    332. Rethinks: Learn Faster and Fail Smarter

“You learn nothing when you’re right.”  Effective communication isn’t about having all the answers. As Astro Teller knows, it’s about finding, and sometimes fumbling, your way through the questions. As Captain of Moonshots at X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, Teller embraces what he calls “a learning journey,” where being wrong isn’t the end, but an opportunity to discover something new. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Teller and Matt Abrahams discuss how embracing uncertainty drives innovation, why leaders should reward learning over outcomes, and why sometimes being wrong is the best way to learn. Takeaways: Being wrong is where learning happens. Treating failure as useful information rather than something to avoid helps you stay curious, test assumptions, and discover better paths forward. Reward the habits that lead to innovation, not just the outcomes. Focusing on curiosity, humility, and experimentation creates space for people to take meaningful risks and pursue ideas that may not work the first time. Activity: Find the failure faster. Choose one idea or project you’re confident about and identify the assumption most likely to prove you wrong. Design one small test that could challenge that assumption, then treat whatever you learn as progress.Episode Reference Links: Astro TellerAstro’s Book: Sacred CowsEp.237 Mistake It Till You Make It: Learn Faster and Fail SmarterEp.70 Ideas Fuel Innovation: Why Your First Ideas Aren't Always the BestEp.20 Question Your Questions: How to Spark Creativity in Your Communication   Connect: Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters: (00:00) - Introduction (01:33) - Defining a Moonshot (03:35) - Building a Learning Mindset (06:15) - Learning vs. Productivity (07:50) - Sharing Learning Across Teams (10:04) - Rewarding Habits, Not Outcomes (12:32) - Destigmatizing Failure (15:12) - Moonshots in Action (18:51) - Storytelling for Understanding (20:11) - Using Analogies Effectively (22:15) - Fostering Creativity Through Play (25:20) - Hiring for a Moonshot Culture (27:57) - The Moonshot Podcast (29:44) - The Final Three Questions (34:19) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. How AI Is Changing Innovation: Why Speed Alone Isn’t a Strategy

AI is making it faster and cheaper than ever to turn ideas into prototypes, products, and businesses—but that abundance creates new challenges for leaders. In episode 3 of a special four-part series on how AI is changing leadership, we look at the ways industry leaders are using AI to truly gain a competitive edge and innovate for the future. Cisco Chief Product Officer Jeetu Patel explains how AI is changing the pace and nature of innovation, why human judgment and taste become more important when everyone has access to the same tools, and how companies can use AI to tackle problems they couldn't have solved before. He also discusses the risks of AI agents, why organizations need new approaches to security and oversight, and how leaders can build a culture that embraces experimentation without sacrificing rigor or accountability.

Where Chinese Exports Are Gaining the Most Market Share

Chinese exports are surging worldwide—and particularly in emerging markets, says Trina Chen, co-head of Greater China Equity Research. In the Goldman Sachs Exchanges podcast, Chen also explains which sectors face the biggest challenge from growing Chinese competition. Key takeaways: In emerging markets, revenue growth for Chinese companies may be increasing 15-times that of the local market: Goldman Sachs Research’s analysis of more than 10 sectors across industries reveals Chinese product market share has probably reached 24% in emerging markets. Chinese exports are not always cheaper: The perception that Chinese exports are gaining market share because they are cheaper may be true when they first enter the market, but prices in some cases rise over time. Improvements in product quality, for example, can close the price gap between the Chinese export and the local product. Domestic stock prices tend to respond rapidly when companies lose market share: Market capitalization can shrink by 50% or more when Chinese competition causes a company’s revenue to fall 10%-15%. Why Great Teams Don’t Need to Like Each Other

What makes a great team? It might have less to do with whether colleagues like one another and more to do with whether they’re aligned on a shared purpose. Organizational psychologist and Wharton professor Adam Grant says leaders can build stronger connections at work, foster productive conflict, and create cultures where people feel empowered to speak up. He explains why task cohesion matters more than social cohesion, how to turn differences into a competitive advantage, and why leaders should reward people who challenge the status quo; and also shares practical ways to rethink onboarding, encourage candid feedback, and help employees connect their work to a meaningful mission. Grant is the author of the new book Vibe: The Secrets of Strong Connection in a Lonely World.
