Odysseus Comes Home to Penelope | The Odyssey Finale, Ep. 14

This is the final episode of a sleep-story adaptation of Homer's Odyssey: after twenty years apart, Odysseus and Penelope are reunited through the secret of the olive tree bed, and Odysseus finds his father Laertes in the orchard. Euryclea climbs the stairs to wake Penelope, who can't let herself believe the news. She comes down and sits across the fire from the stranger, then tests him with the one secret only the two of them share: the bed Odysseus built around a living olive tree. Athena holds back the dawn so they can have a longer night, and Odysseus tells Penelope the whole story of his journey. In the morning he finds Laertes working in the orchard and proves who he is with the trees his father gave him as a boy, and Athena brings peace to Ithaca. Adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain prose translation (Books XXIII–XXIV), with gentle narration for sleep. Jacob opens and closes this finale with a thank-you to everyone who followed the series. What's covered in this video: - Euryclea wakes Penelope with the news that Odysseus is home, and Penelope refuses to believe it. - Penelope sits across the fire from Odysseus in silence while Telemachus calls her heart harder than stone, and Phemius plays a wedding dance to hide what happened from the town. - Penelope tests Odysseus by asking for their bed to be moved, and he reveals that he built it around a living olive tree. - Odysseus and Penelope embrace like a shipwrecked sailor reaching land, and Athena holds back the dawn to lengthen their night. - Odysseus shares Teiresias's prophecy of the oar and a gentle old age, then tells Penelope his entire story, from the Lotus-Eaters to the Phaeacians. - In the underworld, Agamemnon hears the suitors' story and praises Penelope's faithfulness. - Odysseus finds his father Laertes in the orchard and proves who he is with the scar and the fruit trees Laertes gave him as a boy. - Athena and Zeus end the feud with the suitors' families and bring peace to Ithaca. Mentioned in this video: The Odyssey, Homer, Samuel Butler translation, Odyssey finale, Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus, Laertes, Euryclea, Eurynome, Phemius, Medon, Dolius, Eupeithes, Halitherses, Athena, Zeus, Hermes, Agamemnon, Teiresias, Mentor, Ithaca, the olive tree bed, Penelope's test, the reunion of Odysseus and Penelope, Odysseus and Laertes, the orchard of Laertes, the meadow of asphodel, Lotus-Eaters, Cyclops, bag of winds, Circe, the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, cattle of the Sun, Calypso, Phaeacians, Greek mythology sleep story, bedtime story for adults, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. Melt Away Neck & Jaw Tension | A Honey-Warm Sleep Meditation

This is a guided sleep meditation for neck tension, jaw clenching, and teeth grinding, using a warm honey visualization that moves from the crown of your head down to your toes. Warm, heavy honey melts through the scalp, jaw, neck, shoulders, and the rest of the body, one area at a time, with gentle companion talk-down woven between each part. The meditation speaks directly to the muscles that brace and guard us all day, thanks them, and lets them rest, then leaves an overnight anchor so the jaw can keep softening while you sleep. 0:00 Intro 1:51 Setting Down the Armour 5:08 Warm Honey at the Crown 8:41 Why the Body Braces 11:06 Letting the Jaw Unclench 14:12 Melting Neck and Shoulder Tension 19:40 I've Got the Watch Tonight 21:42 Honey All the Way to Your Toes 25:43 If Your Jaw Tightens Tonight 29:15 Sleep Sounds What's covered in this video: - The opening frames everyday muscle tension as the body's armour, built to protect us through the day, and thanks the shoulders, neck, and jaw before releasing them. - A honey visualization begins at the crown and melts through the scalp, forehead, eyes, and temples. - A talk-down section reframes clenching and bracing as the body's way of protecting you, and hands the watch over to Jacob for the night. - The jaw release guides the back teeth apart and the tongue down from the roof of the mouth, for people who clench or grind their teeth at night. - The honey moves through the neck, the base of the skull, and the trapezius and shoulders, with a short breathing sequence at the shoulders. - The closing carries the honey through the arms, back, hips, and legs to the toes, and ends with an overnight anchor for nighttime jaw clenching. Mentioned in this video: guided sleep meditation, sleep talk down, honey visualization, body scan, somatic relaxation, progressive muscle release, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, bruxism, jaw tension, TMJ tension, neck tension, shoulder tension, trapezius, base of the skull, tongue posture, breath awareness, muscle armour, protective bracing, overnight sleep anchor, deep sleep, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. A listener wrote to me recently about waking every morning with a sore jaw, neck, and shoulders, and about the muscles that act as our daily armour. I haven't stopped thinking about that phrase. So many of us hold the day in our bodies long after it ends, and I wanted to make something that speaks straight to those muscles and lets them rest. Where do you carry your day? The Odyssey Sleep Story, Episode 13: The Bow

