A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. It's not a stream of "Do you remember that time..." either, it goes way beyond that but expect some expert tangent taking though! So much life has happened since they got together to make their first releases, and since locking in on their individual paths, there have been huge departures from as well as continuations into what came before. It's lovely that all is amicable and supportive and while, as said in the episode title to quote Uncle LL Cool J, it is not a comeback (they been here for years), it is a reunion of sorts and a truly delightful one at that. From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. Infinite is proudly out there as a queer artist as they bloody well should be, and dropping fierce dancefloor boulders so far from those discordant RZA Stax soul loops of the 90's. Kicking things off in this chat with a hint of self-proclaimed nerves, these soon melt as the two go in on all kinds of conversational gold, including said Wu connections of course, London as 2nd home, stylist and model friend groups, finding their voice and going in on it, mutual pal Uglyworldwide, mutual pal Richard Russell (XL Recordings), the fusion of ballroom / vogueing / house music, covid era shelter experiences, RZA coming through when others didn't, reclaiming slurs, alternative perspectives of family songs of the past, the process of penning a song about a parent in a very tough moment, and ohhh so much more. BDT is in town and on the promo trail for the new Wes Anderson joint 'The Phoenician Scheme' in which he plays a major role, but during this episode you'll also hear about that road up to it including everything along the way. An in person episode for this follow up appearance, as the first time round was a Zoom-er in the heat of the lockdown times. So much has changed, for the band, for Joe himself, and the world on the whole. The last 5 years or so has been a cyclone of all sorts, and living through it while keeping a cool and level head is an insurmountable goal. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. A wide ranging chat but with an anchor of sorts, which addresses many heavy hitting subjects including class, poverty, politics, socials, reading, mental health, touring, being in a band in general and of course, tinned fish.
