Why We Need to Find the ADHD Girls Earlier—and What Five Minutes Can Change

Today Jessica talks with Cynthia Hammer and Kristan Shimpi, two leading advocates working to make sure girls with ADHD are recognized, supported, and understood before years of shame and misunderstanding take hold. Cynthia is the founder of Find the ADHD Girls and Executive Director of the Inattentive ADHD Coalition. Diagnosed with ADHD at 49, she turned her own late discovery into a lifelong mission to help girls get identified early and receive the support they need. Kristan is trained through the Duke ADHD Program, holds a PhD in Special Education and Curriculum Instruction, and brings decades of experience in ADHD research, girls’ leadership, problem-solving, and volunteer development. Together, they explore what ADHD looked like in their own childhoods, why bright girls are so often missed, and how earlier recognition can help children develop self-understanding instead of internalizing criticism. They also share why advocacy does not require expertise or endless spare time: one email, conversation, or shared resource can make a meaningful difference. Learn more about the movement and become a volunteer advocate at FindTheADHDGirls.org/advocates. Parents and caregivers can explore the organization’s free checklist at FindTheADHDGirls.org/checklist-form. ADHD, Movement, and Finding Focus When Your To-Do List Feels Impossible

Today Jessica talks with Ashley Grant about movement, ADHD overwhelm, and why getting your body moving can change far more than your fitness level. Ashley shares how she went from a childhood full of dance, tae kwon do, and activity to nearly two decades of sedentary work—and how one decision to take movement seriously changed the way she feels, works, and sees herself. What began as a personal commitment became More Movement, Please, a refreshingly real fitness podcast for people who want encouragement without perfectionism. This conversation also explores the practical challenges of ADHD: overloaded to-do lists, time blindness, task paralysis, doomscrolling, guilt, and the pressure to get eight hours of work done in one magical hour. Ashley and Jessica talk about why movement can help clear the mental clutter, support focus, and make it easier to begin again. Late-Diagnosed ADHD, Perimenopause, and Reclaiming Your Power in Midlife

Today Jessica talks with Lisa Barwise about late-diagnosed ADHD, midlife transformation, and what happens when perimenopause, burnout, and self-understanding collide. Lisa shares how years of being the “healthiest lazy person you know” eventually gave way to a diagnosis that helped explain so much of her life, and why self-compassion mattered more than trying to fix herself. This conversation also explores the links between ADHD and perimenopause, the meaning of armor weight, the power of grace, and how women can move from survival mode into a new season of purpose and choice. Late-Diagnosed ADHD in High-Achieving Women: Masking, Grief, and Reclaiming Your Brain

What if the reason life feels harder than it “should” isn’t a personal failure—but a different way your brain works? In this episode, Jessica sits down with licensed mental health counselor Amelia Howard to explore the deeply layered experience of late-identified ADHD in high-achieving women. Together, they unpack the hidden cost of competence, the emotional toll of masking, and the grief that can surface when you finally understand your brain. Amelia shares her personal journey of recognizing ADHD in her 40s—after years of success, leadership, and “holding it all together”—and how that realization reshaped both her life and her clinical work. This conversation goes beyond surface-level ADHD traits and dives into the emotional realities: exhaustion that rest can’t fix, the pressure to appear “fine,” and the invisible labor of holding everything together. They also explore the turning point—from asking “What’s wrong with me?” to “What do I need?”—and how self-compassion, support, and small strategic changes can create a more sustainable way of living and working. If you’ve ever felt capable on the outside but overwhelmed on the inside, this episode offers clarity, validation, and a new way forward. ADHD, Motherhood & the Myth of “Normal”: Redefining Disability, Rest, and Self-Advocacy with Gabriella Mooney

What if the problem isn’t you… it’s the world you’ve been trying to fit into? In this conversation, Gabriella Mooney shares what happened when her son’s ADHD diagnosis cracked something open in her—and how it led her to finally recognize her own brain. We go beyond the usual ADHD talking points and into something deeper: the quiet accommodations she was already making, the exhaustion of motherhood layered with a constantly-on brain, and the complicated relationship so many women have with rest. Gabby brings a perspective I don’t hear often—and deeply respect. She talks about ADHD as a disability, not as a limitation, but as a reflection of a world that isn’t built for different kinds of brains. Whether or not you use that language, her framing will challenge you in the best way. We also talk about: The “reverse masking” happening at home vs. schoolWhy rest feels so loaded (and why five minutes can trigger guilt)The cycle of burnout, recovery, and learning to say noHow community becomes a nervous system regulator—not just supportThe long, ongoing process of self-acceptance This is not a neat, tied-up conversation. It’s honest, nuanced, and real—just like the experience of living with ADHD. If you’ve ever felt like you should be able to handle more… or wondered why everything feels harder than it “should”… this one will land. Is ADHD Really Neurodivergent? Rethinking Neurodiversity and “Normal” Brains

