(Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) In PART TWO of our conversation with intuitive medium Chauncey Ellis, things get personal. After spending Part One learning about Chauncey’s journey into mediumship, this time she turns the reading toward us — and we had no idea where it was going to go. Chauncey explains what she calls “piggybacking,” when messages can seemingly move between different people and loved ones. Connections begin coming through for both Frankie and Jess — butterflies that immediately make Frankie think of his late mother-in-law, Dixie; sunflowers, You Are My Sunshine and jewelry that connect with Jess’s family; and other little details that begin adding up. Then the reading turns toward Frankie’s dad, Ray — and his 88-year-old mom, who is currently in a rehab and care facility. Frankie opens up about watching his mom change, wondering whether she may already be connecting with loved ones who have passed, and feeling his dad’s presence more strongly as he navigates this chapter. One message from Chauncey keeps coming through: comfort. Keep her warm. Be present. And don’t let worrying about what will eventually happen rob you of the time you still have with her now. The conversation also turns toward Frankie’s son, Axel, and the importance of the time he still has with his grandma. It leads to an honest conversation about anticipatory grief — knowing what may eventually be coming while still trying to stay completely present for the moments happening right now. Then Chauncey says something Frankie wasn’t expecting. She hears his dad call him “son.” That hits immediately. It’s what Ray used to call Frankie. And then comes another message: “You’re doing the right thing.” Chauncey talks about the “juggle and the struggle” Frankie has been carrying and says his dad wants him to know that he sees it. She also picks up on a gold pinky ring — Frankie’s dad’s wedding ring, which Frankie now wears as a way of keeping him close. But one of the most unexpected moments comes through music. Before arriving at the studio, Chauncey says she inexplicably felt compelled to turn up music in her car — something completely out of character for how she normally prepares for a reading. Sitting in the studio, she begins sensing a strong connection between Frankie, his dad and music. That opens a story Frankie has carried most of his life. When Frankie was six or seven, his dad would dim the lights, have him close his eyes and introduce him to the old-time radio programs he’d grown up listening to before television — Dragnet, The Green Hornet, The Lone Ranger, Superman and more. Years later, Frankie knew he wanted to work in radio. It wasn’t until he was in his 30s that he realized his dad had planted that seed. Before Ray died, Frankie was able to tell him: “You’re the reason I got into radio.” And sitting in the room where Frankie and Jess now record their podcast, surrounded by old radios, cassette tapes and pieces of a career that began decades ago, Chauncey offers another way of looking at it: every time Frankie sits down behind a microphone, he may be connecting to his dad all over again. It’s a conversation about mediumship, grief, caregiving, signs, family, music, being present — and the ways the people we lose can continue to be woven into the lives we’re still living.
