Ukraine accuses Russia of hitting school used as aid centre

President Zelensky described as utterly horrific a Russian attack in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia that killed at least 26 people. He said the first air strike was on a school building which was being used as an aid distribution centre. It was followed by nine more bombs targeting a shelter where people were taking cover. Among those killed in the second attack were police and rescue workers who had gone to help. Also: final campaigning has been taking place in the United States on the eve of the midterm elections, which President Trump has described as the most important "in our lifetime". We hear from a man in the Netherlands whose parents opted for duo-euthanasia, where a person receives a lethal injection at the same time as a loved one.

US Midterms Election Day, Freezer Hack Hits Europe, Hungary Opens Secret Files

Your morning briefing. All the news you need to start your day.On today's podcast:(1) Voters across the US go to the polls today, passing judgment on the first half of Donald Trump's second term. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are being contested as well as 36 State governor races. Republicans currently control both chambers of congress -- but polls point to significant Democratic gains that could flip those majorities.(2) Supermarkets across Europe were hit by suspected cyberattacks that resulted in sudden changes in the temperatures of their fridges and freezers on Monday, echoing a more widespread problem in France last month.(3) Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government has been granted more authority by the country’s supreme leader to pursue peace talks, as President Donald Trump hinted at progress in negotiations.(4) Gold is trading slightly lower today, after its biggest jump in two months yesterday as hopes of progress in US-Iran peace talks eased inflation anxiety. Despite the pressure from oil and interest rates, demand from a key group of buyers has remained strong.(5) Walt Disney is moving toward thousands of job cuts with the entertainment giant asking some managers to target 20% in annual cost savings, according to people familiar with the matter.(6) Apple delivered a mixed outlook to investors in its first quarterly report under Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, with narrower profit margins overshadowing an upbeat sales forecast.(7) Six months after his resounding defeat of Orbán’s Fidesz party, Magyar is moving as fast as he can. That includes combing through mountains of files seeking evidence of corruption or theft of public money on Orbán’s watch.Podcast Conversation: Where to invest $1,000,000 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hoax nuclear alerts after cyber attacks on Russia and Ukraine

Day 1,709. Today, after nearly 800 people make it back to Ukraine having endured years of Russian occupation in Oleshky, President Zelensky thanked First Lady Melania Trump for her efforts, and then sent a message of a different sort to her husband the president, by bombing three Russian oil refineries over the weekend; an act that had the Kremlin complaining to the US President that he’d been ‘disobeyed’. We report on possibly a hack against the Ukrainian emergency air alert app, followed almost immediately by a similar system being hit in Russia. Later, we hear directly from Kyiv from the commander of the only expat-manned air defence unit in the Ukrainian armed forces. In Moscow's Shadows 269: White Flags and Red Banners

This week's conversation between Finland’s Alexander Stubb, Norway’s Jonas Gahr Støre and Vladimir Putin certainly ruffled some feathers. Setting aside the did-he-didn't-he fluff about whether Putin delivered another of his historical lectures (anonymous sources say so, but I'm willing to believe the on-the-record denials from Stubb and Støre), it's a useful start (and no more than that) to European diplomacy with agency. Europe cannot outsource dialogue with Moscow to to the White House and then act surprised when it lacks leverage.  Meanwhile, it's looking at a rare piece of good news from a ghastly conflict: the temporary Oleshki ceasefire and humanitarian mission. Even a small ceasefire, properly observed by both Russia and Ukraine, matters. It shows what can be achieved through unexpected intermediaries and professional coordination, and why dismissing every contact as “just propaganda” risks missing the building blocks that any future settlement will require. (PS: originally, I managed to get Kharkiv and Kherson mixed up! Has been edited to correct) After the break, I shift to Russian domestic politics and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation: election setbacks, protest voting, budget posturing, and the widening gap between a pro-Kremlin leadership and a more restless grassroots. I look at inequality arguments, the convenient “bad boyars” alibi, and the growing pressure on regional activists who take opposition too seriously. The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. Poland's court fight boils over

Poland's long-simmering rule-of-law issue reached boiling point this weekend. So, what now? On today's show, Zoya Sheftalovich and Kathryn Carlson unpack Prime Minister Donald Tusk's efforts to undo judicial appointments made under the previous right-wing Law and Justice government. Tusk's administration argues that removing these PiS-era appointees is essential to bringing Poland back into line with EU rule-of-law standards. But after this weekend's turmoil, could the push backfire? And what could it mean for Tusk's support ahead of next year's elections? Then, on to a crisis closer to home: Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever offered his resignation to King Philippe Monday morning, after failing to reach a budget agreement for 2027. Does that mean the government will collapse? Zoya and Katie go through what happens next. And finally, RFK Jr.’s Make American Healthy Again campaign is coming to Brussels ... at least when it comes to ultra-processed foods. What are your thoughts on unhealthy, processed snacks and junk food? How should the bloc tackle them? Write in and let us know: You'll find us on WhatsApp here or at +32 491 05 06 29. Articles mentioned in this episode: Crisis over top court shapes Poland’s battle lines before 2027 election. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s food fight is coming to Brussels. King mulls De Wever’s resignation as Belgian budget talks fail. This episode was produced by Saga Ringmar. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