Is ADHD really “neurodivergent” — and if so, what exactly is it diverging from? In this short solo episode of ADHD Alchemy, Jessica questions the idea that there is one “normal” kind of brain and everything else is a deviation from it. What if neurodiversity isn’t an exception to the rule, but the rule itself? Jessica digs into the meaning of normal, the biological variation found throughout the living world, and the possibility that different kinds of brains are not errors or anomalies, but natural variations that have persisted for a reason. She explores questions like: Why do we assume there is one standard human brain? Is ADHD actually outside the norm, or is it one expression of the incredible variation in human brains? Is neurodivergence better understood as part of neurodiversity, rather than a departure from “normal”? And what happens when we stop treating average as synonymous with normal? This is a short, thought-provoking episode about ADHD, neurodiversity, neurodivergence, brain differences, and what it really means to be “normal.” The invitation is simple: What if ADHD isn’t a divergence from “normal” at all? What if a wide variation in human brains IS actually normal — and ADHD is simply one expression of that diversity? What do you think? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The ADHD Alchemy Podcast is where bright, sensitive women finally stop masking and start thriving—with clarity, confidence, and shameless potential. How Movement Rewires the ADHD Brain: Exercise, Emotional Regulation, and Self-Trust

What if movement isn’t just “good for you”—but one of the most powerful tools for regulating an ADHD brain? In this episode, I sit down with Emmy Rousseau, transformational speaker, fitness instructor, and fellow Intensati leader, to explore the profound connection between movement and the mind. We talk about Emmy’s late ADHD realization, the hidden shame of being a high-achieving woman who looked “fine” on the outside while struggling internally, and why movement has become one of her most reliable tools for focus, emotional regulation, and presence. We also dig into the science-backed "magic" of dance, cardio, affirmations, and mindfulness—and why combining them creates something even more powerful than the sum of its parts. If you’ve ever noticed your brain gets quieter when your body gets moving, this conversation will make you feel deeply seen. Inside this episode, we cover: Why so many high-achieving women with ADHD go undiagnosed for yearsThe shame that builds when others see competence but you feel chaosHow movement supports dopamine, focus, and neuroplasticityWhy dance may be uniquely powerful for ADHD brainsWhat makes Intensati different from traditional workoutsHow body sensations can help you catch emotional dysregulation earlierWhy your intuition may know what works before science confirms it Learn more about Emmy and her work at Trinity Transformations and connect with her on Instagram and Facebook Your Lab Kit: Do a 5-minute mood-movement reset.Practice the body check-in during emotional moments.Pair movement with identity-based affirmation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The ADHD Alchemy Podcast is where bright, sensitive women finally stop masking and start thriving—with clarity, confidence, and shameless potential. Late-Diagnosed ADHD, Nervous System Awareness, and Learning to Pause

Today Jessica talks with Nicole Hope, author of "Calm Is Power," about ADHD, stress, and the surprising power of learning to listen to the body. Nicole shares how years of anxiety, overwork, and physical burnout eventually led her to a deeper understanding of nervous system regulation, behavior, and what true calm can actually look like. This conversation also explores the connection between body awareness and decision-making, the overlap between ADHD and stress, and why self-knowledge can create more choice, clarity, and ease in everyday life. Inside this episode: How Nicole moved from overwhelm into a deeper understanding of her bodyWhy stress often shows up physically before it becomes obvious mentallyWhat “behavior intelligence” means and why it mattersHow body awareness can improve relationships and daily decision-makingWhy the morning is the best time to check in with your nervous systemHow ADHD brains benefit from simple, accessible practices instead of pressureWhy pause, not perfection, is the foundation of real change This conversation is a powerful reminder that calm isn’t about eliminating stress or getting everything “right”—it’s about learning to notice what’s happening in your body and creating a little more space to choose what comes next. Nicole’s insights offer a practical, compassionate way to better understand ourselves, especially for ADHD brains that can spend so much time pushing through.
