Rise to Lead: The Leadership Shift That Changes Everything

On this episode, I sit down with Doug Dentler, CFO and author of Rise to Lead, for an honest, insightful conversation about what it really takes to elevate your leadership in today's workplace. Doug shares the highs and lows of his corporate journey, from early days "mimicking" leadership styles he thought would help him succeed, to reaching a breakthrough when he realized true leadership starts from within. Drawing from decades in finance and executive roles, Doug opens up about the transformative moments that led him to create the RISE Framework: Root yourself in purpose, Implement an intentional plan, Serve others, and Elevate with positivity. In our discussion, Doug reflects on how leadership has evolved from the days of tough accountability to a more human, purpose-driven approach. He reveals powerful stories of personal change - how re-centering his purpose impacted both his career and family, why coaching was a turning point, and the legacy that comes from serving others and fostering positive cultures. Doug's practical tips for being intentional, learning from mistakes, and investing in people will inspire any leader, seasoned or aspiring, to rethink what's possible in their own journey. About Doug – Doug Dentler is a financial executive and leadership strategist with more than 25 years of experience across Fortune 500 and privately held organizations. He combines operational finance expertise with a disciplined, people-centered leadership approach that drives execution and performance. He leads complex, global operations, including oversight of more than $1.5B in revenue, 1,900 employees, and multi-site organizations. He builds teams that operate as strategic partners, aligns cross-functional leaders around clear priorities, and implements processes that increase efficiency, accountability, and results. Grounded in values learned working in his family's business, he serves others with transparency, consistency, and a commitment to both performance and people. Colleagues consistently recognize his ability to remain steady under pressure, quickly identify core issues, and guide teams toward focused execution. But he also experienced burnout, disconnection, and promotions that felt hollow. He was climbing but not growing, until he finally learned to lead as his authentic self. He developed the RISE Framework to give leaders and teams what he wished he had – a clear, proven system for leading from the inside out, backed by time-tested leadership principles. His work strengthens leaders, improves team engagement, and creates cultures that sustain performance. 11 National Championships: Kelly Amonte Hiller on Winning Through Adversity

Join me and legendary Northwestern women's lacrosse coach Kelly Amonte Hiller for an insightful and inspiring conversation about championship culture, adversity, and the mindset that drives sustained excellence. Kelly's journey is a masterclass in resilience and evolution—from leading her team through an uncharacteristically tough start to the season, to capturing her ninth national championship as a coach on home turf. She shares the behind-the-scenes process of overcoming setbacks, the power of reflection, and the importance of getting everyone "rowing in the same direction." Kelly opens up about the origins of her work ethic, the blue-collar values instilled by her family, and how embracing adversity and self-honesty have been critical for both personal and team growth. We dive deep into the philosophies that have shaped her dynastic program: a relentless commitment to hard work, the humility to look in the mirror, and the courage to constantly evolve. Kelly also discusses the impact of supporting her former players now turned coaches, the beauty of fostering growth in young women, and the ultimate legacy of her leadership—building a culture where true greatness is measured not just in wins, but in the long-lasting bonds formed along the way. About Kelly – Already a legend in the game as a player, Kelly Amonte Hiller has established herself as one of the sport's greatest coaches after building Northwestern Lacrosse into a dynasty. In May of 2005, Amonte Hiller etched her name in the annals of college athletics when she guided her upstart Northwestern team to an undefeated season and the first NCAA Lacrosse Championship ever won by a team outside the Eastern Time Zone, the first of an incredible nine national titles. Under Amonte Hiller's direction the Wildcats most recently claimed the 2026 NCAA National Championship, her ninth as the head coach of the program. Amonte Hiller became the first Division I lacrosse coach (men's or women's) to win nine national titles, guiding NU to a championship win on home soil for the first time since 1986 (Maryland). The 'Cats took down three IWLCA No. 1-ranked squads throughout the course of the season, the most in a campaign in NCAA History. Northwestern has made six consecutive appearances in the NCAA Semifinals (2019-26), reaching the finals the last four consecutive seasons. After resurrecting a Northwestern program that had not competed at the varsity level in more than 10 years, Amonte Hiller led the Wildcats to the national semifinals 10 years in a row from 2005 to 2014 and tied an NCAA record with eight consecutive title game appearances in the process. Northwestern's dominance since its breakthrough 2005 season has been nothing short of legendary. Since 2004, Northwestern has gone 63-13 (.829) in the NCAA Tournament, making Amonte Hiller the winningest coach in tournament history. Along the way, Amonte Hiller has produced the nation's Tewaaraton Award winner in eight different seasons as well as the Honda Sports Award recipient on 10 occasions. Northwestern has featured 75 IWLCA All-Americans and won a total of 13 IWLCA positional Player of the Year awards (four attacker, five midfielder and four defender). Northwestern's rapid rise to national prominence under Amonte Hiller — particularly in an area of the country rarely associated with women's lacrosse — has caught the eyes of many, in and out of lacrosse. In 2011, ESPN The Magazine named Amonte Hiller one of the 20 best recruiters across all college sports, joining the likes of other multiple-time NCAA champion coaches Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (men's basketball) and Anson Dorrance of North Carolina (women's soccer). In 2012, the Big Ten Network profiled the NU head coach as one of 12 Big Ten coaching icons in the conference's history, putting her in the company of Big Ten legends such as Bobby Knight (Indiana), Bo Schembechler (Michigan) and Dan Gable (Iowa). In 2026, the NCAA Championship game between the Wildcats and UNC set a record with 657,000 viewers, making the first championship game hosted at Northwestern the most-watched women's lacrosse game in history. In February of 2018, Amonte Hiller was announced as the head coach of United States Lacrosse Women's U19 team, where she guided the United States to a gold medal at the 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's U19 World Championship in Peterborough, Ontario. Four other Wildcats also found their way onto the team: Madison Doucette, Elle Hansen, Izzy Scane and Greta Stahl. Amonte Hiller led the United States to another gold medal at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's World Championship in Hong Kong, China, after beating Canada 23-6. She mentored five fellow Wildcats on the U20 roster during the championship run, including Francesca Argentieri, Noel Cumberland, Hannah Rudolph, Madison Smith, and Madison Taylor. During the 2026 season, Amonte Hiller reached 400 career wins with a road win against Penn State. All 400 wins came at the helm of Northwestern, as she became the sixth coach in Division I women's lacrosse history to reach the milestone. Brad Holcman, Former Hollywood Executive, Shares How to Use Your Unique Story to Impact the World

