Zero Disturbance

Kambria Evans, The Teaching & Learning EMDR Consultant

Listen to the conversations therapists and clients should be having — but often aren’t. Zero Disturbance is a podcast about what makes therapy truly work. For therapists, we explore clinical reasoning, case conceptualization, EMDR, and intensive therapy design — so you can think more clearly and work more efficiently. For clients, we pull back the curtain on the therapy process — helping you understand what effective treatment looks like, what good collaboration feels like, and how to participate actively in your own healing. Because therapy works best when both people in the room understand the map. Inside each episode, you’ll hear: • How strong clinical thinking shapes outcomes • Why therapy sometimes stalls — and how to fix it • How intensives and brain-based therapy (EMDR, Brainspotting) can accelerate progress • What client-therapist collaboration should actually look like Download our FREE Resource Library at www.zerodisturbance.com/free-resources About Kambria Evans Kambria Evans holds a Master’s in Education from Vanderbilt University and has spent over 20 years designing high-impact learning experiences for adult professionals. 147: When EMDR Isn’t Working: Follow the System [Beneath the Protocol Series]

Stop Being Afraid of the Door: A New Way to Think About EMDR What happens when you approach a target in EMDR and instead of getting the response you expected, the client floods, dissociates, goes blank, becomes highly cognitive, or simply says, “I don’t know”? You knock on the door, and “something else” you didn’t plan on seems to happen. In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, we’re taking a closer look at one of the biggest fears many EMDR therapists carry: What if I open the door and too much comes rushing out? But there’s another question worth asking: What if everything that happens when we knock is information? This episode explores a more flexible approach to EMDR and brain-based therapy —one that pays attention not only to the target we planned to process, but to how the client's system responds in real time. In this episode, we explore: Why EMDR therapists can become caught between the fear of too much access and the fear of not enough access Why flooding, blocking, dissociation, sensations, emotions, protective responses, and unexpected memories can all provide clinically meaningful information The difference between access and readiness Why a client remembering a traumatic event does not automatically mean they are ready to process it How readiness can change depending on the portal being accessed—memory, sensation, emotion, image, belief, or protective response Why “I don’t know” may be a response to approaching activation rather than an absence of material How therapists can remain curious without becoming reckless—and cautious without becoming afraid of the client's internal world Why the goal isn't maximum access, but useful access How an activation-based lens can complement standard EMDR protocol How therapists can begin following the system rather than forcing a predetermined target Why the therapist’s own nervous system and relationship to activation matter in the room One of the central ideas in this episode is simple: Access is not the same as readiness. A client may be able to describe a traumatic event in incredible detail and still not have enough capacity to approach that material therapeutically. At the same time, they may have little conscious narrative access but still be able to safely approach a sensation, emotion, image, or protective response. That shift can change the way we understand EMDR, trauma processing, dissociation, nervous system responses, and brain-based therapy. The question to bring into your next EMDR session Instead of only asking: “Do I have access?” Consider asking: What happened when I approached the activation? What form is the activation taking? Who or what seems to be answering the door? Is the client sufficiently present to approach this right now? Am I responding to the client's system—or to my own fear about what might happen? Am I trying to force a particular portal or target to open? What happens if I become curious rather than corrective? What is the client's response telling me about their system? The goal isn't to force the door open. And it isn't to stand outside the door terrified of what's behind it. The goal is to knock, notice, listen, and respond. Want support applying this clinically? If you're an EMDR therapist, brain-based therapist, Brainspotting clinician, or trauma therapist who wants more flexibility and curiosity in your work, The Consultation Program is where we take these ideas into actual clinical consultation. Inside consultation, we can explore what happens when the protocol doesn't go according to plan, how to understand activation in real time, and how to work with the client's system without getting trapped by rigid expectations. 146: What If Your EMDR Resources Stop Working? [Beneath the Protocol Series]

