121: Battling the Stigma of Teen Addiction with Susan Burrowes

121: Battling the Stigma of Teen Addiction with Susan Burrowes

This is an important one folks - author and advocate Susan Burrowes sat with me over zoom to get real about teen addiction - what we can do to approach the issue without stigma and with empathy, the tough choices she had to make for her family, and what the other side looks like now. Substance abuse is something that touches so many families, and by speaking openly and compassionately about it, we can come together as a community to create real, lasting solutions. Susan is at the forefront of this conversation, and we're so grateful to have gotten to talk with her.
You can learn more about Susan's work, as well as pick up a copy of her book Off The Rails: One Family's Journey Through Teen Addiction, at her website: www.susanburrowes.com

119: The Benefits of Slowing Down and Focusing on What Matters- with Gen Padalecki

119: The Benefits of Slowing Down and Focusing on What Matters- with Gen Padalecki

This week I sat down with fellow Austinite Gen Padalecki to talk about all the things: managing anxiety, meditation, growing up in Montana, and so much more. Gen and I talked a lot about the significance of being in the right mindset during the times of our lives that feel hectic as well as how refreshing it can be to tune out external noise and unravel what we couldn't when life was moving too fast.
Since I know you'll want to keep up with Gen after hearing all the wisdom she has to offer, here's a link to everything she has to offer --> https://msha.ke/nowandgen/

118: Shifting the Narrative About Down Syndrome with Heather and Josh Avis

118: Shifting the Narrative About Down Syndrome with Heather and Josh Avis

Just in time for Down Syndrome Awareness Month, this week I had the privilege to sit down with two of my very good friends Heather and Josh Avis to discuss their work at The Lucky Few, all about encouraging families to reorient the way the view developmental differences such as Down syndrome. We really dig into the good, the bad, the painful of this work: how to make room for more representation, how to build a counter-narrative to the harmful ones we often see in our community, and how to seek to understand while at the same time, appreciating that you will never fully understand.
You can follow Josh and Heather's adventures over at The Lucky Few website: https://www.heatheravis.com and Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/theluckyfewofficial/

BONUS: Remembering Who You Are In a Season of Transition

BONUS: Remembering Who You Are In a Season of Transition

In the midst of transition, a world flipped upside down, SO many of us lose a sense of who we are.
You had a job that’s gone away, a relationship that’s ended, kids living in the house who’ve moved out — and now that this thing that was so much of who you were is gone, what does it mean for your identity? What of the thoughts and emotions that come with these shifting seas?
In last month’s Life Coaching course I walked my community through some of the insights and breakthroughs that have come my way in the regular live chats we have in our Facebook group. As much as the video quality isn’t the sharpest, I hope this can be a resource for anyone who’s in any way struggling to understand who they are in the midst of the sea changes that we’re all experiencing.

117: How My Mother's Book Shaped My Journey with Dr. Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins

117: How My Mother's Book Shaped My Journey with Dr. Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins

2020 marks the 40th Anniversary of poet and activist Audre Lorde’s powerful book The Cancer Journals, which details her experience coping with breast cancer and a radical mastectomy. Today we sit down with Audre Lorde’s daughter Dr. Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins (a doctor, writer, and breast cancer survivor) to discuss the lasting impact of her mother's book, as well as how major experiences such as illness can shape how parents and children view each other, and how healthcare providers function as activists in their own communities.
As of January 2020, there are more than 3.5 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.

Dave’s Interviews

I love Dave and how he interviews his guests. He asks questions and gives some commentary, but a lot of the speaking comes from the actual guest. I have had some qualms with Rachel’s interviews recently. For example, when Trent Shelton was on her podcast, Rachel did most of the talking. I stopped listening to her after that. However, Dave is a different story. He is welcoming and brings people that I do actually learn from onto the podcast. I love this new format and think it is so much better than the original format of this show. I love that he always has the guest introduce themselves in their own words and ends with a question about any advice that the listener can do today.

Authentic

So authentic & genuine. Very grateful to have someone going through the thick of it and sharing practical tips on how to get through it, and always pointing back to Jesus. Such a great podcast.
