Tackling Ageism: Strategies for Fighting Age Bias at Work

Workplace ageism is a pervasive issue in the U.S. According to an AARP survey from 2021, 78 percent of workers between the ages of 40 and 65 say they’ve seen or experienced age discrimination at work. So, what strategies can employers and employees use to combat ageism?
On today’s show, LinkedIn News Editor Andrew Seaman speaks with Ashton Applewhite, an anti-ageism advocate and the author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. They discuss what companies and hiring managers can do to fight age bias during the hiring process, and what employees can do to support older colleagues. Ashton also explains why deepening our understanding of ageism is so important, and how the same tools used to combat other forms of prejudice can be applied in the case of ageism.

Tackling Ageism: How to Get Hired in Mid-Life and Beyond

Tackling Ageism: How to Get Hired in Mid-Life and Beyond

The US workforce is getting older. Last year, almost 20% of Americans ages 65 and older were employed – that’s nearly double the rate it was in the 1980s. For some older workers, they want to keep working past retirement age; for others, it’s not a choice. So how should older people position themselves in the labor market to overcome age bias?
In the second installment of our ageism series, LinkedIn News Editor Andrew Seaman is talking to Janine Vanderburg, founder and former director of Changing the Narrative, a nationwide campaign and nonprofit dedicated to reframing the way we think, and talk, about age and aging. They dive into the do’s and don'ts for getting hired as an older worker.
Whether you're actively seeking employment or looking to maintain your current position, this episode offers practical advice and strategies for older workers to position themselves effectively in the job market and overcome age bias during the hiring process and in their day-to-day work environment.

This is a Great Resource

I recently decided to re-enter the workforce after a break. I should add that I’m over 60 but highly qualified in my field. I thought it would be a slam-dunk. Just looking for a part time position to put my knowledge and experience to good use. Well, it’s a lot more challenging than I expected. I recently found myself with interviews for a position I really wanted, but was out of practice as to how to approach it all. I did a search in Apple podcasts for “job interview” and came to find “Get Hired.” What a great resource for any job seeker. Not only did I find great insight into acing my job interviews, but every time I had a question or thought about something, I looked through the episodes and there was one about that very topic. I’m sorry to say that after two months, 5 interviews and reference checks, I was one of three, and they went with one of the other candidates who had more direct experience with the kind of work. I’m disappointed for sure, but I see there’s an episode about dealing with grief around work. I’ll listen to that next. I love Andrew’s bouncy, energetic voice who makes me feel like he’s cheering ME on every time I listen to him. Thanks Andrew. Your podcast has been a great help to me and I know I’ll have a better chance landing that job because of you.

Looking for Work w a Disability

I enjoyed this podcast bc it was in direct line with my own personal story. I learned a great deal from Mark Raymond Jr and plan to put some of his suggestions in place during my next interview. I hope to hear more podcasts from Mark in the future! I encourage all people with a TBI to listen to a podcast from Mark Raymond Jr.
