Episode 356: Your First Hire: Who It Should Be And Who It Shouldn't Be

Who Should You Hire First? Build the Right Team for Your BusinessWho should your first hire be—a practitioner, instructor, admin, or manager? For many boutique fitness, Pilates, physical therapy, and wellness business owners, hiring happens when they’re already overwhelmed. But hiring out of desperation can lead to putting the right person in the wrong role—or hiring someone without being clear about what you actually need. In this episode of the Female emPOWERed Podcast, Christa Gurka breaks down how to determine who your business really needs next using an accountability chart. Instead of building jobs around people you already know and like, Christa explains how to define the role first, identify the outcomes that person needs to own, and then find the right person with the skills to deliver them. In This Episode, You’ll Learn: How to determine who your first—or next—hire should beThe difference between an organizational chart and an accountability chartWhy you should define the role before looking for the personHow to identify which “seat” will give you the most valuable time backWhy your best instructor or clinician may not make the best managerThe difference between being the right person and being in the right seatThe 3–5 measurable outcomes every role should ownWhen hiring an admin makes sense—and when hiring another practitioner is smarterWhat a true operations manager should take off the owner’s plateWhy hiring based on skill set matters more than convenienceHow the right hire can help move you out of day-to-day operations and into the CEO roleWho Should You Hire First? Instead of asking: “Who is the least expensive person I can hire?” Ask: “Which seat, if filled today, would give me the most high-value hours back and help bridge the gap between where my business is now and where I want it to go?” If your schedule is maxed out because you’re treating patients or teaching classes, another clinician or instructor may be the right hire. If you’re spending hours answering calls, scheduling clients, following up on leads, collecting payments, and managing cancellations, an administrative hire may create a much bigger return. And if you’re tired of managing every team member, solving every problem, and overseeing every system yourself, it may be time for an operations or studio manager. The Accountability Chart Every business needs a few core functions: CEO/Visionary: Sets the direction and protects the long-term health of the business. Operations: Turns the CEO’s vision into a business that can run day-to-day without the owner in the room. Marketing: Attracts qualified leads. Sales: Turns those qualified leads into committed, paying customers. Admin/Client Support: Owns the client experience outside of the actual service. Practitioner/Instructor/Coach: Delivers the exceptional client experience the business promises. One person can fill multiple seats, especially in a small business. But each seat needs clearly defined responsibilities and outcomes. Key Takeaway If you can’t clearly articulate in one sentence what a role is responsible for producing, you’re not ready to hire for it. Before posting your next job opening, map out your accountability chart. Determine which seat you want to get out of, define the 3–5 outcomes that seat owns, and then hire the person with the right skills to deliver those results. Don’t build a job around a person. Build the role your business needs—and then find the right person to fill it. Episode 355: What You’re Avoiding Is Slowing Your Growth

What decision have you been putting off in your business? Maybe it’s raising your prices. Maybe it’s addressing an underperforming team member, enforcing a boundary, changing your schedule, or finally letting someone go. In this episode of the Female emPOWERed Podcast, Christa Gurka gets into one of the most expensive habits business owners have: avoidance. Drawing from her own experiences growing Pilates in the Grove, Christa explains how avoiding uncomfortable decisions can quietly cost your business thousands of dollars, damage your team culture, consume your time, and keep you stuck in the day-to-day operations of your business. She also shares a practical framework for making difficult decisions faster—without waiting until the problem becomes even more expensive or complicated. In This Episode, You’ll Learn: The four areas where business owners are most likely to avoid difficult decisionsWhy “I’m too busy” can actually be avoidance in disguiseHow avoiding pricing conversations can cost your business five or even six figuresWhy tolerating an underperforming or toxic team member impacts your entire company cultureThe difference between setting a boundary and actually holding itWhy doing someone else’s job instead of holding them accountable isn’t good leadershipHow avoidance can slowly erode your confidence as a CEOWhy waiting rarely makes a difficult conversation easierA simple decision-making framework for tackling the issues you’ve been putting offThe Decision-Making Framework When you find yourself avoiding a decision, Christa recommends asking: Does this make my business more or less profitable? Does this create more simplicity or more complexity? Is this using my best hours and my best people wisely? Twelve months from now, will this decision move me closer to my goals or farther away? The goal isn’t to eliminate the discomfort that comes with difficult conversations. It’s to become the kind of leader who can feel that discomfort and make the right decision anyway. Key Takeaway Avoidance rarely makes a business problem disappear. More often, it makes the eventual decision more expensive, more uncomfortable, and more complicated. The conversation you’re avoiding today could be exactly the conversation your business needs in order to grow. Episode 352: Growth Through Acquisition: Why You Don't Have to Start From Scratch

