What I heard you say is it is the victims fault for what another person does to them. While what is stated is somewhat true, it is not the only outcome in which I would say is a lot more rare than in most cases.
The pastor completely avoids the reality of actual church hurt that is incredibly damaging by focusing on patterns of why someone gets hurt. I get the sense that he has gleaned from others that adhere to “childhood wounds” such as from the enneagram. Placing so much emphasis on past hurts to explain current hurt also circumvents current hurt. I do not recall at any time that current hurt is also a reality. In basic terms, this pastor gave a license for those in a position of authority to write off what they have done that hurts others. The scenario, a pastor can and does something hurtful, the one hurt voices that, but now a pastor can say they are just reacting out of past hurts… that in and of itself is abusive.
Tread lightly with this teacher. Especially if he and the leadership have utilized the Enneagram or from authors/teachers who use it, which I wouldn’t be surprised this church is.
