Ep. 34 I'm Exhausted from Burnout | The Cycle of Capability for Midlife Women

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever felt exhausted in a way that a good night's sleep or a weekend off just doesn't touch? That's the kind of burnout I'm talking about in this episode — not the kind rest fixes, the kind that shows up even after you've done everything right. I'm sharing a real two weeks from my own life — my husband off work, both of us somehow getting busier instead of slowing down — and the moment it finally hit me that something had to give. If you've heard my earlier episode responding to Jenna Kutcher's essay on the hustle pattern, this one picks up right where that left off. Knowing the pattern exists didn't stop me from ending up burnt out anyway. In this episode, I name something I don't think gets said enough about burnout: the more capable you are, the less anyone actually checks on you. From the outside it looks handled, so people stop offering help. Instead they call you superwoman — and that praise quietly substitutes for real support. Underneath that is an even harder layer: guilt about ease. Even when help is available, there's an unspoken rule that you have to earn the right to rest through suffering, not simply by wanting it. I walk through exactly how that shows up, and why it keeps so many women waiting for collapse before they'll actually ask for anything. I also break down the real physiology behind chronic stress — the actual cascade from your hypothalamus to your pituitary to your adrenal glands, why the body's natural "stand down" signal stops working under constant pressure, and the part most people miss entirely: your nervous system treats isolation itself as a threat, which means real connection isn't just nice to have, it's one of the only things that can actually turn the stress response off. What you'll learn about burnout in this episode: Why capability can isolate you, and how "superwoman" becomes a substitute for real helpThe guilt mechanism that makes rest feel like something you have to earn through sufferingThe actual HPA axis cascade — what your hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands are doing, and why the shut-off switch stops workingWhy isolation itself keeps your body in a stress response, and why being seen matters biologically, not just emotionallyA simple way to check your actual capacity — and why saying the number out loud matters more than just noticing itThis is exactly the kind of thing we work through inside my monthly membership, the Intuitive Circle — not adding more self-care to an already full plate, but practicing letting yourself be seen needing something, until it stops feeling like proof you've failed. The Circle's on a summer pause right now, but the waitlist is open at lesleyturner.ca/theintuitivecircle for first access when it reopens in September. Ep. 33 One Glass of Whiskey Taught Me This About Somatic Healing and Intuition

Send us Fan Mail Ever notice how one drink can leave you feeling completely disconnected from yourself the next day — flat, insecure, or unable to name why? That's emotional numbing, and I learned firsthand that it's not just a mood. It's your nervous system's built-in "quiet down" switch getting flipped without your permission. In this episode, I'm sharing two personal stories — one with a glass of whiskey and my dad, one with a glass of wine on my anniversary trip — that revealed something I didn't expect: alcohol didn't just relax me. It cut me off from my intuition, the exact somatic read I rely on with clients, with my son, and with myself. I break down the biology behind it — what GABA actually does in the brain, why cortisol spikes the next morning and mimics anxiety, and why serotonin drops can shorten your fuse for a full day after just one drink. But I also go further than the biology, naming something I've never said out loud on this podcast before: the felt sense of disconnection from my own intuition when a substance interfered with my signal. This is what emotional numbing actually looks like from the inside — not a dramatic blackout, but a turning-down of something I didn't even know was on. And alcohol is just the most obvious mute button. Scrolling, overworking, overthinking, staying too busy — they all do the same thing: let whatever's running underneath keep running without you ever having to feel it. If you're a midlife woman who's done everything right and still feels stuck, disconnected, or unsure why your emotional regulation seems to disappear overnight after something as small as one glass of wine, this episode names what's actually happening in your body — and why I think noticing it is the whole practice. What you'll learn about emotional numbing in this episode: 1. Why one drink shut off my intuition and somatic awareness for 24 hours 2. The real biology behind alcohol, GABA, cortisol, and serotonin — and what it does to nervous system regulation 3. Why I'm noticing "mommy wine culture" losing its grip on more women in my circles every month 4. How I recognize my own mute buttons — the everyday ways I numb out beyond alcohol entirely 5. Why I think noticing what goes quiet is more powerful than forcing a tidy answer This is exactly the kind of pattern work I do with women inside my Intuitive Circle — not "should you drink or not," but what happens in your body when something interferes with your signal, and what's actually running underneath. The Circle is on a summer pause right now, and I'll be reopening doors in September. Get on the waitlist at lesleyturner.ca/theintuitivecircle for first access. Ep. 32 Why Can't I Just Say No (Breaking the People Pleasing Pattern)