What if the resources you installed in EMDR Phase 2 aren't supposed to last forever? In this episode of the Beneath the Protocol series, Kambria Evans explores why Phase 2 of EMDR isn't simply something you complete before moving into trauma processing. Introducing, The Zero Disturbance Phase 2 Refresh. As the nervous system processes and reorganizes, the system changes—and what a client needed access to at the beginning of therapy may not be what they need now. You'll learn: Why EMDR resources can lose their relevance over time How processing changes the architecture of the nervous system Why Phase 2 should be revisited throughout treatment The difference between calm and capacity How to recognize when a client's resources need a refresh Why clinicians should assess access and relevance, not just whether a resource still works How The Zero Disturbance Phase 2 Refresh supports a more dynamic approach to brain-based therapy At Zero Disturbance, we don't see Phase 2 as a box to check. We see it as an evolving system of access that changes as the client changes. Are you ready to think beyond the protocol and develop a more nuanced approach to EMDR and brain-based therapy? 145: EMDR & Peak Performance [Beneath the Protocol Series]

What if performance problems aren't actually skill problems? In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans explores how EMDR and other brain-based therapies can be used for performance enhancement, not just trauma processing. Kambria breaks down the difference between a true skill deficit, an access problem, and an integration or flexibility problem—and explains why people can know exactly what to do but lose access to their abilities under pressure. You'll learn: Why performance problems are often activation problems How state-dependent access affects performance How to identify the exact moment performance changes Why trauma isn't required for performance-focused EMDR How sensation, emotion, parts, memories, and imagery can become performance portals Why reducing disturbance is only one direction of brain-based therapy How to use EMDR to expand states like confidence, presence, curiosity, creativity, courage, and flow Why future rehearsal is an important part of performance enhancement Why peak performance is ultimately about nervous system flexibility, not staying calm Want to Go Deeper? 144: When Insight Isn’t Enough [Beneath The Protocol Series]

You can understand why you do something and still feel completely unable to change it. In this episode of Beneath the Protocol, Kambria Evans explores what happens when insight-based therapy reaches its natural limit—and why different mechanisms of change may be needed as therapy evolves. We explore: Why understanding a survival pattern doesn't necessarily update it The difference between insight and adaptive learning How EMDR and other brain-based therapies create change differently from talk therapy Why clients can process trauma memories and still feel stuck How protective parts influence the healing process Why psychedelic-assisted therapy can sometimes create opportunities for new learning How to recognize when a client may need a different mechanism of change Moving from following a protocol to following the adaptive system The goal isn't to find a “better” therapy. It's learning to recognize what mechanism of change the system needs next. 143: What If EMDR Isn't Just About Memories? [Beneath The Protocol Series]

What if EMDR processing isn't only about autobiographical memories? In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans explores how the nervous system communicates through more than memory—and why recognizing these different "languages" can transform how therapists approach EMDR and brain-based therapy. In this episode, we explore: Why memory is only one language of the nervous system How clients may communicate through body sensations, emotions, dreams, imagery, metaphors, and parts The difference between dissociative language and becoming dissociated Why therapists don't always need to redirect clients back to the original target How imagery and metaphor can reveal the organization of the nervous system Why literal doesn't automatically mean integrated, and symbolic doesn't automatically mean pathological How to recognize whether the system is becoming more integrated The Zero Disturbance Systems Method and the concept that "every portal is a language" The goal isn't to abandon the EMDR protocol. It's to develop the clinical flexibility to recognize what the nervous system is communicating in real time. For EMDR Therapists If you've ever wondered, "Should I follow this image?" "Is this dissociation?" "Do I redirect them back to the target?"—this episode is for you. Ready to deepen your clinical work? 142: Beyond the Target: What Is Your Nervous System Organized Around? [Beneath the Protocol Series]

