497 - From Fat In My 20's to Fit In 40's - 5 Things That Changed

In 2005, I was 27 years old, newly married, working for myself, and about 30–35 pounds heavier than I am today. I worked out occasionally, ate a lot of fast food, blamed some of my limitations on genetics, and had no idea what it actually took to build a healthy lifestyle that would last. Now I’m 48, and while I’m certainly not the fittest or strongest guy my age, I’m in dramatically better shape than I was 21 years ago. More importantly, I’ve built habits and a mindset that have kept my health and fitness moving in the right direction for decades. So I sat down and asked myself: What do I know and believe about health and fitness now that I had absolutely no clue about in my 20s? In this episode, I break down the five biggest changes: I started training consistently. I stopped relying on fast food and restaurant meals. I learned to challenge myself in the gym instead of playing it safe. I changed my identity and started seeing myself as a fit person. I kept learning about training, nutrition, and health. None of these changes happened overnight, and none of them required a perfect diet, a magic supplement, or some extreme fitness program. They were simple things that I gradually made part of my life. And that may be the most important lesson of all: being fit won't make you happy, but taking care of yourself can give you more strength, energy, confidence, and freedom to enjoy the life you already have. 7 Lessons For Men Over 40: https://www.digitalbarbell.com/muscleover40 Work with us: www.digitalbarbell.com/contact-us

495 - Fell Off Track? 5 Steps to Get Back Into Your Fitness Routine

Your clothes were fitting better. You were getting stronger. You had more energy. Maybe you even lost 10 pounds. Then summer happened. A few missed workouts turned into a few more. There were more dinners out, more takeout, a vacation (or two), and before you knew it, your workout and nutrition routines had completely fallen apart. Now you're looking at the calendar thinking, “How the heck do I get back on track?” In this episode, we give you 5 practical steps to help you rebuild your fitness routine without trying to make up for lost time or punish yourself for being inconsistent. You'll learn: • Why you shouldn't try to make up for missed workouts or “undo” the damage with extreme dieting• How to restart your strength training, including how many days to train, how to choose your weights, and when to reduce your training volume• Why setting a non-workout activity goal can help you rebuild momentum• How to use a 90% consistency goal instead of chasing perfection• Specific nutrition targets for protein, fruits and vegetables, hydration, and even a little daily “fun food” Whether you fell off track this summer, during the holidays, or just had a crazy few months, these strategies will help you stop starting over and get back to doing the basics consistently.
