#042 Shocking Divorce, Suicidal Thoughts, Switching to A Construction Career, Failing & Succeeding!
On this episode we sit down with Nick Stevens, AKA “Big
Daddy Decks”. Nick is in sales for a deck builder in the North Carolina area.
Nick is also a business and sales coach for aspiring deck builders who are seeking
to start their own company OR enhance their existing business.
The BEST part of this episode is Nick’s entrance into the
construction industry. A LOT of people message me about making a career change,
entering construction in their 30’s, 40’s, or even 50’s…. Nick is the living
example that it can be done!
More importantly, Nick failed when he first entered the
industry. As it turned out he was in the wrong role, but he didn’t quit. Also at
that time, Nick was at his personal rock bottom; shocked by divorce, depressed,
drinking too much, and sleeping on his friend’s couches, he struggled to find himself.
You are most qualified to help the person you use to be, which
is why Nick uses his career to help people “build the business man and the
business plan”. Listening to Nick’s triumphant life story is something everyone
can learn from!
Listen, learn, get inspired!

#039 Effects Of Racism Across Generations, Not Being A Victim, Finding Success In Construction Jobs!
This episode introduces you to the "white collar" world of construction with my former colleague Sam Gray. Sam is an Assistant Project Manager for a 9-figure General Contractor in Southwest Florida, working on a range of projects that includes; hotels, multi-family high rises, hospitals, country clubs, etc.
Sam embodies everything that an executive in construction wants to see in young talent. To be honest, Sam embodies many qualities that I want my own son to embody one day. Sam IS hard work, discipline and heart... combined with confidence, humility, and a HUNGER to learn. He demands to earn his education and experience before he gets to the next step.
Sam shares he and his family's experience with racism; from what it was like during the segregation era in Louisiana, to the construction industry in the 1970's and 1980's, to today. He describes the effect that had on his father, how his father used that to forge him into the man he became, and how he used it to forge Sam into the resilient man he is today (spoiler, Sam's father is his hero and has no time for a victim mentality).
Finally Sam shares his perspective of the construction industry today, as well as a message to those who may not be considering the industry because of a negative narrative that may have been created in their mind.
