Behind the Book: Chapter 6 - Stop Trying to Lose Weight

Text us a comment or question! What if the goal that's been driving your health and fitness journey for years... is actually the wrong goal? If you've spent the last decade - or maybe several decades - trying to lose the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds, this episode may completely change the way you think about your body. This week on The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, we're continuing the special Behind the Book series with a first look at Part II - Building a Body from my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life. And we're kicking off Part II with a statement that probably sounds a little crazy coming from a health and fitness coach: Stop trying to lose weight. Seriously. Because here's the truth -  nobody really wants weight loss. You don't actually want a smaller number on your bathroom scale. You want what you believe that smaller number will give you. More energy. More confidence. Better health. Freedom. Strength. Capability. The ability to travel, hike, play with your grandkids, get up off the floor, carry your own luggage, and keep saying YES to life. So maybe it's time to stop making weight loss the mission. Maybe it's time to start building a body. In this episode, you'll discover: Why focusing on weight loss can actually lead you toward the wrong behaviorsWhy losing 20 pounds isn't really what most people wantThe hidden problem with making a number on the scale your ultimate goalWhy traditional weight-loss goals come with a dangerous built-in finish lineThe difference between changing your weight and changing your identityWhy “I'm trying to get healthy” and “I'm a healthy person” are two very different mindsetsHow your identity influences your daily choicesWhy lasting transformation is about becoming, not dietingThe question that's far more powerful than “How much weight do I want to lose?”Why your new mission should be about the next 30 years, not the next 30 poundsHow shifting from shrinking to building can change the trajectory of your second half 📖 Help Me Make Fully Alive Better This book is still a work in progress, and the feedback I've received from listeners throughout this Behind the Bookseries has been phenomenal. Please keep it coming! What resonated with you in this chapter? Did anything challenge the way you've thought about weight loss? Have you experienced the shift from “trying to lose weight” to becoming someone who simply lives like a healthy, active person? Or was there something you disagreed with, didn't understand, or wanted me to explore more deeply? I want to hear all of it! 📧 Email me at coach@silveredgefitness.com I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive before it goes to print.   Coming Next... Next week, we'll continue Part II — Building a Body — with Chapter 7: Muscle Changes Everything Because if you want to remain strong, energetic, metabolically healthy, independent, and capable as you age, there's one asset we need to start protecting — and building. Muscle. Until then... Stop trying to become smaller. Start building the body your future requires. 🎉 The PrimeForge App is officially here! Start your FREE 7-day trial today! Behind the Book: Chapter 5 — Why “Eat Less, Move More” Stops Working

Text us a comment or question! Eat less. Move more. For decades, that’s been the default prescription for weight loss. And to be fair... it sounds perfectly logical. If you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories and burn more calories. But if the formula is really that simple, why are so many intelligent, motivated people still struggling? Why do we keep losing and regaining the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds? And why does it seem to get harder every time - especially after 50? In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I continue my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 5 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life. Chapter 5 is called “Why Eat Less and Move More Stops Working.” And this chapter represents an important turning point in the book. Because the problem isn't that you need to try harder. You may simply be trying to solve a building problem with a shrinking strategy. Most traditional diets are built around subtraction: Eat less. Cut calories. Remove carbs. Do more cardio. Burn more. Weigh less. Get smaller. But think about what you actually want from your body in the second half of life. More strength. More energy. More muscle. More confidence. More resilience. More freedom. More capability. Those aren't shrinking goals. They're building goals. In this episode, we'll explore why the traditional eat-less-and-move-more formula eventually breaks down, why doubling down with even more restriction and cardio can leave you frustrated and exhausted, and why sustainability matters far more than short-term results. I Want Your Feedback! Fully Alive is still being edited and refined, and you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the book before the final version is published. So I'd genuinely love to hear from you. What resonated? What challenged you? What didn't make sense? What would you like me to explore more deeply? And have you personally experienced the cycle of eating less, exercising more, losing weight... and eventually gaining it back? Send me your thoughts, stories, questions, and feedback at: coach@silveredgefitness.com I personally read every email, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive. And if you know someone over 50 who's still stuck believing they just need to eat less, move more, and try harder, please share this episode with them. Because maybe they don't need more willpower. Maybe they need a better blueprint. 🎉 The PrimeForge App is officially here! Start your FREE 7-day trial today! Click HERE to download for iOS. Click HERE to download for Android. Behind the Book: Chapter 4 - Is My Metabolism Broken?

