    The Shortwave Report October 30, 2026

    This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, France 24, Radio Havana Cuba, and NHK World Radio Japan. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr261030.mp3 (29:00) From GERMANY- Last weekend saw more massive demonstrations across France. Some 70,000 police were on the streets which limited the property damage and looting seen the weekend before. An interview with Donnatella della Porta, a leading Italian sociologist who is a professor in Florence. With youth led protests spreading around the world Donnatella analyzes whether this is a movement converging within each country and globally. She believes that the different social justice issues will join, especially opposed to the growing militarism escalating in many governments. From FRANCE- The French government made promises to answer the youth who were demanding more focus and resources be given to education- many of the reforms announced are less than honest change. As I am producing this show on Thursday morning there is no clear outcome in the Israeli election- the candidates are not very different. Lula de Silva won the Brazilian election, but his right-wing opponent disputes the results and escaped legal problems by fleeing to Florida. From CUBA- On Wednesday the annual UN vote calling for an end to the US blockade was overwhelming in favor of Cuba, despite significant pressure from the US government. Cuba congratulated Lula on his victory in the Brazilian election, despite American social media attempting to give the election to Bolsonaro. Pro Publica reported that defense contractor gave a bribe to late US senator Lindsey Graham and others for government contracts. The UN says the world lost its chance to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, but that careful attention to prevent it from getting much worse. From JAPAN- The European Parliament awarded the ICC with its annual prize for defending human rights. The UN Human Rights Council released a new report on Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip. The Venezuelan opposition leader returned to her country, hoping to bring on an election. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have sent senior officials to Iran foe security talks.     This week's show features stories from France 24, NHK World Radio Japan, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr261023.mp3 (29:00) From FRANCE- The student led protests in France expanded with yellow vests, unions, and the black bloc. Chaos reigned as many fought with the increasingly violent police. Some defaced revered cultural sites. Then looting began and people who had nothing to do with the demonstrations broke into stores and grabbed whatever was available. The government arrested thousands and put curfews in place. France became more politically divided and the far right took it as a victory, calling for law and order. Some accused the far left party called Unbowed of being behind the violence. We will hear press reviews from France and then international sources. There were more riots in Portugal over the economy, in Italy things turned violent and looting spread especially in Milan. Protesters fought with police and military in Albania. The new UK PM announced a controversial new drilling license in the North Sea despite the worsening climate situation. From JAPAN- For the first time China surpassed Japan in global automobile sales, mostly due to innovative electrical models. Thailand is seeing a shift in taxis turning to electric models. Marco Rubio was in India and said the Quad members, that is India, Australia, Japan, and the US will have a meeting next month in the Philippines. 8 US states are suing ChatGPT developer Open AI because of the risk it has for suicide and self-harm among youth. The UN World Food Program has had to cut food assistance in Gaza due to funding shortages. Last weekend Ukraine launched a major drone attack on St Petersburg and Leningrad, creating fires at oil facilities, residential buildings, and a data center. A group of European diplomats were attacked by settlers in the illegally occupied West Bank , following the nearly fatal attack on a 64 year old Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine. From CUBA- In Brazil there are protests against Meta accusing the social media giant of electoral interference ahead of this coming weekends presidential election. Trump declared his complete support for Netanyahu in the Israeli PM election in a week. ALJ found Israeli spyware in its journalists phones and computers. The Pentagon will delay until after the US midterm elections releasing its investigation into the attack on an Iranian school that murdered 120 children the first day of the war on Iran. There has been a lot of focus on the French student protests which are continuing- maybe because it reminds us of the French protests in 1968 when civil unrest emerged around the planet. We will begin with some massive protests in India, where the Modi government removed millions of people from the voting rolls, allegedly targeting Muslims. The police and military detained and injured thousands of civilians, including many politicians, and blocked social media. Thousands took to the streets in Portugal to rally against soaring rents and house prices, with dozens injured by a violent police crackdown as I put this show together on Thursday. In Colombia thousands of riot police and military attacked