On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Brad Holcman—a Hollywood executive-turned-story coach—for an inspiring conversation about the power of story, embracing the unexpected, and using your unique journey to impact the world. Brad's journey is anything but typical: Growing up in Detroit, he followed his heart to California after college, left his management consulting job and worked his way from coffee runs at Paramount to shaping some of television's most memorable shows, including Sons of Anarchy, Intervention, 60 Days In, and Duck Dynasty. Along the way, Brad discovered that the most powerful way to connect, influence, and lead is through authentic storytelling—finding your "$2 bill" story that sets you apart and serves others. In this heartfelt exchange, Brad shares how moments of heartbreak, risk, faith, and family shaped his path—from defying the Hollywood "mountain" mindset to becoming a champion for entrepreneurs and leaders who want to find and share their own unforgettable narratives. He opens up about the lessons he learned in both success and struggle, the real reason story is transformative, and why being "the only"—not just the best—can change lives and organizations.   About Brad:   Brad Holcman is the founder of The $2 Bill Brand and one of the most unlikely voices in personal branding - a former Hollywood television executive who spent 25 years producing some of the most-watched unscripted television in America. As a 4-time Emmy-nominated executive producer, Brad developed and oversaw hit series across A&E, Fox, CBS, History, Netflix, Hulu, and BET - including 60 Days In, Duck Dynasty, Intervention, Sons of Anarchy, Homeland, Triple Digit Flip, and Zombie House Flipping - accumulating over $1.5 billion in content success. His job, every single day, was one thing: find the one thing that makes a person impossible to ignore and put it on a billboard. In 2024, Brad left the day to day of the entertainment industry to turn the camera around. He realized that the same principles used to build television stars could be used to build business leaders. He saw brilliant entrepreneurs and leaders struggling with obscurity - acting as commodities in crowded markets, competing on price when they should be competing on story. They were dollar bills in a wallet full of dollar bills. Drawing on a tradition taught by his Grandmother Charlotte, Brad created The $2 Bill Method. The $2 bill is the only bill people don't spend. It's the only bill that is memorable. It's the only bill people have a story about. It's not the best bill - it's the ONLY bill. Today, Brad helps entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners go from invisible to unforgettable by finding their ONLY Statement - the one sentence that tells the world why they are the only choice in their market. Through his O.N.L.Y. Framework - Own Your Difference, Narrow Your Focus, Lead With Your Story, You Are the Category - he teaches professionals how to stop sanding down their edges and start building a brand that people never forget. His philosophy is simple: "Don't be the best. Be the only." Beyond his professional work, Brad is a volunteer firefighter who was named Rookie of the Year in his mid-40s after training with the FDNY. He is a proud Midwest kid who moved to Hollywood out of spite - and somehow ended up on the red carpet. He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife Samantha and their two daughters. He is the creator of findyouronly.app - a free 3-minute assessment that helps entrepreneurs discover their $2 Bill factor and build a brand that people never forget. Britt Reid on Rebuilding His Life with Mission and Purpose After Losing Everything

