Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace.     Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week we have a rare throwback recording to 2011 (pre-Distraction Pieces Podcast) with Pip, Kae Tempest, Musa Okwonga and Polarbear! The Mount Rushmore of spoken word right here folks, captured in a recording Pip uncovered while late-night trawling through the vaults by candlelight. This was originally recorded on camera but there was also a mic in the middle of the room - though as you will hear, it's a bit of a recording sandwich with the slightly more decent recording forming the bread and the slightly more raw camera audio forming the filling. Follow? Nice. It's a really cool chat, incredibly freeform and without defined topics and certainly not recorded with the shape and craft you might expect of late-era Distraction Pieces. But think of it as the 'Distraction Pieces Basement Tapes' - a lively chat of varying audio quality which functions nicely as a time capsule. It's also uncanny hearing about predictions for the following decade - eerie how much has been manifested since... The audio has been cleaned up a touch but sometimes with this kind of sound, things can get worse the more you try and scoop out of it, so just allow your ears to get familiar with it and you'll be grand. We are still in lockdown (lockdown has been lifted), and while we’re all going in to work (no going into work) and staying alert (SO much more alert than usual), Pip decided to round up a willing crew for some further drunk antics by way of the second ISOLATION DRUNKCAST! This one right here is the Back To The Future / Godfather / Karate Kid of podcasts. A three parter of crazy huge proportions, featuring not only Pip and the usual Hardcore Listing crew Stu and Chris, but also the truly great comedians / Off Menu duo of JAMES ACASTER and ED GAMBLE! A heavy affair combining all manner of drink combos, raised voices and flaring tempers all conducted over zoom through five mini computer screens. It actually didn’t stray too far outside the realms of decency, this one, and while it’s absolutely not radio friendly, you’ll most certainly enjoy this one like you surely did the previous Isolation Drunkcast! This is of course not down the awesome guests representing FullFact, but more down to how drastically the media and basic human landscape has changed since the episode was broadcast 11 years ago. We've seen how much can change in a week - so with our perspective over a decade later, it's like stepping back into a very bizarre alternative timeline. What's weird is that the phrase "fake news" was a mere glint in some shady folks eyes, and also that this chat happened 5 years before a pandemic, which was where misinformation truly had its time in the sun. Let alone artificial intelligence. This is some novel-worthy stuff right here. Anyway - without getting too caught up in all of the chaos, FullFact is a VERY important organisation who specialise in neutralising dis/mis-information and set out to fully fact check what gets out there, so listen knowing that you can and should check in on their site regularly. It's not a grift, it's not a hoax, it's an honest place where b******t goes to die. They can use that if they want (it's good right?). ENJOY! As stated in the episode title, 'The Good Boy' (aka 'Heel' in the US) is out and about now, in which Anson plays alongside the powerful duo of Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough. Anson is capable of playing characters who aren't necessarily immediately charming, let's say, and some that might require a little work to warm to, but always make for some truly captivating and interesting, memorable performances which inspire conversation, debate and thought. So it goes without saying that this chat is an awesome one as Pip finds out where these choices originate, and traces the source of Anson's acting path. Of course there are so many facets and angles covered too, including basically becoming a fully functioning Sex Pistols tribute band by way of 'Pistol' (in which he was coached by Underworld!), his love of a film set, being a nepo gangster, the School of Kate Winslett, acting alongside Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Pierce Brosnan and so many more, and just a huge amount of fascinating goodies from his time in front of and nearby the camera. But all is well! The planes are not intrusive (apart from to the sunlight), and the chat is not a simple rehash of old things, because how could it be? So much has happened since, though one thing remains - Taskmaster is the immovable object and we are all much better for it. Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain.
