Women Are Not Just Small Men

We took a little summer siesta. We're back. Michelle is roughly eleven thousand weeks pregnant, Meghan has been to New Jersey more times than any human should, and Gene is still policing the USB-C cable situation on his half of the table. The meat of this one comes out of the seminar we hosted with Dr. Lily, a sports cardiologist from Hopkins, who came out to talk to a room full of women about their hearts. Gene was the lone male in attendance and handled it with his usual grace, which is to say he got heckled. Here's the thing that stuck: women are not just small men. That sounds obvious until you realize how much of medicine still treats them that way. Add in the fact that women get gaslit constantly, told it's hormones, told it's anxiety, told they're about to get their period, and you end up with some of the highest rates of undiagnosed heart attacks in the country. Elephant sitting on your chest? Probably just a Thursday. The crew gets into what actually matters for heart health and what doesn't. Why snoring should be treated like a red flag until a sleep study says otherwise. Why statins get a bad rap they mostly don't deserve. Why your fish oil is doing nothing for your heart (sorry). What a calcium score actually tells you, and the part most people get wrong: lowering your cholesterol number doesn't clear the plaque that's already there. And what counts as real family history versus your grandfather having a heart attack at 72. Then we close out with summer disruption. Nine years in, we get to watch how people handle a break in their routine, and there are basically two groups. The ones who get pulled back like a bungee cord, and the ones for whom two weeks away becomes a wall they can't get over. Turns out how long you've been here matters a lot. Also: Michelle heads out on maternity leave soon, you'll meet our new physio coach Caitlin, and Gene wants everyone to know Spider-Man was really good. You Are The Problem (And The Solution)

This week the crew digs into attribution bias, which is a fancy way of saying we're all really good at blaming the wrong thing. Someone else is late because they're irresponsible. We're late, and it's the traffic, the dog, and the meeting that ran long. And when it comes to our own bodies, we do the same thing. The knee. The bad night of sleep. The weight that won't budge. We point at the nearest, easiest target and never zoom out to look at the whole messy picture. Dr. Gene, Dr. Meghan, and Dr. Michelle get into why "I've tried everything" usually means you haven't tried the hard thing yet. Why the person swearing they're not stressed is often the most stressed one in the room. And why detaching and staying busy is not the same as being calm, no matter how chill you look. There's a good bit in here about the iceberg problem too. When someone finally asks how you're doing, and you don't even know where to start, because telling them the truth means explaining the six months of context underneath it. If you've ever gone "I'm fine" because the real answer felt like too much, this is for you. The takeaway is a tough one but it's the whole point: the stuff happening around you is real, but you're the one in charge of what you do with it. Which means, most of the time, you're the problem. And if that stings a little, good, because it also means you're the solution. Stay cool out there.  Recorded live at Recharge in Howard County, Maryland. www.rechargexfit.com
