We Farm Tourists - Charlie Sturgis

Charlie Sturgis came west from Chicago in 1973, skied Snowbird in blue jeans during a storm and pretty quickly figured out he wasn’t going back. What followed is intertwined with the story of Park City itself. Charlie worked at Wasatch Touring when backcountry ski gear was still being invented. He took over White Pine in the mid-1980s just as mountain biking was becoming a thing. He survived winters when there wasn’t snow until January, opened a shop on a Main Street so quiet you could practically roll a bowling ball down it, and learned that sometimes selling one pair of sunglasses on a rainy day counted as a win. Then came Mountain Trails Foundation. Charlie helped take an organization with very little money and approached it like a business: buy the equipment, pay people properly, understand what the work actually costs and build something sustainable. By the time he left, Mountain Trails had money in the bank, its own building, employees with real benefits and a trail system that had become inseparable from the identity of Park City. But this episode is really about something bigger. It’s about how communities get built. Not through some perfectly executed master plan, but by people who show up, solve the problem in front of them, take a few chances, bump into each other around town and occasionally decide, over a bottle of wine, to say yes to the next thing. This is a little Park City history, a little outdoor-industry history and a lot of Charlie. Maybe someday he’ll actually write The Book of Charlie. Until then, this is a pretty good chapter.

    $20,000 and 50 Powder Days!

Bob Peek came to Park City in 1981 for what was supposed to be a semester off. Then he got a job parking cars and shoveling sidewalks during Deer Valley's first season, started painting houses with his brother, made about $20,000 a year, skied roughly 50 days and figured he had things pretty well dialed. His dad wasn't so sure. Nearly 40 years later, that painting company is still here. Except Bob doesn't own it anymore. His son Jonas does. The funny part is Jonas wasn't waiting around for it. He grew up in Park City, left for college, became a software developer, worked at Amazon and startups and built the kind of career that looked pretty damn good on paper. Then he started wondering why it wasn't particularly fulfilling. Eventually, he started looking differently at the business he'd grown up around. This conversation is about a painting company, but not really. It's about leaving home so you can understand it. Building a business for one reason and watching the next generation find an entirely different reason to keep it. The difference between impressive work and meaningful work. Family businesses, Park City, community, powder days, expensive toys and the strange satisfaction of making something tangible happen. Bob built a business that let him live here. Jonas discovered it might let him build a life here. Turns out Dad may have been onto something. Ski In Sell Out with Max Doilney and Lauren Angerosa. Real estate is what we do. People are why we keep turning on the microphones.