Text us a comment or question! If you're over 50 and you've ever said - or even thought - "My metabolism is broken," this episode is for you. This week, I'm continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 4 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life. And in this chapter, we're tackling one of the biggest - and most discouraging - beliefs in the over-50 health and fitness world - that aging has somehow broken your metabolism. Because let's face it… it can certainly feel that way. You eat less. You exercise more. You try harder. And somehow the strategies that worked at 30 or 40 don't seem to work anymore. So what happened? In this chapter, I'll explain why your metabolism isn't some mysterious force conspiring against you - and why "broken" may be completely the wrong way to think about what's happening inside your body. Instead, we'll explore a much more powerful idea -  Adaptation. Your body is constantly responding to the environment you create and the signals you send it. Years of restrictive dieting. Loss of muscle. Reduced activity. Poor sleep. Stress. Repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight. Your body notices all of it - and adapts accordingly. But here's the incredibly good news - adaptation works both ways. The same body that adapted to years of restriction and inactivity can begin adapting to strength training, better nutrition, movement, recovery, and consistency. Your body isn't finished at 50. Or 60. Or 70. It's still listening. In This Episode, You'll Learn: What metabolism actually is—and what it isn'tWhy having a "slow metabolism" is more complicated than most people realizeWhy weight loss can become more difficult even when you're eating lessHow years of dieting can change the environment your body is responding toWhy muscle loss and declining activity matter so much after 50The difference between metabolic damage and metabolic adaptationWhy the bathroom scale can convince you nothing is working—even when your health is improvingWhy trying to force your body to lose weight may be the wrong approachHow strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and consistency send your body new signalsWhy your goal isn't to get your 25-year-old metabolism backAnd why the body you have today may be far more capable of change than you've been led to believe  The big takeaway? Stop asking "Is my metabolism broken?" Start asking "What has my metabolism been responding to?" Because once you stop treating your body like the enemy, you can begin creating an environment that encourages it to thrive. And that's where things get exciting.   📖 You're Helping Me Write This Book! Fully Alive is still being revised - and you're getting to hear it before the final version goes to print. That means I want your feedback. What resonated with you? What challenged something you believed? Was anything confusing? Did I leave something out? Do you have a story or experience that relates to this chapter? Send me an email at coach@silveredgefitness.com. I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.   And if you know somebody who's convinced their metabolism is broken, share this episode with them. They may not need another diet. They may simply need to understand that their body hasn't betrayed them.   Thanks for being part of this journey with me. Behind the Book: Chapter 3 – What Changed After 50?

Text us a comment or question! Does it feel like your body suddenly started playing by a different set of rules after 50? You’re not imagining it. In this third installment of the Behind the Book series, I share Chapter 3 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive, and tackle one of the most common questions I hear from men and women over 50… "Why does this feel so much harder than it used to?" For years, we've been told that getting older automatically means getting weaker, slower, heavier, and less capable. But what if that's only part of the story? In this chapter, you'll discover the critical difference between aging and decline, why muscle loss may be the hidden culprit behind many of the frustrations people experience after 50, and why your body is far more adaptable than you've been led to believe. Most importantly, you'll learn why your future health, strength, and vitality are not predetermined - and why your best years may still be ahead. In This Episode: Why weight loss feels different after 50The difference between aging and declineThe silent impact of muscle loss over timeWhy most people blame age for problems that started decades earlierThe surprising adaptability of the human bodyHow strength training changes the aging equationWhy "I'm just getting old" can become a dangerous beliefThe inspiring story of a client who achieved her first pull-up in her late fiftiesWhy your body is still listening—and still capable of changeThe enormous opportunity most people miss in the second half of life  I'd Love Your Feedback This book is still a work in progress, and your feedback genuinely helps shape the final manuscript. What resonated with you? Was there a story or idea that hit home? Did something challenge a belief you've held for years? Do you have your own story of becoming stronger, healthier, or more capable later in life? Send your thoughts, questions, stories, and feedback to: 📧 coach@silveredgefitness.com I personally read every email.   Share This Episode If you know someone who believes that everything inevitably goes downhill after 50, share this episode with them. It may be exactly the encouragement they need to hear.   About the Behind the Book Series Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life is my upcoming book designed to help men and women over 50 build a lean, strong, healthy, capable body - and create a life filled with energy, purpose, and vitality. Behind the Book: Chapter 2 - Why Eating Less Isn't the Answer

