When I first stumbled across this podcast, I thought it would be the last one I’d want to listen to. I love watching horror movies, so why would I need to hear them recapped for a non-horror-fan audience? Joke’s on me, because this is now my favoritest podcast ever. Emily, Henley, and Sammy are such great interpreters of the genre, smart and funny with unique perspectives; listening to their take is getting a whole new perspective on movies I love (or don’t). They’re so interesting and hilarious that I even sprung for the Patreon tier to hear them talk about things that are NOT horror movies.
Some recommendations for episodes if you want to try the podcast out:
Sammy is the horror fan and main recapper. One excellent Sammy episode is “Obsession”—it’s such a fun movie and Sammy has a rollicking good time recapping it. Also “We Need to Talk About Kevin”—her barely contained glee while she describes the worst possible events is hysterical! My favorite part of this podcast is Sammy’s excitement while describing things she knows Henley and Emily are going to hate hearing.
Also classic Sammy: Her deadpan recitation of Narf/Scrunt/Eagle/Blue World law in the instantly legendary “Lady in the Water” episode.
Emily’s episodes are great because she really gets into performing them. Her recap of Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is a tour de force of accents and voices and gothic drama. At the other end of the spectrum, her embodiment of Mark Wahlberg and Zoey Deschanel’s dull voices and affects in “The Happening” was matched only by her go-for-the-gusto performance of the wind.
Meanwhile, Henley rocks a phlegmatic temprament and a voice made for ASMR. My favorite episodes of hers are when she recaps Tim Burton movies, because she has absolutely no patience for all that quirkiness. “Nightmare Before Christmas” is the best and “Sleepy Hollow” is great; also check out her retelling of Ronald Dahl’s “The Witches.” “The some stuff happens with a cat, whatever…”
If you’ve ever watched a horror movie and had a good time discussing it with a friend, check out this podcast! You won’t be disappointed.
