#78 - Our High Payoff Drills and Exercises

What if a quick drill could reduce your pain, increase your mobility, and let you perform at your highest potential?  In this episode, Alisha returns to the podcast and joins me as we speak with our producer, Tony, to talk about our high payoff drills and exercises and analyze the underlying neurology and strategies behind them.  We discuss:    What we mean by a drill that is "high payoff" How to find your high payoff drills and exercises Range of motion, pain, performance and coordination as assessments Vestibular system deficiencies and their effect on certain movement drills The table dilemma Opposing joint theory Localized drills vs targeting patterns and higher order systems PMRF and cerebellar patterns Order of operations when applying drills The unexpected connection between smell and hearing The power of positive association and neural chunking Neurological patterns born from trauma Diet and downstream effects on pain and mobility Outgrowing and moving on from high payoff drills High payoff drills for performance in strength and sport Cranial nerve activations One-sided joint mobilizations Anti-saccades and other vision exercises Band-assisted knee circles, tractioning, and tapping Humming and vagus nerve activation Stacking for more targeted results Pinhole glasses and inhibition techniques The most surprising high-payoff drills we've seen And more... #76 - How To Build A Resilient Nervous System

What if you could train your body and nervous system to be more resilient?  In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about building resilience.  I discuss how resilience and threat are deeply intertwined, why traditional conditioning approaches can sometimes backfire, and how a holistic approach allows us to take someone from feeling pain to moving well and building strength, endurance, and tolerance.  I also talk about the anatomy of the thalamus and its role in passing or inhibiting threat signals to the brain, history findings that could indicate issues with the thalamus, and why the thalamus may be a key factor in understanding and overcoming chronic pain.  I also share strategies to improve resilience through threat reduction, targeted exposure, and thalamic conditioning.  This episode touches on topics such as the threat bucket, threat inoculation, the thalamus, chronic pain, air hunger, ice baths, saunas, strength training, training specificity, plasticity, interoception, the frontal cortex, joint mobility, bone rhythms, obstacle courses, and more.   Thank you to my podcast idea man and coach, Tony Fowler (Instagram: @tone_reverie) for helping me put together this episode! #75 - How To Be A Good Client

What should you actually do once you've found a professional in applied neurology?  In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about what you can do as a client to take control of your own health and performance. I discuss common mistakes and misconceptions, what to share about your health and fitness history, why your mindset matters, the importance of doing your homework, how to find a good practitioner, the invisible effects of metabolic health, how much education you really need, and more.  I share stories of an athlete that couldn't fix his tight hamstring, a first session where a 45 minute history-taking led to a 5 minute breakthrough, and of how my own experience with mold toxicity has informed how I think about being in the client's shoes.  While this episode is geared towards those seeking or working with a practitioner to help with their pain, mobility, and fitness, there are also a ton of valuable takeaways for the professional on how to best serve your clients.  Thank you to my podcast idea man and coach, Tony Fowler (Instagram: @tone_reverie) for helping me put together this episode! #73 - Combating Clumsiness with Parietal Lobe Training

What if you have a loss of sensation somewhere in the body?  Or are known in your household as the clumsy one that bumps into things all the time?  In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the parietal lobe and how it relates to movement, sensory input, rehabilitation and spatial awareness. I discuss the importance of sensory processing, why sensory training sometimes goes nowhere, and why the parietal lobe may be the key to improving movement and sensation, and reducing pain.  I discuss the neuroanatomy of the parietal lobe, related higher order systems, and common history findings that indicate the parietal lobe.  I then tie it all together to come up with assessments, stimuli, drills and stacks that target the parietal lobe to improve sensation and movement, and decrease pain.  This episode touches on proprioception, concussions, spatial awareness, left-right discrimination, dyslexia, the 8 Levels model, the cerebellum, spinal injury, visual drills, changes in body weight, gait testing, dual-tasking, sensory stimulation, manual techniques, stacking, juggling, ground-based movement, and more.  Thank you to my podcast idea man and coach, Tony Fowler (Instagram: @tone_reverie) for helping me put together this episode! #72 - Spinal Mobility Matters

What if your back pain isn't an issue with the spine at all?  In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the spine and how spinal mobility relates to pain, movement, and neural processing.  I go over common history findings and assessments that indicate issues with the spine.  I also go over findings that look like they indicate the spine, but may actually be visceral referred pain from internal organs or processing issues in higher order systems. I address common misconceptions and poor practices regarding spinal health and the importance of addressing root causes.  Finally, I give the listeners ideas and resources on how to improve spinal mobility for a better neural network, less pain, and better movement.  This episode covers topics such as deep tendon reflexes, gait analysis, sensory testing, bilateral muscle weakness, gut health, breathing, the parietal lobe, posture, neck injuries, nerve glides, vestibular drills, steel clubs, and more. #71 - The Neurology of Posture

What if strength training isn't improving your posture?  In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the neurology of posture.  I discuss why posture is so commonly misunderstood, why higher order systems cannot be ignored with regard to posture, and how to assess postural problems from an applied neurology perspective.  I talk about the importance of vision, balance, and movement in defining posture, as well as address structural issues from birth or lifestyle, and in doing so I make the case that posture and higher order neurological systems are inherently connected.  With that knowledge, I then provide a framework for analyzing posture from a more holistic vantage point.  From gait assessments to vision drills and even understanding why a hearing deficit may be causing bad posture, this episode is everything you need to know and probably aren't hearing about with regard to posture.
