Episode 3: “Testimony” | Philippians 1:18b-26 1. Welcome + Warm-Up In this episode, Ryan and Cole discuss the importance of context when studying Scripture and explore Paul's testimony in Philippians 1:18b-26. Paul’s words reveal a life transformed by Christ, marked by deep love for God's people and an unwavering passion for God's glory. Warm-Up Questions When someone asks, “How are you doing?” what is your typical response? Can you think of a recent example of how God has been teaching or growing you through circumstances? What comes to mind when you hear the word “testimony”?2. Work-Out Philippians 1:18b-26 | ESV Passage Link https://www.esv.org/Philippians+1/ Bible Study Nugget: Context is Key — Scripture is best understood within its original context. Paul is writing from prison and sharing his personal testimony. This passage contains no commands. Instead, it reveals Paul's heart, mindset, and confidence in Christ.Paul's Confidence in Deliverance Paul trusts God because of: The prayers of God's people. The help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.Paul's hope is not wishful thinking but confident trust in God's promises and provision. “For Me to Live Is Christ” Paul's testimony centers on two realities: An intense love for Jesus Christ.Intentional labor for the people of Jesus Christ.Because Christ transformed Paul's life, he can genuinely say: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)Paul understands that: Living means serving Christ and others.Dying means being with Christ, which is far better. The Purpose of Paul's Life Paul desires to remain and continue serving because: He loves God's people. He wants to see their progress and joy in the faith. He wants others to glory in Christ Jesus.Discussion Questions What stands out most to you about Paul's testimony? Why do you think Paul viewed both life and death as opportunities to glorify Christ? How does Paul's love for others challenge the way you view your own life and priorities?Who are the people God has called you to encourage and serve? What would it look like for you to say, “For me to live is Christ”?Training Room Method Read Philippians 1:18b-26Observe What does Paul repeatedly say about himself and his desires? What gives Paul confidence in the middle of difficult circumstances? What motivates Paul to continue living and serving?Reflect Is your identity rooted primarily in Christ or something else? What are you most passionate about right now?How has God been growing you recently?Respond Ask God to deepen your love for Christ.Pray for a greater love for His people.Look for an opportunity this week to share your testimony with someone.3. Wrap Up What Does God Want Us to... Know (with our minds) True Christian hope is grounded in God's promises, not wishful thinking.Christ uses the prayers of His people and the power of His Spirit to accomplish His purposes.A transformed life is centered on Jesus and His glory.Feel (with our hearts) Gratitude for Christ's saving and sustaining grace.Greater love for fellow believers.Renewed passion for knowing and following Jesus.Do (with our hands) Pray faithfully for others.Serve God's people with humility and love.Share your testimony of God's ongoing work in your life.Pursue Christ daily through His Word, prayer, worship, and Christian community.Resources Cross Training Publishing: Philippians Resource for Coaches https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-coach?_pos=3&_sid=808124a77&_ss=r Cross Training Publishing: Philippians Resource for Athletes https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-athlete?_pos=2&_sid=808124a77&_ss=r Testimony Bible Study Worksheet https://irp.cdn-website.com/0c5f6cee/files/uploaded/The_Training_Room_Method+-+Ep3.pdf Key Takeaway Paul's testimony is simple yet profound: because Christ transformed his life, he loved Jesus above all else and gladly spent his life serving God's people. Warm-Up Questions: What brings you the greatest joy? When have you felt God's pleasure while using your gifts for His glory?Have you ever seen God use a difficult circumstance for a greater purpose? 2. Work-Out Philippians 1:12-18 | ESV Passage Link: https://www.esv.org/Philippians+1/ Bible Study Nugget: Authorial Intent The question is not, "What does this passage mean to me?"The question is, "What did Paul intend to communicate to the Philippians?"Before applying Scripture to our lives, we must understand its original meaning.Key Truth Paul celebrates as he suffers because the gospel is advancing through the public proclamation of Jesus Christ. Main Discussion Points: Paul's imprisonment was not a setback. It was God's means of advancing the gospel. The gospel had spread throughout the imperial guard because of Paul's chains.Paul's faithfulness encouraged other believers to speak God's Word with greater confidence and boldness.Repeated themes in the passage include: Advancing the gospelSpeaking the WordDefending the gospelProclaiming ChristPaul rejoices because Christ is being proclaimed, even when some people preach from imperfect motives. There is no wasted suffering in the life of a believer. God can use hardship to advance the gospel in ways we may never expect.Gospel light often shines brightest when the fire of affliction is hottest.Key Takeaway God can use difficult circumstances to place us exactly where He wants us so that others can hear about Jesus. 3. Wrap Up What does God want us to... Know (with our minds) God is sovereign over our circumstances.Difficulty does not stop God's mission.God often uses suffering as a means to advance the gospel.Feel (with our hearts) Joy when Christ is proclaimed.Confidence that God is working even in hardship.Hope that our suffering is never wasted in God's hands.Do (with our hands) Live with a Spirit-led resolve to be a gospel ambassador.Speak about Christ with confidence and boldness.Use both victories and hardships as opportunities to point people to Jesus.Follow the example of faithful believers who consistently advance the gospel.Reflection Questions How might God be using a current challenge in your life to advance the gospel?Who are two people you admire for their boldness in proclaiming Christ? What is one way you can be more intentional about sharing the hope of Jesus this week?Resources Cross Training Publishing: Philippians Resource for Coaches https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-coachCross Training Publishing: Philippians Resource for Athletes https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-athleteAdvancement Worksheet: https://irp.cdn-website.com/0c5f6cee/files/uploaded/The_Training_Room_Method+-+Ep2.pdfBottom Line: When Christ is proclaimed and the gospel advances, we have every reason to rejoice.