crowds protesting a new anti-terror bill and the new right-wing President Espriella. In Brazil students are protesting against Flavio Bolsonaro who received the most votes in the first round of presidential elections last week. France 24 correspondent Jan Onoszko reports from Rio- including protester comments and speculation on why many youth are choosing to follow the right-wing politician From JAPAN- NHK spent quite a bit of time talking about and with South African born Navi Pillay who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Pillay defended Nelson Mandela, was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, a judge at the ICC and the ICJ. Germany has authorized a social media ban for children under the age of 13. Houthi rebels in Yemen has been engaging in missile strikes with Saudi Arabia. From CUBA- Israeli PM Netanyahu wants investigations into the Israeli creators of and participants in the award winning documentary film NAZA. The Pentagon killed another 4 people on a speedboat in the Caribbean allegedly carrying drugs. Der Spiegel published testimonies from 10 Israeli soldiers describing how troops murdered Palestinians and recorded them as being terrorists.     This week's show features stories from NHK World Radio Japan, France 24, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr261009.mp3 (29:00) From JAPAN- A robot arm will begin surveying the 880 tons of nuclear fuel debris in the reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant which melted down in 2011- they are hoping to begin cleaning the waste in 2037. The Trump administration is looking to expand nuclear power in the US, including restarting the plant at 3-mile island, site of the worst nuclear accident in US history. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez has called for a snap election on November 29th as a response to unrest over skyrocketing housing prices. There will be a runoff vote in Brazil on October 25th between Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro. From FRANCE- More on the Brazilian election where Lula and others are complaining about US interference in the electoral process. Then a series of press reviews on the massive student protests in France this week. An estimated 266,000 high school students marched in the streets and were met with increasing clashes with police. The main objective was to update dilapidated school buildings especially in poorer areas, more staff, and to limit class sizes to 36. By Thursday parents and union members had joined the demonstrations to protect the students- In Spain and Belgium students have also begun protests. An editorial on where the students rage comes from. The question of whether Netanyahu and the Israeli state were told of the Hamas plans to attack 10 days in advance and did nothing to prepare for the horrible massacre on October 7th. From CUBA- The US Coast Guard intercepted an oil tanker in the Caribbean trying to bring fuel to Cuba. The lack of fuel continues to plague all aspects of life in Cuba, including its ability to broadcast their news. The Mexican ruling Morena party stated it will maintain support for the Cuban people in the face of the energy blockade imposed by the US- Mexican President Sheinbaum spoke out at the UN General Assembly expressing solidarity with Cuba. President Sheinbaum also warned about the presence of right-wing groups within the US administration which intend to change the government of Mexico. Police in the UK arrested 6 people in the area of a Royal Air Force Base that had been used by the US military to bomb Iran, implying that they were terrorists, then let them out on bail. Trump says that Canada will come and apologize and remove their retaliatory tariffs. An interview with Lawrence Herman, an international trade lawyer from Canada. He says Canada will not come back and say they are sorry. Canada sends about 70% of its exports to the US but many of the materials and components in those products are from US sources- thus an economic slowdown in the states. Canada has been cementing new trade relations with the European Union. Lawrence says Canada will not become a member of the EU as was recently speculated. He says trade with the US will not end, but there will be many difficulties until Trump leaves office. From JAPAN- Tokyo experienced a record breaking 31 consecutive days of rain. Japan continues to run nuclear power plants but has no place to permanently store the waste. Trump says that South Korea is investing in 8 new nuclear power plants in the US as well as an LPG pipeline in Alaska- South Korea denies agreeing to the pipeline. At the UN General Assembly North Korea insisted on its right to remain a nuclear armed state. UN Secretary General Guterres is concerned over the lack of progress in nuclear disarmament. Also at the UN the Nepalese PM blamed the devastating floods on global warming which his country is not responsible for. From CUBA- Last weekend at the UN, the Cuban FM denounced multi-dimension hostilities from the US. On Tuesday the US issued new regulations and sanctions to further strangle the nation and people of Cuba. China reaffirmed its strong support for Cuba. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband addressed critics of the Labour policy on the plight of Palestinians and announced sanctions on Israeli settlements- Ed however failed to support those charged with terrorism for carrying signs expressing support for Palestine Action.
