As someone who turned to religion (and the Lutheran tradition) late in life— and with a doctorate in philosophy (in the continental tradition) in tow— this show has been a balm to my unfounded (if very typical) worry that faith was a matter of giving up on critical thinking. This show promotes philosophically informed, critically engaged thinking in the tradition of Lutheranism. It is helping me feel at home in this tradition while also clarifying some of its most difficult conundrums. Paul can get very theoretically dense some times as the perhaps inevitable consequence of a long life of thinking/writing in theology, but Sarah, though equal to Paul in her theological acumen, is there to draw out and clarify the more difficult points, often critically contributing and raising difficult, unaddressed questions while she does so. The dynamic works much better than I thought it would (would she always just echo the father she clearly loves? no, thank goodness). To use a very tired cliche, this show is a “game-changer” for my own inquiry in this tradition, and is an invaluable asset for anyone serious about the more difficult theoretical problems that arise for a thinker in a life of faith.
