DJ SHADOW (Endtroducing / Quannum Projects) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with DJ Shadow, originally episode 298 from 2019-11-13. Original episode intro: "Guess who’s coming… IT’S… Guess who’s coming… IT’S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he’ll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it’s DJ SHADOW!" (* now that is a solid intro). Original writeup below: “…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…” A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age’ and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie’, conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! Such a good one. You’ll love it. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature DJ SHADOW online DJ SHADOW on INSTAGRAM OUR PATHETIC AGE ROSIE PHILL MOST CHILL - 'On Tempo Jack' (for reference!) HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN • Young Sherlock premiers on Prime from March 4! #661

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN! What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. Many have attempted it... What will this iteration look like? Enjoy the episode, and catch the show too of course! AJA MONET • the surrealist blues poet defines the colour of rain ('The Color Of Rain' • 22 May on Drink Sum Wtr) #673

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the incredible musician and poet AJA MONET! To use a couple of words to sum up the essence of someone is a strange thing indeed, and this subject comes up in this chat too. The idea of indentity versus what one strives for. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. You'll definitely get a huge amount from the chat if you yourself are involved in words, but if you're in the least bit creative and find that side of your life as crucial as air and water, you'll get so much from the chat. Peep the new album 'The Color Of Rain' at your nearest opportunity in the links below! PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature NEW ALBUM HERE! JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN! A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. A valuable, intimate but ultimately incredibly powerful conversation right here folks. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature JESS IG PIP AT PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA! ADEEL AKHTAR • "dig where you stand" (Mass / Four Lions / Down Cemetary Road) #669

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by acting great ADEEL AKHTAR! There's no doubt that this is a very special episode, as you have rightfully come to expect from Distraction Pieces. But there's a feeling of almost meditation on this one, a sense of two people building a very detailed structure of conversation and being in total flow state with it, while all the time the door is open for everyone listening (as opposed to two people having a locked-off personal catch up, you know?). Adeel has clearly done a lot of thinking and indeed meditating on this craft of acting, and so much of it is present here as he and Pip get into all aspects of the game, including the process itself and the myriad facets within, the art and mechanics of theatre acting versus screen acting and the subtle alterations that are necessary, and the idea of requiring permission to pivot or try something new when you might already be exactly where you need to be. As Adell quotes, "dig where you stand". What's also perfect is that he joined Pip for this chat while he was on break from rehearsing for 'Mass', which is also talked about in here. Pure craft on display. Oh and also please check the Music Boutique link below - more details in the ep. Enjoy! MyAnna Buring • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #356

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Cinematic perfection is upon us once more, as Pip finally aligns schedules with the incredible and inspiring actor MYANNA BURING! It’s another great one folks, but I mean when has the Distraction Pieces Podcast ever been less than? That was rhetorical. But seriously… Anyway - here’s a beautiful chance to enjoy a wonderful chat across the internet lines with MyAnna, who you will know from one of the most intense films in movie history The Descent, or equally intense movie Kill List, or maybe from the marginally less intense (depending on your age perhaps) Twilight saga. At any rate, if you are yet to make her acquaintance, prepare to make a new pal right here through a packed chat, containing everything including making the decision to pare down over lockdown, how groundbreaking The Descent was when looking in retrospect, help along the way (this podcast has spiritual guidance from Michael Smiley and Stephen Graham of course), stories being the backbone of society, on-camera process, the scale of Twilight, traveling a ton as a kid and her triangle of the Middle East, Sweden and the UK, hard bread and The Witcher! Finally though, here are your three commandments: 1. Know your lines; 2. Turn up on time and 3. Don’t be a dick. Easy! ENJOY! Benicio Del Toro: Puerto Rico to Hollywood and dreaming in English (The Phoenician Scheme / The Usual Suspects / Sicario) #620

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by one of the greats... it's BENICIO DEL TORO! "I'm a FAN!" proclaims Benicio at various points in this lovely catch up with Pip, and it's so heartening to hear. Not that anyone ever expected him to be anything less than awesome, but this is actually quite a rare appearance from someone evidently beloved by those involved in cinema and those who view the films alike. While a quick Google search will bring up a bunch of films he's been in and you wlll love, you could just do an old fashioned analogue mind search and come up with something equally quick, as everyone will have one. BDT is in town and on the promo trail for the new Wes Anderson joint 'The Phoenician Scheme' in which he plays a major role, but during this episode you'll also hear about that road up to it including everything along the way. How he fit so much into such a short time here we'll never know, but rest assured you'll have a fine time enjoying and discovering his past lives along the actorial path. A real treat, you already KNOW this is gonna be an awesome episode. BOOTS RILEY (Sorry To Bother You / I Love Boosters / rap legends The Coup) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Boots Riley, originally episode 243 from 2018-12-05. Original writeup below: “…as I went on I realised the main thing that I needed to give people was passion…” Pip’s been lining this one up for a GOOD long while, before the hype was bubbling in the UK for Boot’s debut film as director, and the wonderful news is that it will be in the UK very soon! I for one am sick of reading tweets about how good it is from US people. So it’s great news that us UK folk get a piece… This is a perfect if slightly condensed connection with Pip and Boots, as they get into his desire to be Prince early on, theatre, film school, wanting to sound like Ice Cube, the mainstream-ness of documentaries, having faith in a great cast, his diverse cinematic influences, importance of wardrobe and “beautiful clutter”. Oh, and that whole Spike Lee thing too... Wonderful - enjoy, investigate the film ‘SORRY TO BOTHER YOU’ and go through the back catalogue of THE COUP at your nearest convenience!!! Dissecting Disfluency (w/ Cherry Burns) #641

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip discusses the broad topic of disfluency with journalist CHERRY BURNS! Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. So please, listen and enjoy, it's a really fun episode and definitely one we can all gain something from, and ultimately celebrate. Shouts to Cherry too for being an awesome guest interviewer!
