The Strange and Haunted Side of Missouri, Part One | Grave Talks CLASSIC

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Missouri is a land where history and the unexplained are deeply entwined. From the lingering legends of outlaws like Jesse James and his brother Frank James to the shadowed halls of Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, the state’s past refuses to stay buried. But Missouri’s paranormal reputation extends far beyond ghosts. Reports of Shadow People, unexplained UFO sightings, and the enduring legend of Jim the Wonder Dog add layers of mystery that defy easy explanation. These stories aren’t isolated—they form a pattern that suggests Missouri may be one of the most paranormally active regions in the country. In this episode of The Grave Talks, we’re joined by Jason Offutt, a longtime researcher of Missouri’s supernatural history. Having grown up in a haunted farmhouse himself, Jason brings both personal experience and years of investigation to the conversation. Together, we explore Missouri’s haunted past, the legends that continue to intrigue and terrify, and why the Show-Me State keeps showing us that the unknown is closer than we think. #TheGraveTalks #HauntedMissouri #ParanormalHistory #GhostLegends #ShadowPeople #UFOEncounters #LempMansion #AmericanHauntings #TrueParanormal #MidwestMysteries Love real ghost stories?

  • The Secret of Charisma

    The Secret of Charisma

Charismatic leaders can inspire devotion and give people a powerful sense of meaning. They can also make us vulnerable. This week, we explore how figures across history have gained followers by offering clarity in moments of uncertainty — and why that clarity can come at a cost. Historian Molly Worthen explains how to recognize the spell of charisma, and why questioning it is essential to a healthy society. Then, on Your Questions Answered, Antonio Pascual-Leone returns to respond to listeners' thoughts and questions about moving on after a breakup. Do you have personal stories about being drawn in by a charismatic leader? A question about how we can be swept up in the spell of a mesmerizing person? If you’d be willing to share your question or story with the Hidden Brain audience, please record a voice memo on your phone. Then, email the file to us at feedback@hiddenbrain.org. Use the subject line “charisma.” Thanks!  Our next stops on Hidden Brain's live tour are coming up in just a few weeks! Join Shankar in Philadelphia on March 21 or in New York City on March 25. More info and tickets are at hiddenbrain.org/tour.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

    Talking with the dead

“If only I could talk with them again.” It’s a common refrain for anyone who is grieving someone they love. Now, we can access technology like deadbots, or AI replicas of a lost loved one, to simulate those conversations, but at what cost? Maybe we’ve always had the capacity — within our own voices — to deepen conversations with the people we’re missing, even after they’re gone.  GUESTS: University of Cambridge assistant professors Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska and Tomasz Hollanek, writer and psycholinguist Julie Sedivy. If you or anyone you know is considering suicide or self-harm, or is anxious, depressed, upset, or needs to talk, there are people who want to help. MARIE CURIE: Dos Nobel.
