    457. The psychology of 'false' memories

We treat our memories like a reliable recording of the past. We remember what happened, how we felt, where we were, and what was said. But what if our account is more like a subjective recollection of events? In this episode, we explore the concept of false memories – how they form, why this matters in our everyday lives, and their more serious potential impacts. We explore:•        The cognitive mechanisms behind false memories•        The misinformation effect and the car crash study•        Why our memories are open to imagination, repetition and social influence•        Potential consequences of false memories in news reporting and eyewitness testimony•        The importance of ethical therapeutic practices and memory Watch on Netflix: HERE Follow Jemma on Instagram: @jemmasbeg Follow the podcast on Instagram: @thatpsychologypodcast Subscribe on Substack: @thepsychologyofyour20s For business: psychologyofyour20s@gmail.com  Our favourite sources:https://innocenceproject.org/dna-exonerations-in-the-united-states/ https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/memory-mind-and-media/article/fake-memories-a-metaanalysis-on-the-effect-of-fake-news-on-the-creation-of-false-memories-and-false-beliefs/B6A66A305AFD6724E1C1C56A68BB5CF2 https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0021-9010.83.3.360 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022537174800113?via%3Dihub https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/BF03196174 The Psychology of your 20s is not a substitute for professional mental health help. • Why You Can't "Push Through" ADHD Overwhelm (and What to Do Instead)

Why You Can't "Push Through" ADHD Overwhelm (and What to Do Instead)

If overwhelm makes you want to shut down, hide, procrastinate—or somehow try to do everything at once—this episode is for you. Kristen breaks down why ADHD overwhelm isn’t simply a productivity problem and why “trying harder” or finally getting caught up usually doesn’t create the relief we’re looking for. You’ll learn how ADHD impacts your capacity, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and nervous system—and why all of that can make everyday life feel like 10 things are screaming at you at the same volume. Kristen also introduces the first step of her STOP Method: See What’s Happening. Instead of immediately trying to fix your overwhelm, you’ll learn how to recognize what’s happening without piling on shame, judgment, or blame. See it. Don’t solve it. Want to go deeper? Kristen is teaching the full STOP Method throughout September inside FOCUSED, her monthly ADHD coaching membership. Learn more and join at ihaveadhd.com/focused. Child Therapists: Why Modern Parenting Is Backfiring

Parents have never had more information about how to raise emotionally healthy children. We know more about anxiety, trauma, validation and how profoundly childhood can shape the person someone becomes. And yet, something strange is happening at the same time. Young people are increasingly afraid of ordinary milestones. An increasing number don't move out of their childhood home until after age 30. Therapists are seeing children describe normal conflict as “toxic,” ordinary worry as anxiety, and difficult emotions as emergencies. And parents, terrified of getting it wrong, are stepping in earlier and more often to make sure everything turns out okay. Sissy Goff and David Thomas have spent more than three decades counseling children, teenagers, and families. Their concern is not that parents care too much. It is that some of our best instincts may be producing an unintended consequence: children who feel deeply understood, but increasingly unsure they can handle life without us. To understand how we got here, we follow five clues: • Why 49% of people under 30 still live with their parents • How parents begin managing outcomes as early as age three • What a child who kicked a flight attendant reveals about emotional validation without boundaries • Why one mother asked Alexa how to stop her daughter’s panic attack • And the surprising gap between how many people experience trauma and how many develop PTSD Together, those clues lead to a much bigger question: How do you protect a child without protecting them from the experiences that teach them they can handle life?