Tonight's episode is the one the whole Odyssey has been walking toward. Penelope brings down her husband's great bow after twenty years, and one suitor after another fails to bend it — until the old beggar by the door asks to hold it for a moment. When Odysseus strings it as easily as a musician strings a lyre, the string sings like a swallow, Zeus thunders from a clear sky, and the long homecoming finally turns. Has something you'd almost stopped hoping for ever arrived all at once? This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation and told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to. Episode 13 covers Books XX, XXI and XXII of the Odyssey. Odysseus lies awake through his last night as a beggar until Athena sends him to sleep, while Penelope weeps upstairs after dreaming her husband lay beside her. At dawn Zeus thunders from a cloudless sky and a tired mill-woman prays that this will be the suitors' last meal. Philoetius the cattle-man arrives and grieves for his absent master, Ctesippus hurls a cow's hoof at the stranger, and the seer Theoclymenus sees the hall running with blood and crowded with ghosts. Then Penelope brings out the bow of Odysseus and sets the contest: string it, and shoot through twelve axes. Telemachus nearly succeeds, the suitors fail one by one, and outside in the yard Odysseus reveals himself to Eumaeus and Philoetius by his scar. Back in the hall, Odysseus strings the bow, sends an arrow through every axe, and turns it on the suitors, with Telemachus, Eumaeus, Philoetius, and Athena at his side. 0:00 Intro 2:50 The Last Sleepless Night 9:20 Thunder From a Clear Sky 12:20 The Cattle-Man 16:55 The Seer's Vision 20:35 The Bow Comes Down 26:20 Twelve Axes in a Row 31:30 The Scar in the Courtyard 38:50 Into the Beggar's Hands 41:30 The Bow Sings 44:35 On the Threshold 54:40 A Swallow in the Rafters 1:02:20 The Hall Made Clean 1:08:15 Sleep Sounds What's covered in this video: - Odysseus's sleepless night, Athena's promise, and Penelope's dream that her husband was lying beside her. - The double omen at dawn: thunder from a clear sky, and the mill-woman's prayer. - Philoetius the cattle-man's loyalty, Ctesippus's thrown hoof, and Theoclymenus's vision of the doomed hall. - Penelope bringing down the bow of Iphitus and announcing the contest of the twelve axes. - Telemachus's attempt, the suitors' failures, and Odysseus revealing himself to Eumaeus and Philoetius by the scar. - The stringing of the bow, the shot through the axes, and the battle for the hall. - Athena on the rafters in the form of a swallow, the sparing of Phemius and Medon, and the purification of the house. Mentioned in this video: Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus, Euryclea, Eumaeus, Philoetius, Melanthius, Antinous, Eurymachus, Amphinomus, Ctesippus, Leiodes, Theoclymenus, Phemius, Medon, Iphitus, Athena, Zeus, Apollo, Artemis, the bow of Odysseus, the twelve axes, the suitors of Ithaca, Homer's Odyssey, Samuel Butler translation, sleep story, bedtime story for adults, guided sleep narration, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. The Cove of Hidden Pearls | Sleep Story for an Open Heart

