Other Mommy Director Rob Savage Interview: Jessica Chastain is "mind-blowingly terrifying"

Director Rob Savage joins Bloody Good Horror to discuss Other Mommy, his terrifying adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel hitting theaters October 9th. Savage talks about translating the book’s cosmic horror to the screen, creating scares in broad daylight, and finding new ways to keep audiences from trusting the visual language of horror. He also digs into the film’s complicated ideas about motherhood, family, and the different versions of ourselves that exist beneath the surface. Plus, the star power and sheer terror that Jessica Chastain brings to her dual role, why they ultimately moved away from using prosthetics to distinguish her characters, and how she was able to create some of the film’s most disturbing moments using nothing but her face and body. As Savage puts it, she is the film’s “secret weapon.” Other Mommy arrives October 9. 🩸https://x.com/bghorror 🩸https://www.instagram.com/bloodygoodhorror/ 🩸https://substack.com/@bloodygoodhorror 🩸https://www.facebook.com/bloodygoodhorror 🩸https://www.tiktok.com/@bgoodhorror 🩸https://www.threads.com/@bloodygoodhorror 00:00 Lovecraftian Horror02:12 Horror in the Light04:55 Corrupting Safe Spaces07:06 The Two Faces of Mommy09:37 Feminist Horror10:49 Teaching Audiences Not to Trust Horror13:05 The Table Scare15:36 Jessica Chastain's Performance18:02 Jessica Without CGI19:45 Jessica's Performance Is the Secret Weapon Learn more about your ad choices. Scream Turns 30: How It Conquered Pop Culture by Breaking the rules

Scream turns 30, and Bloody Good Horror takes a deep dive into the movie that reshaped not only the horror genre, but wider pop culture. We look at the lightning in a bottle created by the joining of fright master Wes Craven with the voice of 90s youth, Kevin Williamson, how it brilliantly skewers the "rules" of the horror film while flipping them on their head, and how the cinematography, production design and score take the whole endeavor way over the top. Plus, a look at the 90s cultural context that Scream stepped into, why it was the Obsession of its day, and how the sequels have largely failed to capture the magic that made the original so special. After the break, we've got a packed round of horror news, including our conversation with the newly announced SAW director, Zach Cregger launching strays at Shudder, Resident Evil RT reviews going crazy and more. 👻Support Bloody Good Horror, gain live stream access, join our Slack and get the entire back catalog by visiting us at: https://www.patreon.com/bloodygoodhorror BGH on social media (Now on Substack!) 🩸https://x.com/bghorror 🩸https://www.instagram.com/bloodygoodhorror/ 🩸https://substack.com/@bloodygoodhorror 🩸https://www.facebook.com/bloodygoodhorror 🩸https://www.tiktok.com/@bgoodhorror 🩸https://www.threads.com/@bloodygoodhorror 00:25 Intro 05:44 Word of the Day 07:06 Review 1:08:01 Break 1:11:06 Horror News 1:20:02 Fan Mail Learn more about your ad choices. Mike P. Nelson on Beware Boiúna, Filming in the Amazon, and Finding His Voice as a Filmmaker | Interview

Director Mike P. Nelson joins us to talk about Beware Boiúna, his new theatrical horror film set deep in the Amazon rainforest. Mike discusses the real-world environmental conflict that inspired the film, the folklore behind Boiúna, and the decision to create a fictional indigenous tribe. He also talks about balancing mythology, science, and mystery, and why leaving certain questions unanswered can make a monster more frightening. We go behind the scenes of one of the film's biggest creative choices: actually shooting in the Amazon. Mike talks about the heat, bugs, flash floods, disappearing sets, and unpredictable environment that became an unexpected part of the filmmaking process. He also explains how putting the actors directly into that environment shaped their performances. Finally, Mike reflects on his evolution as a filmmaker and the personal themes that continue to find their way into his movies. He talks about letting go of the idea that he needed to have a carefully defined filmography, bringing his own voice to unexpected projects, and finding the freedom to simply follow the work. Since this interview was recorded, Mike has been announced as the director of the next SAW film. Beware Boiúna opens in theaters October 2nd, 2026.
