245 - How to Avoid Accidental Maintenance

If your goal has been fat loss for months, but the scale keeps landing in the exact same 5 pound range, this episode is about the gap between those two things.   I call it accidental maintenance.   Your intention is fat loss… but working hard all week and loose all weekend adds up to the exact same static outcome as an intentional maintenance phase, minus every benefit that phase is actually supposed to give your body. I recorded this one from a live coaching call inside Look Like You Train, because I think almost everyone listening has spent time here.   In this episode I walk through the four places accidental maintenance actually lives. Your mindset, and why the identity work has to come before the meal plan. Your systems, promise-keeping, biweekly check-ins, and a real plan for the meals that fall outside your routine. Your environment, and what the research says about willpower versus a room that's already working against you. And the practical leaks nobody talks about, compensatory eating, alcohol, sleep, and recalibrating your calories as you actually lose, not on a fixed schedule.   I'm also sharing some of the research that convicted me while I was prepping this one, including a stat that stopped me in my tracks, people underreport what they actually eat by an average of 47 percent. If you've been doing everything and still not seeing it move, this episode is for you.     Thank you for being here — whether this is your first episode or you’ve been with me since Episode 1. 244 - Twisted Tuesdays: Stop Lying to Yourself - The Weekly Audit That Exposes Where You’re Really Stuck

It’s easy to tell yourself you’re doing fine. It’s harder to look in the accountability mirror and actually measure it. In this Twisted Tuesday, Amy breaks down the weekly audit she uses to assess whether her actions are aligned with the person she wants to be. She explains why tracking your behavior matters, how seemingly small broken promises can affect your confidence and “self-love meter,” and why difficult seasons are exactly when maintaining a few core habits becomes most important.   Amy walks through the areas she evaluates each week: her morning routine, daytime productivity, evening habits, nutrition, training and movement, weekends, and relationships. Rather than relying on vague feelings about whether the week was “good” or “bad,” she assigns numbers based on what actually happened and looks more closely at anything that needs improvement.   The real lesson is what happens next. If you discover you’re repeatedly hitting snooze, wasting time, falling off your nutrition plan, neglecting relationships, or abandoning your routine when life gets difficult, simply promising to “try harder” isn’t a strategy. Amy challenges you to identify the real tripwire and put a specific solution in place.   For Amy, this process reaches far beyond productivity. Staying aligned helps her mentally and physically show up for one of the biggest battles of her life: fighting cancer. She argues that when one part of life starts slipping, it can affect how you show up everywhere else.   If you’ve been feeling stagnant, inconsistent, frustrated with yourself, or stuck in the cycle of saying, “I’ll do better next week,” this episode gives you a simple framework for replacing judgment with data—and data with action. 243 - The Scale Went Up 3.9 Pounds—Here’s Why It Means Almost Nothing

What would you do if the scale suddenly jumped nearly four pounds overnight? Years ago, Amy admits that a result like this could have sent her into a spiral of frustration, food sabotage, excessive exercise, and negative self-talk. Today, she understands that a single weigh-in is only one data point—and often a misleading one.   In this episode: Amy delivers an important reality check about scale obsession, overnight weight fluctuations, and the emotional power many women unknowingly give to the number on the scale.  She explains how water retention, inflammation, hormones, sodium, carbohydrates, stress, activity levels, and strength training can all cause temporary weight changes that have little or nothing to do with body-fat gain. Amy also reveals how relying too heavily on the scale can distort your perception. You may wake up feeling leaner, notice that your jeans fit better, and feel confident—only to step on the scale, see a higher number, and suddenly convince yourself that your body looks worse. She challenges listeners to stop measuring success solely through weight loss and begin paying attention to the indicators that matter: measurements, clothing fit, strength, performance, energy, muscle development, behavioral consistency, and long-term trends. The episode also examines the dangerous “get away with it” mentality that can occur when someone abandons their plan over the weekend but sees a lower number on Monday. A temporary drop does not mean those choices created the result. It happened in spite of the behavior—not because of it. Most importantly, Amy explains that you cannot completely control how much weight you lose each week, but you can control whether you keep the promises you make to yourself. Your daily actions—not a random scale fluctuation—are the real evidence of progress.   Listen before your next weigh-in and learn how to take back the power you may have unknowingly handed to the scale. 242 - Twisted Tuesdays: The Church Café Taught Me More About Food Than Any Diet Ever Could

What happens when you're surrounded by cookies, donuts, coffee, and treats every month—but food no longer controls your thoughts?   In this Twisted Tuesday episode, Amy reflects on nearly two years of volunteering at her church café and the surprising lessons it's taught her about dieting, food guilt, and emotional eating. She shares how years of restrictive dieting once made baking feel stressful and triggering, but how building a healthier relationship with food has transformed those same experiences into something joyful.   Amy also discusses a fascinating pattern she's noticed: many women instinctively apologize for their food choices, labeling foods as "good" or "bad," while most men simply eat without explanation. Through these real-life conversations, she challenges common diet culture beliefs and explains why moderation—not restriction—is the key to long-term success.   The episode continues with a personal update about weekly date nights, keeping promises to yourself through daily habits, creating routines that strengthen discipline, and why consistency—not perfection—is what builds lasting confidence. From Bible reading and journaling to fitness habits and intentional relationships, Amy shares how small daily commitments compound into a healthier, happier life.   If you've ever struggled with food guilt, all-or-nothing thinking, emotional eating, or believing you have to earn your favorite foods, this episode will challenge your perspective and leave you with practical ways to build a healthier mindset. 241 - Why I Stopped My Own Diet 4 Weeks Early (And What It Taught Me)

