  • How to Find the Extraordinary in the Ordinary: Why Meaning Comes From Within with Henry Shukman #689

How to Find the Extraordinary in the Ordinary: Why Meaning Comes From Within with Henry Shukman #689

What happens when the boundary between you and the world around you dissolves? It’s something I experienced myself recently, and this week I sat down with Zen Master Henry Shukman to try and make sense of it. What results is a conversation that moves from the practicalities of a sitting practice, to the outer edges of what meditation can reveal about who we really are. Henry has been meditating for almost 40 years and is the guide behind The Way, the meditation app I use myself and have long recommended to you. He’s Director of the Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, an award-winning poet and the author of several books. This is his third appearance on the podcast, but our conversation this time goes somewhere we've never been before. We begin by talking about how meaning, purpose and happiness are found within us, not externally. Our culture may measure worth through outward achievement, but meditation can show us a deeper reality beneath the striving – a natural, open heart that doesn't need to prove itself. I share the deeply affecting experience I had at a retreat earlier this year – one that changed how I understand connection, identity and what it means to feel truly at peace. Henry helps unpack it, drawing on Buddhist teaching, his own blissful awakening at 19, and decades of guiding others through similar moments. We talk honestly about what this means for people living ordinary, busy lives, and why none of it requires stepping away from our responsibilities. Our conversation also touches on ageing and independence, prompted by reflections on my own parents and what they taught me about serenity in circumstances that looked far from peaceful. And in the second half, I invite Henry to answer some of your most-asked questions. Among many useful topics, we cover building a consistent meditation habit, fitting it into family life, coping with shame, cravings and addiction, and how to stay grounded in a difficult relationship. This episode moves effortlessly between the practical and the profound, and I think it will mean something different depending on where you are in your own life right now. But whether you're new to meditation or have been practising for years, rest assured there's a powerful message here for you. How to Know You’re on the Right Path | Katt Williams

What if the dark stretch you're in right now is proof your faith is about to pay off? Katt Williams, a comedian with 14 stand-up specials, sat down with Lewis to talk about leaving home at 13 and the moment around age 20 when drug dealing could turn $100 into $700. He asked God for another way to make a living, and comedy showed up. Door-to-door sales taught him that 300 no's buy 30 yeses, and he still tells a joke to himself 35 times in the mirror before any audience hears it. To him the crowd is never wrong, so every silence is feedback he can use. His years as a teenage missionary in Haiti come up too, where he watched starving families choose joy and pride. His memoir, “Nine Lives, No Wives, and 69 Concubines,” lays out his whole life so you can decide for yourself whether any of it was luck. His new podcast, According 2 Katt, is on the way to Netflix. You'll come away treating rejection as information and seeing every hurdle as a chance to jump higher. Nine Lives, No Wives, and 69 Concubines Katt's Instagram Katt's Facebook In this episode you will: Discover how Katt Williams walked away from a $700 drug hustle by asking God for another pathTreat every rejection as feedback so your self-worth never hinges on a yesTrust that your darkest season has a limit before the light breaks throughReframe obstacles like a hurdler who sees each one as a chance to jump higherWelcome opposition as proof you are on the right pathFor more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1996 More SOG episodes we think you’ll love! Can You Break a 10-Year Habit? The Protein & Weight Loss Link & Dark Chocolate

This week, we answer your questions on the science of habits and why willpower might not be the best way to make lasting changes. We also unpack the link between protein, fullness and weight loss, and why fibre and healthy fats matter too. Jay explores how to stop replaying past mistakes, let go of guilt, and move forward when an apology isn't enough. #412 ‒ The evolving science of cancer: emerging approaches to prevention and early detection, and the advances reshaping treatment | Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., Ph.D.

View the Show Notes Page for This Episode Become a Member to Receive Exclusive Content Sign Up to Receive Peter's Weekly Newsletter In this episode, Peter welcomes back Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a physician, oncologist, researcher, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies. Fifteen years after the book was first published, Sid released an updated edition. This conversation examines what has changed in our understanding of cancer—not only in how we treat it, but in how we think about its causes, prevention, detection, and biology. Sid explores the contributions of genetics, environmental exposures, random mutations, and inflammation to cancer risk, including the emerging role of hyperinsulinemia and metabolism. He discusses why detecting cancer early remains so difficult, particularly in pancreatic cancer, and how advances in immunotherapy, CAR T cell therapy, and targeted treatments such as KRAS inhibitors are changing the treatment landscape. The conversation then broadens beyond cancer to what Sid calls "regenerative failure"—the declining ability of tissues to repair and replenish themselves with age. Peter and Sid explore how this process may contribute to conditions such as osteoarthritis, and whether longevity should be approached less as the prevention of individual diseases and more as the preservation of regenerative capacity. Sid weighs in on the potential for chemoprevention, metabolic interventions, and AI to transform cancer prevention and treatment. Finally, they discuss what it would take to develop meaningful biomarkers of longevity that could ultimately help to extend human healthspan and lifespan. We discuss: What oncology has learned in the 15 years since The Emperor of All Maladies was published [2:45]; The contributions of genetic risk, bad luck, and inflammation to cancer [14:45]; The role of metabolism and hyperinsulinemia in cancer [31:00]; Osteoarthritis: the role of inflammation and regenerative stem cells [40:45]; How cancer escapes the immune system—the subtleties of neoantigens and immune checkpoints [49:45]; AI and the thymus as a predictor of longevity, and T cell aging and immune regeneration [57:15]; How CAR T cell therapy works and why solid tumors are harder to treat [1:04:00]; Targeting KRAS in pancreatic cancer [1:10:45]; The rise of colorectal cancer in younger adults [1:19:15]; How AI may transform drug discovery [1:23:00]; The future of cancer prevention: chemoprevention [1:33:15]; Challenging the current model of longevity—disease prevention versus targeting regenerative failure [1:37:45]; The need for a biomarker of longevity—comparing geroscience to atherosclerosis [1:50:30]; Clinical trials targeting cancer metabolism [1:56:00]; What Sid is currently writing about and a glimpse into his writing process [1:58:00]; and More.
