A Inside Look at Health Coaching – Special Series: Meet Tina

Running on Empty: Tina's Health Coaching Journey Begins We're doing it again. Last time, we opened the doors to real health coaching sessions with Joanna, and so many of you told us how much it helped to hear coaching in action — not the polished version, the real one. So we're back for with another awesome woman. Over the next several episodes, you'll hear real coaching conversations between Danna and a client we're calling Tina. Nothing scripted, nothing cleaned up. Meet Tina Tina is a working mom navigating the kind of full-plate exhaustion so many of you know — a purpose-driven career in female health, a 2-year-old daughter, and a body that's been quietly sending up flares for years. Subscribe so you don't miss a chapter of her story. Chapter One: The Health History Tina walks in already fluent in taking care of everyone but herself — the friend people call, the one who tells others it's okay to ask for help, even as she struggles to take her own advice. She loves her life and her purpose-driven work protecting pregnant women and newborns. She's also running on empty, and before any symptoms come up, what surfaces first is guilt: over daycare hours, over comparing herself to friends with more support, over needing help at all. Danna traces when each piece of Tina's health history started. Sleep issues go back to childhood night terrors, once managed by movement routines that vanished along with her free time. Digestive trouble traces to a teenage eating disorder that took years to move past, though her digestion never fully recovered. Layer on chronic deficiencies severe enough to require years of IV iron infusions, a new endometriosis diagnosis, and a family history of breast cancer that spikes her anxiety every screening season — and it's clear why Tina feels like she's standing in a hole, unsure which thread to pull first. Danna's answer: don't start with food. Start with stress and sleep, because nothing else sticks on an empty tank. She names something Tina's been fighting alone — that knowing what's healthy and living it out are two different skills. All doctors have a doctor. All health coaches have a health coach. Nothing gets fixed in this first call, but a plan starts taking shape, and a woman who spends her career advocating for others finally lets someone advocate for her. US vs. Swiss Grocery Shopping: A Culture Clash - So Frickin' Mini

Got 10 Minutes? Why Europeans Are Losing It Over American Grocery Stores The World Cup brought a wave of Europeans into US grocery stores — and the internet lost it over package sizes. "We only shop once a month," the Americans said. "Then how is your fresh food still good?" the Europeans replied. Megan went down the comment-section rabbit hole and immediately needed Danna. What follows is a genuinely fascinating look at how shopping behavior, fridge size, and even bread shelf life reveal way more about a culture than anyone expects. What You'll Learn: Why a "normal" Swiss fridge is basically the size of an American RV fridgeHow often Danna and Megan actually grocery shop — and why walking vs. driving changes everythingThe freezer-the-size-of-your-face problem (it's real, and it's rough)Why Swiss bread goes stale in two days while American bread practically fossilizesThe Costco-in-France discovery that surprised even Megan — and where that food is actually coming fromWhy "robot strawberries" that last a month in the US would never survive in a Swiss kitchenThe real reason behind it all: space constraints, regulation, and culture all colliding in your produce aisle That's your 10 minutes. Go check your fridge. Be honest about your freezer situation. Want more on this? We've got 15 more grocery store topics queued up — including a full price comparison between US and Swiss basics. How to Advocate for Yourself When the Doctor Says It's All in Your Head ft. Belinda Balscheit