Episode 1 | Teamwork **Philippians 1:1-11** Read the full passage: https://www.esv.org/Philippians+1/ Welcome + Warm Up Opening Thought The episode begins with a story about the deep bonds formed among soldiers who fought together during World War II. Those relationships lasted a lifetime because they were united by a common mission and shared sacrifice. In the same way, Paul writes to the church in Philippi with deep affection because they have been partners with him in the Gospel for many years. Their relationship demonstrates the kind of unity that believers share through Jesus Christ. Big Idea The unity we experience on teams, in families, and through shared experiences should point us toward the greater unity we have as brothers and sisters in Christ. Workout  **Philippians 1:1-11**"Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Thanksgiving and Prayer 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." What We Observed 1. Paul Leads as a Servant - "Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus..." (v.1) - Paul introduces himself not by his authority, but by his humility. - Christian leaders are called to serve rather than seek status. - Gospel partnership begins with a servant's heart. 2. Christ Is the Center Throughout the passage, Paul continually points back to Jesus Christ: - Christ Jesus (v.1) - Lord Jesus Christ (v.2) - Day of Jesus Christ (v.6) - Affection of Christ Jesus (v.8) **Jesus is the source of our unity, hope, mission, and growth.** 3. Gospel Partnership Creates Community "...because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now." (v.5) The church at Philippi was made up of very different people, yet they were united by the gospel. The gospel is the good news that: - Jesus lived the life we could not live. - Jesus died the death we deserved. - Jesus rose from the grave. - Through faith in Him we receive forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life. 4. Paul Deeply Loves the Church "I hold you in my heart..." (v.7) "How I yearn for you all..." (v.8) Paul demonstrates genuine Christian affection and gratitude for fellow believers. 5. Paul Prays for Their Spiritual Growth Paul's prayer is that they would: - Abound more and more in love - Grow in knowledge and discernment - Approve what is excellent - Be pure and blameless - Be filled with the fruit of righteousness - Live for the glory and praise of God Main Truth Paul prays that the Philippians would abound in the fullness of God's love and fruitfulness as faithful partners in the gospel. --- Wrap Up Head (Know) - The gospel creates a family of believers united in Christ. - God finishes the work He starts in His people (Phil. 1:6). - Jesus is the foundation and focus of Christian unity. Heart (Feel) - Gratitude for those who have invested spiritually in your life. - Love and appreciation for your church family. - Joy in being part of God's mission with other believers. Hands (Do) - Pray regularly for fellow believers. - Pursue the spiritual good of others. - Grow in love, wisdom, and discernment. - Be an active partner in the gospel where God has placed you. Key Takeaway **Prayer is the language of dependence.** Paul's love for the Philippians overflowed into prayer. As we grow in gratitude for those God has placed in our lives, we should be driven to pray for them and depend on God to do what only He can do. --- Additional Resources: For Coaches **The Christ-Pursuing Coach** https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-coach?_pos=3&_sid=808124a77&_ss=r For Athletes **The Christ-Pursuing Athlete** https://crosstrainingpublishing.com/products/the-christ-pursuing-athlete?_pos=2&_sid=808124a77&_ss=r