Text us a comment or question! What if one of the biggest reasons you're struggling to lose weight... is because you've been trying to eat too little? In this special Behind the Book episode, I'm sharing Chapter 2 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life. This chapter tackles one of the biggest lies we've been taught about weight loss - that getting healthy means living on salads, tiny portions, and constant hunger. If you've spent years believing that the hungrier you are, the better your diet is working, this episode may completely change the way you think about nutrition. You'll discover why so many diets work... until they don't... and why building a healthy body requires a completely different mindset than simply trying to become smaller. This isn't about giving you permission to eat junk food. It's about learning to fuel your body instead of fighting against it. In this episode you'll discover: Why "being good" with food often leads to late-night binge eatingThe hidden danger of the "Rabbit Food Trap"Why hunger is not a sign that your diet is workingThe critical difference between losing weight and building a healthy bodyWhy restriction creates short-term results—but often long-term frustrationHow decades of dieting can leave you feeling like your body is working against youWhy your body is actually trying to protect you—not sabotage youThe powerful mindset shift from thinking like a dieter to thinking like a builder  I'd Love Your Feedback! This book is still being written, and your feedback genuinely matters. Did something resonate? Was something confusing? Did a particular story or idea hit home? Email me directly at coach@silveredgefitness.com. I personally read every email, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive before it goes to print. Classic Rewind - How to Overcome Emotional Eating with Tricia Nelson

Text us a comment or question! This episode originally aired in February 2022.   Diets have gotten a bad rap recently. And it’s easy to see why. Research shows that the vast majority of dieters who lose weight gain it all back within 12 months, and sometimes with a little extra as an added bonus. More people than ever before are overweight, and more people than ever before are going on diets. What’s going on here? That fact that Americans collectively lose millions of pounds every year would suggest that diets do in fact work. So why are we continually struggling with long term sustainable weight loss?   What if diets aren’t addressing the real problem? Us humans are complex emotional creatures, and we eat for a wide variety of reasons. We eat when were hungry of course, but we also eat to celebrate holidays and special occasions, when we’re out with family and friends. But there’s a darker side to why we eat. Many of us unconsciously eat to numb painful emotions and feelings – we eat when we’re anxious, sad, depressed, and overwhelmed. Sand eating in this way ultimately brings on more pain, more feelings of shame, humiliation, and guilt – which feeds into a vicious downward spiral. And the best diet in the world isn’t going to address the root of this problem.   My guest today is Tricia Nelson. Tricia is the internationally acclaimed author of the book “Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now” and is an emotional eating expert who has helped thousands of people heal their relationships with food. Join us this week as Tricia shares her personal journey of recognizing and overcoming her own emotional eating disorder, why dieting won’t help you overcome emotional eating, how to know if you are an emotional eater, and if so, what steps you can take to gain control of your life and your health.     You can connect with Tricia in the following ways: Website: https://www.healyourhunger.com/ Heal You Hunger Podcast: https://www.healyourhunger.com/heal-your-hunger-2/ Book - Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now - https://www.amazon.com/dp/1521101108/ TedX Talk – Heal Your Hunger – What If Weight Loss Isn’t About Food? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVSe2vaxXXM Instagram - @tricianelson_ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HealYourHunger FB Group Secret Sauce to End Emotional Eating - https://www.facebook.com/groups/secretsaucetoendemotionaleating Are you and emotional eater quiz - https://www.healyourhunger.com/are-you-an-emotional-eater-or-food-addict/ 🎉 The PrimeForge App is officially here! Interested... or Committed? The Decision That Changes Everything After 50

Text us a comment or question! What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't a lack of information... it's a lack of conviction? If you're over 50, chances are you've read the books, listened to the podcasts, watched the YouTube videos, and tried more diets than you care to admit. You already know what to do. So why is lasting change still so hard? In this episode, Coach Kevin explores the difference between being interested in getting healthy and becoming committed to building an extraordinary second half of life. This isn't another episode about the "perfect diet" or the latest longevity hack. It's about making the decision that changes everything. You'll discover why curiosity is a great place to start - but a terrible place to stay, how "The Collector Trap" keeps so many people stuck, and why real transformation begins when you stop trying to get healthy and start becoming the kind of person who naturally lives that way. If you've ever felt like you're constantly preparing to change but never quite becoming different... this episode is for you. In This Episode You'll Learn: Why curiosity is a gift—but conviction is what creates lasting change. The hidden "Collector Trap" that keeps people consuming health information instead of transforming their lives. Why motivation is overrated and identity is everything. How conviction removes thousands of daily health decisions. Why healthy aging should become one of the most rewarding pursuits of your life. How to build a body that gives you more freedom, more options, and more life. The simple mindset shift that makes consistency easier. Why your future is shaped by your repeated actions—not your intentions.A powerful challenge to help you move from trying to becoming.  Your Challenge This Week Ask yourself one question, "Am I merely interested... or am I truly committed?" Then make one decision. Not to start another diet. Not to chase another challenge. Simply decide that you're no longer someone who's trying to get healthy. You're becoming the kind of person who naturally lives a healthy, strong, capable life. Then tomorrow morning... take one small step. And cast another vote for the person you're becoming.   Resources & Links 💪 Ready for a clear strength-training plan designed specifically for adults over 50?