"Your Bloods Look Normal" Is Not a Diagnosis: Patient Advocacy & Perimenopause ft. Belinda Balscheit Listener Amanda was so passionate about today's guest, she sent a voice message to make sure we booked her. She was right. Belinda Balscheit is a two-time cancer survivor, women's health advocate, and patient advocacy powerhouse based in Basel — and this conversation is one of the most important we've had on the show. If you've ever been told your symptoms are all in your head, dismissed by a doctor despite knowing something is deeply wrong, or simply felt lost in a medical system that wasn't built with women in mind — this one's for you. About Belinda Balscheit: Belinda works in a global pharmaceutical company in Basel and is a fierce patient advocate for women's health. Diagnosed with a rare cancer at 29 and breast cancer at 37 — with three girls under three — she navigated 11.5 years of treatment, two rounds of menopause, and a near-complete nervous system collapse before anyone connected the dots. She's writing a book called Biologically Dismissed: You Were Never the Problem, and she's currently on Instagram documenting all 142 symptoms of menopause, one by one. Follow her — it's essential viewing. What You'll Learn: Why your doctor may be working off a 30-year-old study — and what that means for your careHow Belinda went through menopause twice — and what that taught her about hormones, dismissal, and survivalThe practical advocacy toolkit: symptom tracking, building your case, and walking into appointments with evidenceWhy "your bloods look normal" and "it's probably stress" are not diagnoses — and what to say backThe statistic that stopped everyone cold: 94% of women on HRT report a significant reduction in suicidal thoughtsHow to fire a doctor who isn't listening (yes, you can, and yes, you should)Why perimenopause and menopause aren't diseases — but untreated, they can cause ones Real Talk Moments: Belinda shares the moment she discovered she had 47 out of 49 menopause symptoms — and 40 of them were an eight out of ten in severity. She also opens up about reaching a point where she didn't want to be here anymore after three doctors in three weeks told her it was all in her head. Danna shares her own experience of arriving at a doctor with a list of 24 symptoms and being sent home with the same dismissal. The rage was mutual. The solidarity was real. Belinda's Parting Wisdom: "Knowledge is empowerment. Once you have it, run." The US, the Swiss & the Food Pyramid Nobody Told You About - So Frickin' Mini

Got 10 Minutes? Grains at the Base? Thanks, Lobbying. Megan found a Dr. Jason Fung video called "The Food Pyramid Lie: Why We Got Fat" and immediately needed to talk about it. So here we are. The food pyramid you grew up with — the one that told you to build your entire diet on a mountain of bread and grains — was not based on science. It was based on lobbying. And the Swiss one? Also a little sus. Danna had never even heard of the Swiss food pyramid before this episode. She has thoughts. What You'll Learn: What the old US food pyramid actually looked like — and why it made us all fatter and sickerHow the new US food pyramid flipped everything (literally — it's now inverted)The Swiss food pyramid breakdown — and what it gets right and wrongWhy protein is criminally underrepresented in every government food guideThe dairy lobby problem — and why "lactose-free" isn't necessarily the health win you think it isWhy fat got vilified in the '80s (spoiler: money) and what that did to public healthDanna's version of the ideal food pyramid — water and protein fans, this one's for you That's your 10 minutes. Go look up the Swiss food pyramid. Then get mad. Then eat more protein. Want a full episode diving into lobbying, food policy, and who's actually deciding what we eat? Let us know. Kombucha! What's all the fuss? ft. Gina Steinhauser, Swiss Kombucha Company

Got Booch? Ever grabbed a kombucha off the shelf thinking you're doing your gut a favor? Yeah… about that. In this episode, we sit down with Gina, founder of the Swiss Kombucha Company, to blow the lid off what's actually in most store-bought kombucha—and spoiler alert, a lot of it isn't even kombucha. Gina takes us behind the scenes of her journey from brewing 200 liters a month in her sticky kitchen to visiting 30+ breweries across North America and Europe (pretending to write a blog that never happened) to launching her own company. What started as a personal quest to manage food allergies turned into a full-blown mission to make the real deal—no concentrates, no pasteurization, no BS. But this conversation goes way beyond the bottle. We get into the gut-brain connection, why your "healthy" yogurt probably isn't doing what you think it is, and the infuriating reality of being a woman whose doctor Googles your symptoms on Wikipedia and tells you you're too fat to have Celiac disease. What You'll Learn: What kombucha actually is—and the three ways producers fake itWhy shelf-stable kombucha is never real kombuchaThe cheap tool that reveals how much sugar is really in your bottle vs. what the label claimsGreen and white tea over black—and why heavy metals matterFood allergies vs. food sensitivities: why doctors miss the slow onesWhy kombucha is gut-friendly but NOT a probiotic supplementDanna's PSA: if you have histamine intolerance, fermented foods might be making things worse Real Talk Moments: Gina shares the jaw-dropping story of being dismissed by a doctor who pulled up Wikipedia to prove she couldn't have Celiac disease—because she wasn't thin enough. Danna opens up about being told her 25-symptom list was "all in her head" and getting put on antidepressants instead of being properly tested. And the whole crew gets fired up about the quick-fix culture that taught us to reach for a pill instead of questioning what's on our plate—while we spend hours scrolling Facebook saying we "don't have time" to cook. Gina's Pro Tips for Finding Real Kombucha: If it's not refrigerated, it's not real kombuchaContact the producer—ask if they filter, pasteurize, or use a concentrate (if they don't respond, that's your answer)Check the sugar content yourself with a BRIX meter—if the label is lying about sugar, what else are they lying about? The 5 Love Languages (Plus 2 Danna Made Up) - So Frickin' Mini

