Danger, Will Robinson: The Limits of AI, Health Care Ethics, and Human Wisdom

"Danger, Will Robinson!" sounded like science fiction in 1965. Today, the warning behind that iconic catchphrase is dangerously relevant. Artificial intelligence can answer questions, imitate voices, persuade voters, and automate complex tasks. But as AI enters healthcare—predicting treatment success, hospitalization risks, and life expectancy—a critical question emerges: How much authority should we give machines over decisions that shape human lives? In this episode of Everyone Dies, Dr. Marianne Matzo and Charlie Navarrette explore what 270+ AI researchers say about artificial intelligence safety, why a medical prediction is not a human value, and why machine death differs from human grief. https://bit.ly/4hFQajS Key Takeaways Understanding AI Risk Dynamics: Learn why AI systems don't need to be evil or conscious to cause severe harm—only given incomplete goals or premature authority.Probability vs. Preference: Discover why even perfectly accurate AI predictions in health care cannot define a patient's values, goals, or what makes life meaningful. The Importance of Oversight: Identify why meaningful human control, transparency, and organizational accountability are essential as AI moves into critical decision-making roles.Timestamps 00:00 - Intro: Looking at Modern AI Through a 1960s Lens01:40 - Recipe of the Week: Skylab Butter Cookies (1973 NASA Mission Snack)02:41 - Lost in Space, Can a Machine "Die," and AI Companion Grief09:51 - The 5 Real Risks of AI (Persuasion, Deception, and Action)20:17-Medical Predictions vs. Human Values: Who Makes the Final Call?15:45 -The Soul of a New Machine & Preserving Human Judgment33:42: Outro with Quote from Will RodgersResources & Links: This Week's Recipe: Printable Skylab Butter Cookies card on our website.Featured Research: MIT Sloan 272 AI Expert Risk AnalysisRelated Episodes: S5E19: Grieving in the Digital World means Never Having to Say Goodbye…but is it Best?S6E39: When Families Don't Hear the Truth: Why We Ignore Poor PrognosesS5E18: How to be Prepared for the Digital Afterlife#ArtificialIntelligence #AISafety #AIEthics #AIHealthcare #MedicalEthics #PatientAutonomy #DangerWillRobinson #PalliativeCare #EndOfLifeCare #EveryoneDiesPodcast Support the show 🎧 Listen to more episodes: https://www.every1dies.org - also get notes, links and expanded resources Follow Us: Facebook | Instagram | YouTube   Email: mail@every1dies.org

Life After Lymphoma: R-CHOP, Remission and Survivorship

A diagnosis of cancer changes how people think about their health, their future, and their everyday lives. For people diagnosed with blood cancers such as Waldenström macroglobulinemia or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the path from diagnosis through treatment and remission can bring both relief and ongoing uncertainty. In this episode of the Everyone Dies podcast, we talk with Karen Wolfe, a nurse practitioner about what it means to live after a lymphoma diagnosis, including the experience of receiving treatment with R-CHOP chemotherapy and transitioning into remission. For many cancer survivors, completing treatment does not mean leaving cancer completely behind. Follow-up appointments, scans, changes in the body, and concerns about recurrence can become part of a new reality. Many survivors describe learning how to balance gratitude for remission with the uncertainty of not knowing what the future holds. Learn the emotional impact of living with a cancer history, why uncertainty is a common experience after treatment, and strategies survivors use to regain their health, confidence and focus on what matters most. https://bit.ly/4rlUXvc This episode explores: What Waldenström macroglobulinemia and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma are How treatments such as R-CHOP are used for aggressive lymphomas Why remission can bring both relief and new concerns The emotional adjustment after cancer treatment ends Living with follow-up care and the possibility of recurrence Cancer changes the story, but it does not have to define the whole story. Cancer Emergencies: Spinal Cord Compression & Warning Signs You Can’t Ignore

Most people associate cancer with ongoing treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, but the illness itself can trigger sudden, life-threatening oncologic emergencies. In part two of our cancer emergency series, Dr. Marianne Matzo breaks down metastatic spinal cord compression—a critical condition affecting up to 10% of cancer patients that can cause rapid paralysis or permanent nerve damage if left untreated.  Learn the major red flag symptoms, including sudden severe back pain, loss of bowel or bladder control, and leg weakness, alongside key diagnostic steps and immediate treatments.  Charlie also shares the historic story of the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane and Grace Doyle’s bravery, a recipe for Zesty Hurricane Chicken Wings, and a moving perspective on finding life after profound loss.  Listen now and get show notes: https://bit.ly/4gRr1lC  #CancerEmergency #SpinalCordCompression #Oncology #EveryoneDiesPodcast  Timestamps: 00:00 Intro: When Cancer Becomes a Sudden Emergency 01:55 Martin Short’s Journey Through Joy and Loss 04:34 Recipe: Zesty Hurricane Chicken Wings 05:00 The 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane & Grace Doyle’s Legacy 09:22 Oncologic Emergencies: Recognizing Signs That Save Lives 11:08 Spinal Cord Compression: Metastatic Risks & Red Flag Symptoms 14:07 A Father’s Perspective: Rebuilding Life After Severe Loss 16:04 Outro with words from Julia Loius-DreyfusSupport the show 🎧 Listen to more episodes: https://www.every1dies.org - also get notes, links and expanded resources Follow Us: Facebook | Instagram | YouTube   Email: mail@every1dies.org