On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Britt Reid—Super Bowl-winning coach, son of Andy Reid, and now an inspiring speaker dedicated to helping others overcome life's hardest moments.   Britt's journey is one of remarkable highs and deeply challenging lows. From growing up as the son of NFL head coach Andy Reid, to earning his place on the Kansas City Chiefs' coaching staff and celebrating a Super Bowl victory, Britt seemed to have it all. But behind the scenes, he battled addiction that ultimately led to a tragic accident, prison time, and the loss of his coaching career.   In this honest, hope-filled conversation, Britt opens up about the realities of addiction, the pain of losing his brother, the weight of causing harm to others, and the long, slow road to healing. He shares the "four pillars" passed down from his father that helped him survive and grow through adversity—eliminating distractions, creating energy, fearing nothing, and attacking everything head on. We explore how service, faith, and the willingness to start again have been crucial to his recovery, and why Britt is passionate about breaking the stigma by "eliminating the whisper" around addiction and mental health. Whether you're facing your own struggles or walking alongside someone who is, Britt's story is proof that redemption is possible and that our lowest points don't have to define us. Tune in for a powerful reminder: your hardest chapters can set the stage for your greatest impact.  About Britt: Britt Reid is a former Super Bowl Champion coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he coached the defensive line and outside linebackers under his father, Head Coach Andy Reid. Britt seemingly had it all, but under the surface was his life-long battles with substance abuse and alcoholism. What should have been the American dream became a living nightmare for so many when he got behind the wheel of a car after drinking. In an instant, Britt traded in his life of impact for an inmate number in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Today, Britt is out of prison and lives a life of service while working a program of recovery. His tale of humility, redemption, grace, grit and perseverance is a reminder and a living example to never give up and to always have hope. Dan Hurley: Building a Championship Culture and the Mindset Behind Great Teams

On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with legendary UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley for an honest and energizing conversation about building a championship culture, relentless leadership, and the transformative power of purpose-driven coaching.   From his early days learning from a Hall of Fame father, to guiding players through the rigors of college basketball's toughest moments, Dan opens up about the realities of forming a great team in the era of the transfer portal, NIL, and social media. He shares the values at the core of the UConn program—relentless competitive effort, mindful communication, a dedication to the "pack," and the consistent pursuit of growth—explaining how accountability and care come together in an environment that pushes players past their limits and deepens their belief in themselves.   Throughout this conversation, Dan reflects on the importance of love-tough coaching, the urgency of making an impact on young lives, and the crucial role that faith and self-development play in his own journey. Whether he's describing his mindful approach to team-building, the vulnerability he shares with his athletes, or the discipline and devotion it takes to chase excellence, Dan's story is both inspiring and down-to-earth.   About Dan: Dan Hurley is one of the most accomplished coaches in modern college basketball, leading the University of Connecticut back to national prominence since becoming the program's 19th head coach in 2018. In eight seasons at UConn, Hurley has compiled a 199-75 record, guided the Huskies to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three Final Fours in four seasons, back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2023 and 2024, and a national runner-up finish in 2026. His teams won 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament games from 2023-25, with all 12 victories during the championship runs coming by double digits—an NCAA record. Since 2022-23, UConn has posted a 126-28 record, the most successful four-year stretch in program history. Hurley was named the 2024 Naismith College Coach of the Year and BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading UConn to a school-record 37 wins, BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships, and the program's sixth national title. He owns the highest winning percentage in BIG EAST history (minimum 100 conference games) and has developed 12 NBA players, including four lottery selections, during his tenure. Prior to Connecticut, Hurley transformed programs at Rhode Island and Wagner, leading Rhode Island to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships. Across 16 collegiate seasons, he has amassed a 350-180 career record. A Jersey City native, Hurley was raised in one of basketball's most accomplished families. His father, Hall of Famer Bob Hurley Sr., built the legendary St. Anthony High School program, while his brother Bobby won two NCAA championships at Duke. Before entering the college ranks as a head coach, Hurley compiled a 223-21 record in nine seasons at St. Benedict's Prep, developing multiple future NBA players. Known for his relentless competitiveness, player development, and elite two-way teams, Hurley has become one of the defining figures in college basketball. In 2025, he became a New York Times bestselling author with his memoir, Never Stop: Life, Leadership and What It Takes to Be Great.
