and it’s definitely big. What is the El Niño? And what is it really up to? Mark Maslin, Professor of Physical Geography at University College London, tells us. This week the film Whalefall opens in cinemas - think Jonah, but with a lot more about the intricacies of whale digestion. But, is it an excellent bit of Hollywood nonsense? Or is it even remotely possible for this to happen? And even if it isn’t, can we still learn useful things about sperm whale biology? Only one man can answer that question...Deadly Steve Backshall. For the next few weeks we talk to scientists from around the world, nominated for this year's John Maddox Prize, and whose evidence-based contributions to public discourse has not been universally well received. Dr Cyriac Abby Philips is a clinical hepatologist, based in Kerala, India, who is famous in his country for speaking out against traditional Indian medicine. Presenter: Tom Whipple Producer: Ben Mitchell, Alex Mansfield, Katie Tomsett, Keiran Manetta-Jones Production co-ordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth Editor: Martin Smith

12 UFOs at Lockheed? Unpacking Jay Stratton’s Claims

In a special midweek show, I’m joined by Pavel to dig into Jay Stratton’s new book, Out of the Shadows. Does it move the UFO conversation forward, or leave us with more claims than answers? We discuss: • Claims that Lockheed held 12 recovered non-human craft and that reverse engineering had succeeded.• Accounts of recovered beings and the questions these stories leave unanswered.• Stratton’s personal encounters and what he means by seeing non-human intelligence firsthand.• His criticism of Sean Kirkpatrick and warnings about manufactured whistleblowers.• Where his account fits alongside David Grusch and Lue Elizondo, including questions over AATIP’s history. We also look at Stratton’s television interviews, the divided reaction to the book, and why distinguishing personal experience, professional knowledge and secondhand accounts matters. What deserves serious follow-up, what needs evidence, and what should Stratton be asked next? Contains spoilers for Out of the Shadows. 🔥 Support the show & get bonus content: 🛸 YouTube Memberships: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHw9Lru3EcpRQyM7AI5TlmA/join 🛸 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/ThatUFOPodcast 🛸 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/that-ufo-podcast/id1511121397 🛸 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7wnXUAQ3vwdsX1BoyaEvjZ 🛸 Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ThatUFOPodcast 📲 Connect with the show: Twitter: @UFOUAPAM Facebook, Instagram & YouTube: That UFO Podcast YouTube: YouTube.com/c/ThatUFOPodcast Email: UFOUAPAM@gmail.com All links: https://linktr.ee/ufouapam Official Website: ThatUFOPodcast.com 👍 Don’t forget to subscribe, like & leave a review — it really helps! • If the AMOC Collapses - Could We Reverse the Damage?

If the AMOC Collapses - Could We Reverse the Damage?

Episode 405 The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)  is a major system of ocean currents that plays a vital role in Earth’s climate. If it collapses, the consequences could be catastrophic. We could see ice-age level winters in Europe, coupled with scalding hot summers - and impacts on food production around the world. The trouble is it’s already weakening. That’s why scientists are building an early warning system that'll warn us of imminent AMOC collapse. But will a warning come soon enough for us to act - and will anyone actually listen? The team explains how the warning system would work, what happens if the AMOC does collapse and how soon it could happen. Plus they look at new research which suggests the AMOC may not be a classic tipping point - because we may be able to resuscitate it even if it stops. To discuss this, Penny Sarchet and Rowan Hooper are joined by climate reporters Alec Luhn and Madeleine Cuff.  To read more about these stories, visit https://www.newscientist.com/ Image Credit: Tipping Points: CC BY 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=148459736 Learn more about your ad choices. • Something Weird Is Going On With Placebos

Something Weird Is Going On With Placebos

For the past few decades, something strange has been happening in clinical trials. Painkillers aren't getting worse, but the placebos they're tested against appear to be getting better. In one landmark study, the advantage of pain medication over placebo shrank from 27.3% in 1996 to just 8.9% in 2013. Even stranger? This trend was found almost entirely in American trials. In this episode of The Rest Is Science, Professor Hannah Fry and Michael Stevens (Vsauce) investigate the extraordinary science of the placebo effect; how our expectations influence pain, why belief can change the way our bodies respond, and what this means for the future of medicine. Why does the way a treatment is presented matter so much? And how can simply expecting something to hurt actually make it hurt? But the placebo effect doesn't stop at medicine. From pedestrian crossing buttons that do nothing to the surprising psychology of road safety, Hannah and Michael explore just how easily our expectations can shape our experience of the world. ------------------- "For more information about Cancer Research UK, their research, breakthroughs and how you can support them, visit https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/our-research/rest-is-scienceCancer Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), Scotland (SC041666), the Isle of Man (1103) and Jersey (247).