In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans explores what happens when we look beyond the traditional EMDR target and begin thinking about nervous system reorganization. In brain-based therapy, we often focus on identifying the negative cognition, processing the traumatic memory, and installing an adaptive positive cognition. But what happens after restoration? What happens when a client is no longer primarily organized around survival? This episode explores a deeper question: What does your client's nervous system want to become organized around next? Kambria examines how EMDR, IFS, ART, attachment theory, polyvagal theory, predictive processing, and other brain-based therapy frameworks all point toward a nervous system designed to protect and preserve the person. But survival isn't necessarily the ultimate goal of a human life. Through the Zero Disturbance Systems Method, Kambria introduces a distinction between restoration cognitions and expansion organizing principles. Restoration might sound like: "I'm safe." "I have choices." "I'm enough." "I can protect myself." "I can handle this." These are incredibly important. But expansion asks a different question: How do I want to live? What do I want to organize my life around? What matters to me now? What becomes possible when survival is no longer running the show? The episode explores how therapy can move from simply reducing disturbance toward systems reorganization, intentional authorship, identity development, connection, curiosity, creativity, meaning, and purpose. For EMDR therapists and other brain-based clinicians, this offers a new way to think about treatment beyond simply asking whether a target has been successfully processed. In this episode, you'll explore: Why so many brain-based therapies begin with the premise of self-preservation How trauma can change the organizing question of the nervous system Why the memory may be a portal into a larger predictive network The limitations of viewing EMDR solely through negative and positive cognitions The difference between restoration and expansion How the nervous system can become organized around values rather than fear What happens after trauma symptoms begin to resolve How the Zero Disturbance Systems Method expands traditional case conceptualization Why the deepest question in therapy may ultimately be: "What do you want your life to be organized around?" 141: Did I choose the wrong EMDR target? [Beneath the Protocol Series]

One of the biggest questions therapists ask after EMDR basic training is: "Did I choose the wrong target?" In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans challenges one of the most deeply held assumptions in EMDR—that successful processing depends on finding the "correct" memory. Instead, she introduces a systems-based framework that shifts the focus from correctness to access. Drawing on EMDR, Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing, and the Zero Disturbance Systems Method, Kambria explains why a target can be historically accurate, clinically relevant, and still fail to produce meaningful processing. The reason? It doesn't create system access. If you've ever wondered why Phase 4 stalls, why clients stay cognitive, or why processing feels forced despite choosing the "right" target, this episode offers a completely different lens for understanding EMDR case conceptualization. In this episode you'll learn: Why there may not be a "wrong" target in EMDR The difference between an access-opening target and an access-blocked target Why therapist anxiety often begins in Phase 1—not Phase 4 How Brainspotting, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing all prioritize access over content The difference between a capacity problem and an entry-point problem Why more resourcing isn't always the answer How to know when it's time to change targets How the Zero Disturbance Systems Method transforms EMDR case conceptualization If you're a therapist working with complex trauma, developmental trauma, dissociation, or nervous system dysregulation, this episode will fundamentally change how you approach targeting and processing. Ready to Move Beyond Protocol? Inside The Consultation Program, you'll learn the Zero Disturbance Systems Method—a systems-based approach that helps therapists recognize activation, access, protection, and nervous system organization in real time. Instead of wondering whether you picked the "right" target, you'll learn how to recognize where the system is actually ready to enter. Applications are now open. We'd love to have you. 140: Can You Do EMDR on Yourself? [Beneath the Protocol Series]

Can you do EMDR on yourself? It's one of the most common questions therapists and clients ask—but the answer isn't simply yes or no. In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans explores a deeper question: What kind of healing actually requires another person? Instead of focusing only on EMDR techniques, this conversation explores the role of access, protective systems, predictive processing, IFS, and brain-based therapy in trauma healing. You'll discover why some memories remain inaccessible, why protectors aren't resistance, and why the therapeutic relationship may expand access rather than "do" the healing. Whether you're an EMDR therapist, Brainspotting clinician, ART provider, or someone curious about trauma recovery, this episode offers a fresh systems-based framework for understanding why some healing happens alone—and why some requires relationship. In this episode you'll learn: Why "Can I do EMDR on myself?" is actually the wrong question The difference between awareness and access Why protectors aren't resistance How IFS changes the conversation around trauma What predictive processing teaches us about healing Why psychedelic therapy highlights the importance of the therapeutic container Why protocols don't create healing—access does How therapists can recognize when a nervous system is opening or closing Why flexibility often matters more than perfect protocol adherence How the Zero Disturbance Systems Method expands beyond traditional EMDR thinking If you've ever wondered why therapy sometimes feels stuck—even when you're doing everything "right"—this episode will completely change the way you think about healing.