Got 10 Minutes? Speaking Your Partner's Language (No, Not That One) It came up on the last So Frickin' Healthy Live. It keeps coming up in conversations. And honestly, it should come up more — because most relationship friction isn't about not loving each other enough, it's about not speaking the same language. Danna and Megan break down all five love languages, share what's working (and what took years to figure out) in their own marriages — and Danna officially adds two more to the list that Gary Chapman somehow missed. Spoiler: one involves food. The other involves roasting your loved ones into the ground. Both are valid. What You'll Learn: The five love languages — and why knowing yours changes everythingWhy "receiving gifts" doesn't make you materialistic (it's about being thought of, not the thing)The sneaky reason most people give love in the language they want to receive — and why that backfiresHow Danna cracked the code with her Swiss husband and words of affirmationDanna's two unofficial additions to the list: feeding people and taking the pissWhy love languages aren't just for couples — they work for kids, friendships, all of it That's your 10 minutes. Final Thoughts: An Inside Look at Health Coaching - Joanna's Impressions

Final Thoughts: An Inside Look at Health Coaching - Joanna's impressions one month later What is it actually like to work with a health coach, especially if you’ve never done health coaching before? In this wrap-up episode, Joanna reflects on her experience working with Danna and shares what surprised her, what stuck, and what she would tell someone who is thinking about hiring a health coach. She talks about coming into coaching feeling overwhelmed by conflicting health advice and wanting personalized support that could help her figure out what mattered for her real life, not just what looked good on the internet. Joanna also shares the small but powerful changes that made the biggest difference, including the mindset shift that every day, and even every meal, can be a fresh start. No dramatic lifestyle overhaul required. No wellness fairy dust. Just practical, human-sized shifts that actually fit into family life. We also talk about finding the right coach-client chemistry, why food logging can be deeply annoying and annoyingly useful, and how tiny habits, like keeping “safety foods” on the table, can make healthy choices easier without turning dinner into a full-time negotiation with your children. If you’ve ever wondered whether health coaching is worth it, how a health coach can help, or what kind of results you can realistically expect from coaching, this episode gives you an honest behind-the-scenes look at the process. If you want to hear the all of the coaching sessions (the real-time coaching conversations between Danna and Joanna), listen on So Frickin’ Healthy. Bloated, Crampy & Dismissed by Your Doctor? IBS vs. IBD - So Frickin' Mini

Got 10 Minutes? IBS vs IBD — Your Gut Is Trying to Tell You Something You've heard of IBS. You've probably said "I have IBS" at some point — maybe even without a formal diagnosis. But do you know what it actually means? And do you know the difference between IBS and IBD? Because they are not the same thing, and mixing them up could mean missing something your body really needs you to catch. Danna breaks it down — what each one is, how to tell them apart, what the warning signs are, and why your gut symptoms might be a lot more connected to your food choices than you think. Spoiler: IBS is basically medicine's way of saying "we see you're suffering and we have absolutely no idea why." Welcome to being a woman with a gut. What You'll Learn: The actual difference between IBS (functional disorder, invisible on tests) and IBD (real inflammation, shows up in scans)The symptoms that should send you straight to a gastroenterologist — not just bloating, but blood, fever, and things that wake you up at nightHow untreated IBS could potentially set the stage for something more serious down the lineThe five foods functional medicine most commonly links to autoimmune gut conditions (gluten and dairy are just the beginning)Why you might react to a "healthy" food like carrots — and why that doesn't mean you're broken, it means you need to dig deeperWhy an elimination diet paired with a food diary is still one of the most powerful tools available That's your 10 minutes.