This is a magical bedtime story for healing and opening your heart again, about a young woman who follows a sea-foam fox to a moonlit cave of glowing pearls and finds the one shell that has been waiting for her. Follow Iris down a hidden stairway in the cliffs to a cove where jellyfish glow like lanterns in the shallows, and into a sea cave lined with mother-of-pearl. Its pools hold thousands of oysters, one for every person in the world, kept by Nacre until each person is ready to come. Iris knows her own shell the moment she sees it, and Nacre explains how a pearl is made and why a shell that has stayed shut this long has been protecting something precious the whole time. Gentle shoreline waves and a soft brown noise bed carry the story and continue long after it ends, for uninterrupted sleep. 0:00 Intro 1:30 The Sea-Foam Fox 4:00 Lanterns in the Shallows 5:35 The Cave of Glowing Pearls 7:05 The Keeper of Every Shell 10:00 The Shell That Was Hers 13:10 How a Pearl Is Made 16:55 Talking to the Shell 19:25 The Shell Opens 26:10 Sleeping by the Tide 29:25 Sleep Sounds What's covered in this video: - The opening follows Iris, restless on a moonlit night, as a small fox made of sea foam leads her down a hidden stairway in the cliffs. - The cove below glows with drifting jellyfish, and the fox leads her into a sea cave lined with mother-of-pearl, where thousands of oysters rest in terraced pools. - Nacre, the keeper, explains that every shell belongs to someone somewhere in the world, and she holds each one until its person is ready to come. - Iris senses which oyster is hers, and Nacre explains how a pearl forms around something small and sharp, reframing the closed shell as a protective, loving part. - The turn comes when Iris thanks her shell and tells it she wants to work together, and it opens on its own to reveal the pearl inside. - The closing settles Iris in a boathouse by the water with the open shell against her heart and the fox curled at her feet, as the tide slows her breathing into sleep. Mentioned in this video: magical bedtime story, sleep story for healing, opening your heart, learning to trust again, emotional healing, self-compassion, protective parts, vulnerability, heartbreak recovery, pearls, oysters, sea cave, mother-of-pearl, sea-foam fox, glowing jellyfish, moonlit cove, ocean sleep story, ocean waves for sleep, brown noise, self-voiced sleep story, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. Some of the parts of us that feel the most stubborn, the walls we can't seem to take down, have been trying to keep us safe the whole time. In this story, somewhere in a glowing sea cave, there's a shell being kept for every one of us until we're ready. The Odyssey Sleep Story - Episode 12: The Scar

Tonight's episode holds the moment this whole series has been walking toward since the first episode: Penelope and Odysseus sitting three feet apart, both of them lying to protect the same thing, and neither one able to say so out loud yet. And then, without any warning at all, the truth arrives anyway — not through a confession, but through Euryclea's hands, recognizing a twenty-year-old scar before her mind even catches up to what she's touching. Has the truth ever reached you that way — not through words, but through something your body knew before you let yourself admit it? 0:00 Intro 3:45 The Beggars at the Door 11:00 Penelope Comes Down 21:40 Hiding the Armor 23:50 A Stranger's Story 29:30 The Brooch and the Tears 36:10 What the Nurse Was Asked to Do 39:30 The Scar 47:55 Twenty Geese 53:30 The Bow Not Yet Strung 58:00 Sleep Sounds This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to. Episode 12 covers Books XVIII and XIX of the Odyssey: a town beggar named Irus picks a fight with the disguised Odysseus at his own front door and is beaten in a single blow, Athena arranges for Penelope to appear before the suitors and collect gifts from every one of them while giving nothing back, and the evening ends with Eurymachus hurling a footstool that misses Odysseus and strikes a servant instead. After the house grows quiet, Odysseus and Telemachus hide the household's weapons, and Odysseus sits down for a long fireside conversation with his own wife, who doesn't recognize him. He tells her an invented story about hosting her husband years ago on Crete, describes the exact clothes Odysseus wore right down to a gold brooch, and reduces her to tears without ever revealing who he is. When Penelope calls for the household's old nurse, Euryclea, to wash the stranger's feet, Euryclea's hands find a scar on his leg from a boyhood boar hunt — and recognizes her master instantly. The episode ends with Penelope recounting a dream of an eagle killing her twenty geese, and announcing a contest for the following day that will decide who she marries. What's covered in this video: - Odysseus's one-punch fight with the town beggar Irus, and the wary respect it earns him from Amphinomus, the one suitor who tries to warn the others. - Athena's staging of Penelope's appearance before the suitors, and the gifts she collects from them while planning to give her hand to none of them. - Eurymachus's footstool thrown at Odysseus, and Telemachus finally ordering the suitors home for the night. - Odysseus and Telemachus quietly moving the household's weapons out of the hall before the household wakes. - The long fireside conversation between Odysseus and Penelope, including his invented account of hosting her husband on Crete and his precise description of Odysseus's cloak, brooch, and shirt. - Euryclea washing the disguised Odysseus's feet, recognizing the scar from his boyhood boar hunt on Mount Parnassus, and being sworn to silence. - Penelope's dream of an eagle and her twenty geese, and her announcement of the axe-and-bow contest to be held the next day. The Odyssey Sleep Story, Episode 11: The Dog Remembered

