HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN • Young Sherlock premiers on Prime from March 4! #661

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN! What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. Many have attempted it... What will this iteration look like? Enjoy the episode, and catch the show too of course! DJ SHADOW (Endtroducing / Quannum Projects) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with DJ Shadow, originally episode 298 from 2019-11-13. Original episode intro: "Guess who’s coming… IT’S… Guess who’s coming… IT’S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he’ll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it’s DJ SHADOW!" (* now that is a solid intro). Original writeup below: “…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…” A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age’ and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie’, conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! Such a good one. You’ll love it. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature DJ SHADOW online DJ SHADOW on INSTAGRAM OUR PATHETIC AGE ROSIE PHILL MOST CHILL - 'On Tempo Jack' (for reference!) emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Rahul Kholi, originally episode 355 from 2020-11-25. Original writeup below: An ALMOST in person DPP right here - well, Pip and the guest being in the same city, in a country far far away from their respective homesteads anyway - please enjoy a brilliantly upfront and honest chat with actor RAHUL KOHLI! I say upfront and honest - basically it’s one where sentiments aren’t hinted at, and feelings and thoughts are addressed in a mature and adult manner. He and Pip are currently in Vancouver, Canada, in the midst of filming in some very airtight pandemic conditions. You can hear all about that, which of course branches out into how life is in Canada, viewing the pandemic from a different country, the attitudes in the US, race and the media, privilege, social media tone deafness, becoming a Twitter celeb (not as glamorous as it sounds), what re-Trump-ing says about you, Mike Bithell and the amazing North Star Rising project he and Pip guested on, auditions, gaming voiceovers, acting, and the many intricate nuances of invoking Bollywood. It’s a packed one and it’s great. Get yerself in a listening situation. MARK JENKIN • a Cornish Affirmative from an audience of one (Bait / Enys Men / Rose Of Nevada) #675

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Cornwall's finest and UK film making royalty MARK JENKIN! A total gem of an episode here, whether you are a heavyweight devotee of Mark's film output or if this is the first time you're hearing about him. Mark's got many years in the game, and in an era where almost every single thing feels digital, his approach to film making is almost as aesthetically radical as it comes - using all analogue gear, and a truly unique attitude to post-sync sound too. This chat gets into many eras and processes, including the origins of Bait (2019) which stem back to decades ago, how to tour a film, making films for an audience of self, representing the working class in an honourable way, Cornwall stereotypes, falling in love with the film making process again via Super8 cameras, the music making process and how said sync work happens. Genuine good stuff for the films heads (and, as said, those not familiar - everyone will get something from this). Oh and just TRY not to incorporate the Cornish Affirmative into you daily parlance. You can't eat the view! –––––––––– ROSE OF NEVADA is still showing in UK cinemas and on Monday 13 July will screen at BFI IMAX, Britain’s biggest screen, with a live score performed by The Cornish Sound Unit (Mark Jenkin and Dion Star).   On 24 August it will be released on BFI Blu-ray/DVD and streaming exclusively on BFI Player. A BFI Blu-ray box set, THE CORNISH TRILOGY, containing BAIT, ENYS MEN and ROSE OF NEVADA is released the same day. –––––––––– PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature ROSE OF NEVADA ENYS MEN BAIT ROSE OF NEVADA SOUNDTRACK (and more • Invada Records) PIP x TOMO CAMPBELL @ HARRY STYLES MELTDOWN • SOUTHBANK CENTRE SPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTORE PIP TWITCH • (music stuff) PIP INSTAGRAM PIP TWITTER PIP PATREON PIP IMDB Hosted on Acast. Craig Mazin: delivering script notes and dropping science on the small and big screen (Chernobyl / The Last Of Us / Scriptnotes Podcast) #642

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the incredible screenwriter, showrunner, producer and dungeon master CRAIG MAZIN! Craig is a self proclaimed Pipster! Which bodes incredibly well as an opening gambit right there... This is such a treat of an episode which anyone possessing an interest in the making of television (and cinema in general) will get an immense kick out of. Chances are you will know Craig from his recent work on The Last Of Us, some of you may go back to the Chernobyl miniseries times, and some even further to the Hangover movies, but none of these can be considered pigeonholes. There is so much in the craft of these projects, and as viewers of them will know - the humanity is undeniable, and that's something that just cannot be faked or phoned-in. So what you hear here is a conversation with someone who makes incredible shows and movies, informed by a love of the work, the people involved, and life in general. To hear that he was once blamed by a critic for being "singularly responsible for degrading Western Civilization" will make absolutely negative sense by the time you've heard this. Oh and stay for the shared Barney story too, cos that rules. Basically - too much to sum up here - just listen and enjoy, it's a classic DPP right here! IAIN LEE • a life working in and coping with the media (Impostor Syndrome / The Living Room Tour / 11 O' Clock Show) #674

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by host, presenter and returning guest IAIN LEE! Iain is a welcome, familiar face to a lot of us - someone who's been involved with some really great things, and it's a great chance to catch up and check in on where life's been leading him for the past handful of years (or more fairly, where's he's been directing his life. Truly it hasn't been an easy journey, with various dependancies and relapses on the table, but the 2026 Iain is congniscant of how these situations came into play and is able to trace the path. But there have been some awesome stops on the journey too, in finding love via a long term working relationship, and navigating an incredibly heavy and tense live radio situation resulting in a life-saving triangulation of listeners. Included in the chat of course are re-evaluations of the past and past works, I'm A Celeb, humiliation vs humility, figuring out a live show in your living room, and confronting the end of level conscience boss that is the fact that one might be as good as one hoped to be. So a lot going on, clearly...! Get listening. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature IAIN LEE (all links here!) James Acaster • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #512

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by show favourite, renowned comic and now grand producer JAMES ACASTER! Some might consider this a kind of trojan horse episode, in that it's not wall to wall "Let's talk about comedy and Taskmaster" - no, this time, Pip catches up with James about his new role as producer and orchestrator behind the new sprawling music project 'Temps'! The project itself is a truly adventurous step to bring together a ton of different worlds, but revolving around a main concept of everyone being a unique and necessary presence on the album. Highly regarded rappers and musicians coming together in ways that even us fans would be refreshingly surprised by. It features so prominently in this episode because don't forget - Pip comes from this world, but has also been a fan and friend of James' for many years now, so if you're feeling wary of hearing the comic you like talking about an album of music, leave that wariness at the door and put your faith in the podcast. It's excellent stuff, and there's some acting and TV bits at the end too of cours! Have fun! Dissecting Disfluency (w/ Cherry Burns) #641

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip discusses the broad topic of disfluency with journalist CHERRY BURNS! Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. So please, listen and enjoy, it's a really fun episode and definitely one we can all gain something from, and ultimately celebrate. Shouts to Cherry too for being an awesome guest interviewer! Vicky McClure (This Is England / Insomnia / Line Of Duty) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Vicky McClure, originally episode 187 from 2018-01-31. Original writeup below: Surely you will have seen Vicky's acting greatness on the big and small screen, having a HUGE part to play in the filmography of the legend Shane Meadows in films such as A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England and the series of which the film spawned (as ‘Lol’), but if not you will most definitely be catching up after this chat with Pip, as she goes all the way into the archives, back to her days in the acting workshop where she honed her craft and improvisational skills (which would be vital in her later roles), Nottingham days, her very realistic and sobering view on her own acting profession which is very refreshing to hear, a TON of fascinating behind the scenes science on the Meadows method and the deep connection between director, cast, and overall end product, and her own collaboration with fashion label Finery. An all round podcast of pure perfection, so set aside some time and enjoy every moment. You shall.