What if opening a second location wasn't your only option for growth? In this episode of the Female emPOWERed Podcast, Christa Gurka introduces one of the most overlooked growth strategies in the boutique fitness and wellness industry: Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA). Instead of building a new studio from scratch, what if you could buy an existing, profitable business with an established client base, trained team, and recurring revenue? Christa walks through the real numbers behind buying versus building, explains how SBA financing works, and shares why acquiring an existing business can help you skip years of startup risk while accelerating profitability. Whether you own a Pilates studio, PT practice, yoga studio, or wellness business, this episode will change the way you think about scaling.  In This Episode, You'll Learn:  What Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) is  Why buying a business can be less expensive than starting from scratch  How SBA loans can finance up to 90% of a business acquisition  The real math behind buying vs. building a second location  What makes an existing business valuable to buyers  Creative acquisition strategies, including seller financing and earn-outs  How to find acquisition opportunities in your local market  Why profitability, systems, and recurring revenue matter more than size  How acquisitions can accelerate long-term business growth Key Takeaways ✔️ Growth doesn't always mean starting from zero. ✔️ A profitable, cash-flowing business may cost less to acquire than building a new location. ✔️ SBA financing makes business acquisitions accessible to many small business owners. ✔️ Systems, leadership, and recurring revenue increase both business value and acquisition opportunities. ✔️ Thinking like an investor can dramatically change your long-term wealth-building strategy.  Resources Mentioned 🌐 Work with Christa Christa Gurka Coaching Programs 📈 Elevate to Exit Learn how to increase your business value, reduce owner dependence, and prepare your business for future growth or sale. 📲 Instagram @christagurka Connect with Christa 🌐 Christa Gurka Website 🎙 Subscribe to the Female emPOWERed Podcast for weekly business strategies designed specifically for Pilates studios, cash-based PT practices, boutique fitness studios, and wellness business owners. Episode 351: Building a Business Someone Would Actually Want to Buy — Even If You Never Plan to Sell

What makes one studio worth hundreds of thousands of dollars more than another—even when both generate the exact same revenue and profit? In this episode of the Female emPOWERed Podcast, Christa Gurka breaks down the real factors that determine the value of your boutique fitness, Pilates, or wellness business. Drawing from her own experience selling Pilates in the Grove in 2025, Christa explains why the most valuable businesses aren't necessarily built by the best instructors—they're built on systems, leadership, profitability, and predictability.  In this episode, you'll learn:  Why owner dependence dramatically reduces business value  The difference between owning a business and owning a job  How buyers evaluate boutique fitness and wellness businesses  Why recurring revenue matters more than top-line sales  The role systems and SOPs play in increasing valuation  How to identify the bottlenecks keeping your business dependent on you  Why leadership layers and delegation are essential for long-term growth  The concept of "exit without selling" and how to achieve true time freedom  The hidden cost of being the person who makes every decision The three levers that increase business value: 1. Reduce owner dependency If your clients, revenue, and day-to-day operations all depend on you, buyers see risk. The less your business relies on the owner, the more valuable it becomes. 2. Build recurring, documented revenue Memberships, clear pricing, documented systems, and repeatable processes create predictability and make your business more attractive to both buyers and future leaders. 3. Create a leadership layer A strong second-in-command and clearly defined roles allow your business to thrive—even when you're not in the room. Key takeaway Whether you plan to sell your business someday or keep it forever, the process is the same: build systems, develop leaders, document your operations, and remove yourself as the bottleneck. The businesses that create true financial freedom are the ones that can operate successfully without the owner being involved in every decision.  Resources mentioned in this episode Elevate to Exit: christagurka.com/elevate Fit Biz Accelerator: christagurka.com/accelerator Operational Scorecard: christagurka.com/operationalscorecard If this episode resonated with you, share it with another studio owner who wants to build a business that's profitable, sustainable, and valuable—whether they ever plan to sell it or not.