Tonight's episode holds one of the oldest, quietest gut-punches in all of literature — a dog who waits twenty years for someone to come home, and recognizes him instantly, when every human in the house is fooled completely. There's something almost unbearably tender about being truly known by someone who never needed proof, an explanation, or a disguise removed. Has there ever been someone — or something — in your own life who saw straight through to who you really were, long before anyone else caught up? 0:00 Intro 3:20 The Walk Into Town 7:25 A Son Comes Home 12:55 The Seer's Promise 16:40 Melanthius at the Fountain 24:25 The Old Dog by the Gate 30:05 A Beggar at the Threshold 34:15 The Suitors Turn Cruel 41:40 The Footstool 44:45 Waiting for Sundown 54:15 Sleep Sounds This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to. Episode 11 covers Book XVII of the Odyssey: Telemachus returns home to a tearful reunion with his mother Penelope, and the seer Theoclymenus tells her that Odysseus is already on Ithaca. Meanwhile Odysseus, still disguised as an old beggar, walks into town with the swineherd Eumaeus, enduring an unprovoked assault from the goatherd Melanthius along the way. At the gates of his own house, his old hunting dog Argos — abandoned and dying, but still alive after twenty years — recognizes him instantly and quietly passes away. Odysseus then enters his own hall as a stranger, begs bread from the suitors occupying his house, and is struck with a thrown footstool by the cruelest of them, Antinous, while his own son watches in silent fury. What's covered in this video: - Telemachus's emotional homecoming to Penelope, and the seer Theoclymenus's declaration that Odysseus is already home. - The walk into town, where the goatherd Melanthius insults and kicks the disguised Odysseus at a roadside fountain. - The recognition and death of Argos, Odysseus's old hunting dog — one of the most famous scenes in the entire poem. - Odysseus's first hour inside his own hall as an unrecognized beggar, and his round of begging among the suitors. - Antinous striking Odysseus with a footstool, and the household's mounting unease at how the suitors are behaving toward a stranger. - Penelope's request to speak with the beggar, and Odysseus's decision to wait until the house has gone quiet at sundown. Mentioned in this video: Odysseus, Telemachus, Penelope, Eumaeus, Melanthius, Antinous, Eurymachus, Theoclymenus, Argos, Eurynome, Zeus, Athena, Apollo, the suitors of Ithaca, Homer's Odyssey, Samuel Butler translation, sleep story, bedtime story for adults, guided sleep narration, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. The Song Beneath the Sea | A Magical Sleep Story for Coming Home

There's a sound most of us stopped trusting a long time ago — the faint, steady hum that only shows up when we finally go still: right before sleep, in the pause after a deep breath, in the hush no one else is filling. Tonight's story follows a boy named Marlow down to the edge of the sea to find out where that sound has been leading, and he meets an ancient whale-being who's been singing it since before there were shores. It's a gentle reminder that the thing you've been quietly listening for was never far away, and that home is sometimes less a place you travel to than a stillness you finally let yourself feel. If you've ever caught a hum like that in your own stillest moments, what do you imagine it's been trying to tell you? This is a magical sleep story about a boy named Marlow who follows a faint, lifelong hum down to the sea and discovers it belongs to an ancient whale-being who has been singing it all along — calling him not away from home, but back into himself. 0:00 Intro 3:30 The Hum He Could Never Prove 7:45 The Night the Village Goes Still 12:20 The Shell That Sang Back 21:25 Carrying the Note Back Home 22:30 The Hum That Was Always Yours 24:20 Sleep Sounds Marlow has spent his whole life half-hearing a low hum in his stillest moments — after a hard cry, lying in the grass at midday, right before sleep — and dismissing it as wind, or his own pulse, or nothing at all. One unusually still night, he finally follows it down to the shore and meets Maren, an ancient whale-being who has been singing the same single note since before the coastline existed. Through their meeting, Marlow discovers that a small spiral shell he has carried since he can remember has been quietly humming the same note the entire time. The story is a gentle exploration of stillness, self-trust, and the idea that home can be a feeling you carry rather than a place you travel to. What's covered in this video: - The opening introduces Marlow's loud, loving, ordinary village life and the barely audible hum he's caught in stillness his whole life without ever trusting it. - The middle follows Marlow down to a moonlit shoreline where he meets Maren, an ancient whale-being, and explores themes of deep time, patience, and trusting something faint. - A turning point uses a small spiral shell Marlow has always carried to reveal that the hum he assumed was external had been part of him the whole time. - The closing widens the story's insight directly to the listener, inviting them to notice their own hum in tonight's stillness and let it carry them into sleep.