Here's what actually happened.   The food noise came back louder than I expected, even after twenty years of doing this work. By week three, the scale was climbing instead of dropping, and my own biofeedback tracking, sleep, hunger, digestion, was flashing signals right alongside it.   In this episode I walk through exactly what happened, the mistake I made assuming my own formula was automatically the right approach for me in this exact season, and the actual research behind why it played out the way it did. Why restriction backfires psychologically. Why chronic dieters can respond differently to the same formula. And why sleep, not just the scale, might be the most important number you're not tracking. Plus where I landed two weeks after reversing, because the story doesn't end at the mistake.   If you've ever wondered whether the plan is the problem or something else is going on, this one's for you. 240 - Twisted Tuesdays: Training Never Gets Easier—You Just Get Stronger

Why do some people keep growing through hard seasons while others slowly lose momentum? In this candid, on-the-go episode, Amy shares the reality of training close to failure, why progressive overload means your workouts may never truly feel easy, and how learning to tolerate discomfort separates people who simply exercise from those who visibly build strength.   Amy also reflects on completing a 30-day personal commitment challenge designed to rebuild trust in herself. After realizing that years of tracking had started to feel automatic and emotionally meaningless, she returned to simple daily promises, visible wins, and honest accountability. She explains why accepting a loss instead of making excuses can create stronger behavior, how tracking can expose avoidance, and why repetition helps reinforce the identity of someone who follows through.   During a spontaneous grocery run, Amy shifts into practical strategies for making nutrition easier. She discusses bulk meal preparation, keeping flexible proteins and carbohydrates ready, reducing food waste, shopping with a plan, and avoiding unnecessary temptations. Her central message is simple but powerful: your environment is often stronger than your willpower, especially after stress and decision fatigue have worn you down.   This episode is for anyone who feels stagnant, inconsistent, or frustrated that healthy habits still require effort. You will learn why discomfort is not evidence that you are failing, why small promises matter more than dramatic declarations, and how better systems can help you make stronger choices without depending on motivation.   Main points include training close to failure and embracing productive discomfort, using progressive overload to build strength and muscle, rebuilding self-trust through seven-day and 30-day commitments, tracking wins and losses without excuses, using visual reminders to reinforce progress, creating identity-based habits through repetition, meal prepping with versatile proteins and carbohydrates, reducing food waste and unnecessary grocery trips, managing decision fatigue, and designing your environment to support your goals. 239 - Which Training Mistakes Are You Making w/ Erik Ledin

In This Episode:   The Mistake Nobody Catches The single biggest training mistake Erik sees in women 40+, even the ones who think they're pushing hard. It comes down to one thing: not appreciating that your recovery ability has changed.   Why Short Rest Intervals Are a Silent Killer HIIT, HYROX, boot camps, CrossFit-style metabolic conditioning. Erik explains why short rest interval training comes with a recovery premium most midlife women can't afford, and why it interferes with the muscle and strength gains you're actually training for.   Training vs. Working Out These are not the same thing. Erik breaks down the real difference and why you can go to the gym every single day and still make zero progress.   The "More Sets" Myth Why piling on more volume isn't the answer, and why 5 hard sets twice a week can beat 10 sets once a week.   The Soreness Trap If you've ever chased next-day soreness as proof your workout worked, this segment will change how you think about training.   The Real Number on Muscle and Metabolism Forget the "50 calories per pound of muscle" myth. Erik does the math live and gives you the real number.   The 5 Training Archetypes Erik built a quiz to identify exactly where you fall: The Effort Leaker – stopping 3-4 reps before failure without realizing it The Fatigue Chaser – chasing the burn, chasing exhaustion, chasing the wrong goal The Grinder – training 5-6 days a week and never actually recovering The Drifter – no consistency, no way to track progress On Track – the one who's actually doing it right   Take the quiz yourself: [link in show notes]   Muscle: The Organ of Longevity Why Erik calls muscle "the organ of longevity," the connection between leg strength and brain health, and why Alzheimer's is now being linked to insulin resistance and called "Type 3 Diabetes."   The Most Common Excuse for Skipping Strength Training And what Erik actually says back to it. 238 - Twisted Tuesday: Your Habits Are Lying to You: The Weekend Test That Reveals Who You Really Are

Are your habits truly part of your identity—or do they disappear as soon as the weekend begins? In this episode, Amy explains why Friday night through Sunday can either reinforce your progress or quietly erase the work you completed during the week. She shares how an unexpected change in her routine forced her to examine whether her meals, walking, and personal commitments were dependent on structure or had become genuine habits.   Amy also explores why drinking water has become far more than a health goal. By committing to one gallon a day, she created a daily promise that requires planning, awareness, and presence. Every completed day becomes evidence that she can trust herself, while every difficult workout becomes practice for leaning into discomfort rather than escaping it.   The episode examines how small promises can reshape your identity, why repeatedly starting over can damage confidence, how checkpoints make consistency easier, and why preparing decisions in advance prevents you from choosing the comfortable option when motivation fades. You will learn why your weekends are the real test of your habits, how one simple daily promise can rebuild self-belief, why discomfort is necessary for growth, and how your fitness choices can prepare you to face harder battles in your health, relationships, and life.   Listen now, audit the way you show up when your routine changes, and discover whether your habits are creating the person you want to become—or keeping you trapped in another cycle of starting over.
