Beginning For Beginners with Hamish Blake & James van Cuylenburg

Have we ruined the art of being a beginner? 💌 To join our journaling club, with 9,900+ others, subscribe to my imperfect email - https://www.theimperfects.com.au/sign-up-to-our-newsletter/ With guest host Hamish Blake, we welcome back friend (family?) of the show James van Cuylenburg to expertly guide us through beginners’ mindset: what is it, how can we harness it, and what is the best way to model it for our kids? In a time where kids are wanting to be the GOAT of a sport they learnt about yesterday, we’re winding back the clock to reframe the anger and frustration of trying a new skill, and to learn just how great persistence is for our identity. James leads us through why we avoid discomfort, the role of dopamine and reward, and when to allow ourselves to quit something. This episode contains lots of helpful advice for anyone wanting to adopt a beginners’ mindset, and embrace ‘friction maxing’ as their next expedition into embracing discomfort. Get Curious Before You Judge Yourself

When Dora noticed herself getting frustrated during meditation, her first instinct was to fix the problem. But the more she judged herself for being distracted, the further she got from understanding what she needed. Eventually, she tried a different approach: instead of asking why she couldn't get it right, she asked what was underneath the distraction. The answer was simple and human: tiredness, anxiety, a full life. Next time you're caught in self-criticism, can you pause and ask what you were feeling before the judgment showed up? • Mykaela Powell | Coffee Is Still Coffee: Identity, Racism & Reinvention

    15 Oct

Mykaela Powell | Coffee Is Still Coffee: Identity, Racism & Reinvention

Episode Description Born in Sydney, raised in Suva, Fiji, and returning to Australia at 20, Mykaela Powell knows what it’s like to grow up between two places you call home. In this episode of Mana Mind StrongHer, we talk about her upbringing with a single mum, her experiences with racism and racial profiling, and how her childhood shaped her journey into media. Mykaela also opens up about her time in pageantry. The good, the bad, and being told at just 16 years old that she was too big, despite being a size 6. We talk about the pressure to look a certain way, the impact of other people’s words and what it means to find your confidence on your own terms. Our conversation also takes a personal turn as I share my own experience of migrating to Australia at five, facing racism and slowly losing my language while trying to fit in. One of Mykaela’s reflections sums up so much of what we discuss: “Coffee is still coffee, no matter how much milk you put in it.” We talk about belonging, identity, the parts of ourselves we sometimes lose trying to be accepted, and finding our way back. And Mykaela leaves us with a reminder worth hearing at any age: You can remake yourself at any time. Don’t limit yourself. A conversation about growing up, finding your voice and learning that you don’t have to change who you are to belong.