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever said yes to something and felt your whole body go "ugh" the second the words left your mouth? That's people-pleasing, and if you've spent your life calling yourself "a people pleaser," I want to push back on that a little. It's not who you are — it's a pattern in your body, and patterns can shift. In this episode, I'm telling the story of two piano teachers, a pencil taped under my hand for "proper technique," and years of lessons I kept taking long after I'd earned the credit I actually needed — because even once the choice was genuinely mine, I still needed an excuse to take it. That excuse wasn't really for me. It was for anyone who might have asked why I stopped. I break down what people-pleasing actually is underneath the fear everyone already talks about — fear of conflict, of disappointing someone, of being too much or not enough. But I go a layer deeper than that: people-pleasing is a self-protection strategy, not selflessness. It's not really about the other person at all. It's about whether you're safe, and whether you're still seen as good, even in the moments you don't feel good, or easy, or generous. Underneath that self-protection is something I think gets missed even more: shame. Not "she'll be disappointed in me tonight," but "if she's disappointed in me, that means something is actually wrong with me." That's the belief that turns one uncomfortable yes into an entire way of moving through the world. I also talk about where this actually starts — not just in your own childhood, but sometimes generations before you. If your mother, or her mother, never got to say no without real consequences, that gets passed down. This isn't just my story. Some version of it is probably every woman's story. What you'll learn about people-pleasing in this episode: Why people-pleasing is a fear response, not a personality traitThe self-protection strategy hiding underneath "being nice"Why shame — not just fear — is what makes the pattern impossible to stop at just one yesHow people-pleasing can pass down through generations of women in a familyA concrete way to notice the moment right before you say yes when you mean noThis is exactly the kind of pattern I work through with women inside my Intuitive Circle — pulling apart, live, where a yes actually came from in your body before you agreed to it. The Circle's on a summer pause right now, but the waitlist is open at lesleyturner.ca/theintuitivecircle for first access when it reopens in September. Ep. 31 Self Abandonment As A Midlife Woman (And Why You Keep Playing Small)

Send us Fan Mail Self abandonment is one of the most common patterns running underneath the surface for midlife women — and most of them don't even know it has a name. If you've ever downplayed a win the second someone noticed it, apologized for taking up space, or told yourself to just get over a feeling that was actually real — that's not modesty. That's not personality. That's self abandonment. And it's been running a lot longer than you realize. In this episode of The Emotional Truth, we're naming what self abandonment actually is, where it gets installed in the body, and what it feels like when you finally catch yourself shrinking instead of expanding. I also share why I renamed this show from The Intuitive Drop to The Emotional Truth — and honestly, the real reason wasn't just strategy. It was that I launched something real and still found a way to hold back how loudly I said it. Same pattern I see in clients who are quietly succeeding in their careers but won't let anyone know. Same pattern that's been running since I was a kid learning it was safer to stay in the background of my own life. This is body based healing in action — not as a concept, but as something you can feel in real time when you notice yourself getting small. What we cover in this episode: Why self abandonment gets installed early — and it's not just one reason. The nervous system regulation piece that most people miss when they're trying to understand why they keep playing small. What it actually feels like in your body when you're shrinking instead of expanding. A real client story about a woman who spent her whole life succeeding quietly so she doesn't make anyone uncomfortable. Why people pleasing and self abandonment are not the same thing — and why that distinction matters for midlife women doing this work. You don't have to keep running a program that was written for a version of you that doesn't exist anymore. Ep. 30 The Emotional Patterns That Don't Allow High Achieving Women To Slow Down | Jenna Kutcher Got It Half Right

Send us Fan Mail You hit the goal. You waited for the feeling. Something else showed up instead — and it wasn't gratitude. It was a quiet question: did I do this wrong? Jenna Kutcher wrote something recently that hit a nerve for thousands of women. Her Substack essay The Honey Isn't The Point named the pivot so many high-achieving women are making right now — away from the hustle, toward the garden, the slower life, the thing that actually feels like theirs. And she got it beautifully right. What she didn't get to — because it's not her lens — is why we couldn't slow down in the first place. The body-based, somatic healing piece. The pattern underneath the drive that no amount of awareness alone can touch. In this episode we go there. Why the hustle was never really about ambition. Where the pattern actually came from. And why you can pivot to the slower life and still find yourself optimizing it — hustling in a different costume — if you haven't looked at what's underneath. This is somatic coaching meets pattern work meets the conversation Jenna started and didn't finish. 🔗 Read Jenna's essay 🔗 Workshop replay — If I Rest I'll Lose Everything ($37) 🔗 The Intuitive Circle Book 1:1 www.lesleyturner.ca/services Subscribe to the pod: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/730IxK6Le9bwgAwKQBbrfM?si=a649923b6d4f4a4b Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-emotional-truth-nervous-system-regulation-somatic/id1896858957

Ep. 28 Pinterest Strategy, Pattern Work, and Learning to Trust Your Body with Elaine Timms

Send us Fan Mail Elaine Timms built a Pinterest strategy business that grew to 100K sessions/month, sold a blog for five figures, and has spent almost eight years helping entrepreneurs get their content working long after they hit publish. She's also someone who spent years in fight-or-flight without knowing it — outsmarting everything, including herself. In this conversation, Elaine and I talk about what actually shifted when she stopped following everyone else's rules — in her business, her body, and her creative life. We get into the energy over strategy philosophy she's built her work around (and where that phrase actually came from — credit to Chelsea Schreiner), why Pinterest might be the most nervous-system-friendly platform you're not using, and the fiction writing project that's been coming to her through her dreams. This one's for the business owner who's doing everything right and still wondering why something feels off.
