HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN • Young Sherlock premiers on Prime from March 4! #661

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN! What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. Many have attempted it... What will this iteration look like? Enjoy the episode, and catch the show too of course! RUTGER BREGMAN (Utopia For Realists / Humankind / Moral Ambition) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Rutger Bregman, originally episode 190 from 2018-02-21. Original writeup below: An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of b******t’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. Enlighten yourself and enjoy! ADEEL AKHTAR • "dig where you stand" (Mass / Four Lions / Down Cemetary Road) #669

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by acting great ADEEL AKHTAR! There's no doubt that this is a very special episode, as you have rightfully come to expect from Distraction Pieces. But there's a feeling of almost meditation on this one, a sense of two people building a very detailed structure of conversation and being in total flow state with it, while all the time the door is open for everyone listening (as opposed to two people having a locked-off personal catch up, you know?). Adeel has clearly done a lot of thinking and indeed meditating on this craft of acting, and so much of it is present here as he and Pip get into all aspects of the game, including the process itself and the myriad facets within, the art and mechanics of theatre acting versus screen acting and the subtle alterations that are necessary, and the idea of requiring permission to pivot or try something new when you might already be exactly where you need to be. As Adell quotes, "dig where you stand". What's also perfect is that he joined Pip for this chat while he was on break from rehearsing for 'Mass', which is also talked about in here. Pure craft on display. Oh and also please check the Music Boutique link below - more details in the ep. Enjoy! Benicio Del Toro: Puerto Rico to Hollywood and dreaming in English (The Phoenician Scheme / The Usual Suspects / Sicario) #620

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by one of the greats... it's BENICIO DEL TORO! "I'm a FAN!" proclaims Benicio at various points in this lovely catch up with Pip, and it's so heartening to hear. Not that anyone ever expected him to be anything less than awesome, but this is actually quite a rare appearance from someone evidently beloved by those involved in cinema and those who view the films alike. While a quick Google search will bring up a bunch of films he's been in and you wlll love, you could just do an old fashioned analogue mind search and come up with something equally quick, as everyone will have one. BDT is in town and on the promo trail for the new Wes Anderson joint 'The Phoenician Scheme' in which he plays a major role, but during this episode you'll also hear about that road up to it including everything along the way. How he fit so much into such a short time here we'll never know, but rest assured you'll have a fine time enjoying and discovering his past lives along the actorial path. A real treat, you already KNOW this is gonna be an awesome episode. Dissecting Disfluency (w/ Cherry Burns) #641

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip discusses the broad topic of disfluency with journalist CHERRY BURNS! Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. So please, listen and enjoy, it's a really fun episode and definitely one we can all gain something from, and ultimately celebrate. Shouts to Cherry too for being an awesome guest interviewer! Today, we catch up with Boots Riley, originally episode 243 from 2018-12-05. Original writeup below: “…as I went on I realised the main thing that I needed to give people was passion…” Pip’s been lining this one up for a GOOD long while, before the hype was bubbling in the UK for Boot’s debut film as director, and the wonderful news is that it will be in the UK very soon! I for one am sick of reading tweets about how good it is from US people. So it’s great news that us UK folk get a piece… This is a perfect if slightly condensed connection with Pip and Boots, as they get into his desire to be Prince early on, theatre, film school, wanting to sound like Ice Cube, the mainstream-ness of documentaries, having faith in a great cast, his diverse cinematic influences, importance of wardrobe and “beautiful clutter”. Oh, and that whole Spike Lee thing too... Wonderful - enjoy, investigate the film ‘SORRY TO BOTHER YOU’ and go through the back catalogue of THE COUP at your nearest convenience!!! Today, we catch up with Karl Pilkington, originally episode 306 from 2020-01-08. Original writeup below: While some see Karl as the grumpy one of the original podcast trio consisting of him, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, as you will hear in this podcast right here - it wasn’t necessarily grumpiness. Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off. Brilliant. Enjoy! Today, we catch up with Jamie Demetriou, originally episode 212 from 2018-06-20. Original writeup below: You’re going to be seeing a LOT more of Jamie over the next month or two as he’s about to unveil his new series ‘Stath Lets Flats’, which is part of Channel 4’s ‘Comedy Blaps’ vehicle - in the meantime, enjoy this proper get together with Pip and Jamie, as the two cover a ton of ground in the cosy but apparently humid Acast studios to discuss the use of the not often utilised Greek accent in comedy, working on a small scale as a jumping board for larger scale work, the fact that he’s “Always done idiots”, working with and promoting his comedian sister, the heightened but committed character, reactions to comedy within the actual scenes, improv and the importance of casting, the insanity and craziness of the Edinburgh Fringe, the idea of ‘anti-comedy’, and it’s important to point out that while this episode features reference to David Earl throughout, the podcast is not sponsored nor overseen by him. But check him out whenever you can, of course. He’s awesome. So’s Jamie. Enjoy! emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Armando Iannucci, originally episode 174 from 2017-10-24. Original writeup below: Responsible for an insane amount of some of the greatest UK comedy since the 90's, including the writing and production of 'The Day Today' which spawned Alan Partridge and the Partridge multiverse, 'The Thick Of It', 'Time Trumpet', and US based 'Veep', Armando is clearly a titan of the game. With his new production 'The Death Of Stalin' (in cinemas NOW!), he's been grinding it out on the media promo run, but is sharp as a katana as he sits down with Pip for a nice long chat covering all the necessary bases and loads more that you'd hope to hear about, including said promo run grind and the madness of it all, especially seeing your own film countless times, being mindful of not using the victims of the subject of his film for comedy and finding that material from many various other sources, social media and how the echo chamber is reinforced and debate is fading, how the film draws parallels with today's US presidency even though it was filmed months before Trump's election win, and how to successfully wrangle an all star cast in order to promote efficiency on set. Tons more obviously but yeah, super entertaining and a must for Armando fans and those who appreciate the craft of writing and production. Get into it!
