HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN • Young Sherlock premiers on Prime from March 4! #661

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN! What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. Many have attempted it... What will this iteration look like? Enjoy the episode, and catch the show too of course! JOE CORNISH (The Kid Who Would Be King / Attack The Block / Adam & Joe) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Joe Cornish, originally episode 253 from 2019-02-15. Original writeup below: Consider this the counterpart to the much earlier Adam Buxton episode, if you will, what with Joe being Adam long term co-conspirator and collaborator! Between them they very much had a hand in those early days of podcasting, which was something of a direct offshoot of radio but with a very creative and premeditated approach, not to mention their amazing TV work… With both of them going their separate ways and moving onto a ton of incredible work between them, it’s been hugely inspiring to see the individual sides of the two, and Joe breaks down his recent work and creative projects including of course, ‘Attack The Block’ and brand new film ‘The Kid Who Would Be King’ (showing by the time you read this)! Hear Joe go in on everything else besides too, including film reactions from kids, violence in modern kids films, how he valued seeing himself in kids films (as a young’un), the “Supermarket Sweep of hell” of an approaching film deadline and its many intangible obstacles, how it’s tough to truly enjoy your own film creations as you know too much about them and his own Super8 films back in the day, made with pals Buxton and Louis Theroux! A lot packed into a shorter episode - you’ll dig it for certain! JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN! A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. A valuable, intimate but ultimately incredibly powerful conversation right here folks. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature JESS IG PIP AT PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA! Mark Steel: making gold with tragedy and comedy (The Leopard In My House / The Mark Steel Lectures / Vive La Revolution) #635

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the legendary comic MARK STEEL! It's entirely likely you'll have been listening to and watching the work of Mark for decades now - he's been hard at work for a minute, and the fanbase is strong indeed. As you'll hear, Pip's been on board for years, starting with the Mark Steel Lectures. Here we have a really lovely catchup with these two as Mark leads the way through his past and present, and as with so much in life, it's a potent mix of all angles. Presently we find Mark having recently battled throat cancer, which as you can imagine features as a big topic here - something which no doubt Mark is still processing and recovering from. On that note, it could be advised that Mark doesn't hold back on some details (neither should he), so just mentioning that for those who might appreciate the alert. But it's also pretty incredible that not only do we get to hear about what happened in the past tense, we get to hear it through Mark himself, as even talking as a way of communicating was a difficult thing to weave around. All that said - he is a comic, so there's a huge amount of fun and laughter and the whole episode is a real joy (and TONS of random facts. Catch him on the road, the schedule is packed... emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Mae Martin, originally episode 314 from 2020-02-26. Original writeup below: A tremendous meetup of Pip and Mae, and dare I say a long overdue one at that… You’ll get to hear all about Mae in the greater scale and sense, from back in the day to… now… in the day…? Yeah that sounds fine to me… But yeah, everything from then to now, including what they are doing THIS VERY MOMENT, and by that of course I mean starring in the simultaneously hilariously funny and brutally honest Feel Good, which looks set to blow up worldwide. So expect to hear it all from how to view the series (best served binged), the weirdness of editing trailers, getting the correct audience, Canada (Oh Canada), the process of getting a set together, Mae the character and Mae the person, sex scenes and writing a proudly LGBT show, humanising addition, the casting process, digging deep into personal history and the transition from Canada to London but SO MUCH MORE of course. emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Vicky McClure, originally episode 187 from 2018-01-31. Original writeup below: Surely you will have seen Vicky's acting greatness on the big and small screen, having a HUGE part to play in the filmography of the legend Shane Meadows in films such as A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England and the series of which the film spawned (as ‘Lol’), but if not you will most definitely be catching up after this chat with Pip, as she goes all the way into the archives, back to her days in the acting workshop where she honed her craft and improvisational skills (which would be vital in her later roles), Nottingham days, her very realistic and sobering view on her own acting profession which is very refreshing to hear, a TON of fascinating behind the scenes science on the Meadows method and the deep connection between director, cast, and overall end product, and her own collaboration with fashion label Finery. An all round podcast of pure perfection, so set aside some time and enjoy every moment. You shall. JESSIE ROUX • the power of representation & hitting the floor running post-Traitors (Traitors Series 4) #659

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the Traitors-starring legend JESSIE ROUX! An episode for the books right here! Those of you who love and appreciate the how Traitors will have surely also come to love and appreciate the recent breakout superstar Jessie. Jessie's awesome from the start of course but it's a weirdly rare thing to see and hear folks with a stammer out there in the mainstream media (our very own Pip notwithstanding), so when she comes along and blesses the world with such an aura and pure vibes it is a treat to be celebrated. Naturally - as comes up in the conversation - Jessie is not her stammer, in so much as it is not her identity. So enjoy this brilliant chat which covers so much in her life, upbringing, present day and so much in her personal experience which leads to the person you're listening to in this episode. Pure greatness. * SPOILERS LATE IN THE EP FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN SERIES 4 OF TRAITORS AND INTENDS TO! Benicio Del Toro: Puerto Rico to Hollywood and dreaming in English (The Phoenician Scheme / The Usual Suspects / Sicario) #620

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by one of the greats... it's BENICIO DEL TORO! "I'm a FAN!" proclaims Benicio at various points in this lovely catch up with Pip, and it's so heartening to hear. Not that anyone ever expected him to be anything less than awesome, but this is actually quite a rare appearance from someone evidently beloved by those involved in cinema and those who view the films alike. While a quick Google search will bring up a bunch of films he's been in and you wlll love, you could just do an old fashioned analogue mind search and come up with something equally quick, as everyone will have one. BDT is in town and on the promo trail for the new Wes Anderson joint 'The Phoenician Scheme' in which he plays a major role, but during this episode you'll also hear about that road up to it including everything along the way. How he fit so much into such a short time here we'll never know, but rest assured you'll have a fine time enjoying and discovering his past lives along the actorial path. A real treat, you already KNOW this is gonna be an awesome episode. Domhnall Gleeson: the acting continuum and spectrum just about covered in about an hour (Echo Valley / Ex Machina / Frank) #623

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by a long awaited guest and general acting legend, DOMHNALL GLEESON! Business first - if Percy Pigs want to come through and sponsor the podcast we're all on board (you're welcome Percy for the free plug btw 🐽). More importantly though of course, this is a fabulous episode which covers so much of the acting science that it's one that aspiring actors (or indeed working ones) could do well to take some notes from. In a freeflowing and easy chat, so much is covered and expanded upon, with new ideas and perspectives coming left right and centre, which all makes for some really engaging listening. Domhnall is primarily around at this moment in time to check in about the thrilling new 'Echo Valley', which leads onto various subjects including character study, unconditional love, support and enabling and accents. So much other ground is covered besides, including older film roles and upcoming ones, Werner Herzog, Ireland on the whole, nepotism, directors and writers and one of Pip's unrequited beefs. Oh, Distraction Pieces takes it there. Trust. Enjoy!
