The Eden Podcast is where we think again about the Bible on women and men. We start with a correct understanding of what happened in the Garden of Eden back in the beginning. Bruce C. E. Fleming is founder of the Tru316 Project (Tru316.com) and a former Academic Dean and Professor of Practical Theology. He presents the research of his wife, Dr. Joy Fleming, on Genesis 3:16 and how her insights help us understand the 7 Key Passages in the Bible on women and men.
1 Timothy 2:11-12 Correcting Wayward Women Overseers
The most important words in 1 Timothy 2:9-15 are in the main sentence in verses 11-12. Combined with verse 8, they tell Timothy the “who,” “how,” “what,” and “why” of his assignment in Ephesus. The Greek sentence starts in verse 11 and ends with verse 12. The first part gives the main idea in verse 11. The second part adds details to it in verse 12. The love of God for these women and for their ministry is Paul’s concern. His one command to Timothy is to let them learn! Retrain them so that they may return to their ministry and be fruitful.
1 Timothy 2:8-10 Disruptors in Ephesus!
Some of the men and women overseers in 1 Timothy 2:8-10 had gone astray. Paul gave two commands. I wish for disruptive men among the overseers to pray and prophesy correctly. He commanded "likewise" for the women. These verses were not for all men nor all women.
1 Timothy 2:1-7 Praying for Persecutors
Many commentators can’t understand how the first seven verses in 1 Timothy 2 fit into the structure of Paul’s letter. This is because they have missed the outline found in Paul's 3 sins. These verses are about Paul's second sin - that of being a persecutor of the church.
1 Timothy 1:1-17 Paul's Three Sins
What's going on in 1 Timothy 2:8-3:16? Paul's Three Sins are used to build the 3 Parts in this passage: (1) The Blasphemers. 1:18-20. (2) The Persecutors. 2:1-7. (3) The Disruptors. 2:8-3:16. Keep these 3 Parts in mind to keep these verses in their context.
