  • Gautam Adani: The multiple mogul

    Gautam Adani: The multiple mogul

Gautam Adani’s businesses span almost every part of life in India. From energy to food, ports to mining, and drinks to weapons, the Adani group has widespread influence over millions of people day to day. From his early career as a diamond trader, Gautam built a reputation as always looking for the next opportunity. But as well as a huge pyramid of business interests, he also has cultural and political power, leading to a close relationship with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Simon and Zing chart Adani’s journey from 1960s Gujarat to opening his first port in the middle of nowhere, to owning 10 private jets as one of the richest billionaires on the planet. Good Bad Billionaire is the podcast that explores the lives of the super-rich and famous, tracking their wealth, philanthropy, business ethics, and success. There are leaders who made their money in Silicon Valley, on Wall Street and in high street fashion. From iconic celebrities and CEOs to titans of technology, the podcast unravels tales of fortune, power, economics, ambition and moral responsibility. Simon and Zing put their subjects to the test with a playful, totally unscientific scorecard — then hand the verdict over to you: are they good, bad, or simply billionaires? Here's how to contact the team: email goodbadbillionaire@bbc.com or send a text or WhatsApp to +1 (917) 686-1176. Eric Weinstein: The Secret Alien Programs Nobody Is Talking About

Are we racing towards a global crisis while leaders keep us in the dark? Eric Weinstein exposes the forces driving artificial intelligence, geopolitical collapse, and the illusion of modern reality. Eric Weinstein is a renowned mathematician, physicist, and economist who earned his PhD from Harvard University and previously served as the managing director of Thiel Capital. Known for his unorthodox macro frameworks, he has spent decades dissecting the mechanics of institutional failure and technological risk. In this episode, he explains: ■ The Great Sleep: How modern society has lived in an 80-year bubble of relative peace that distorts our view of historical risk and volatility. ■ Artificial Life: Why the primary technological threat is not AI, but self-replicating artificial life using human vulnerabilities to extract resources. ■ Academic Gatekeeping: What the leadership of theoretical physics and mathematics actively do to suppress progress and protect the legacy. ■ Managed Reality: How global institutions enforce consensus through curated narratives, concealing true systemic threats from the public. ■ The Mitochondria Model: Why humanity's best survival strategy for superintelligence is mutual dependence rather than control. The laws of the office revisited

Live event info and tickets here. If something is going wrong in your workplace, there's probably a law that explains why. Meetings always seem long, and never end early? There’s Parkinson’s Law, which says work expands to the time allotted, or, restated: meetings will always take up all the time blocked on Outlook calendars. Is your boss bad at managing? Check the Peter Principle, which says people are promoted to their level of incompetence. A good worker does not a good manager make. And yet … here we are. Once you hear these laws, and a few others, you start to spot them everywhere.  Today on the show, we picked a few of the most famous and powerful ‘laws of the office’ and tested them out on each other.  Pre-order the Planet Money book and get a free gift. / Subscribe to Planet Money+ Listen free: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts. The AI race to save American science and reshape medicine forever

Renee Wegrzyn spent her career building the future of American science — including ARPA-H, the White House agency created to accelerate health breakthroughs. Then the Trump administration showed her the door. Wegrzyn co-founded Transfyr to tackle what she calls one of the most overlooked issues in science: the magic hands problem. She joins Rapid Response to explain why fixing this unglamorous bottleneck is the prerequisite for everything AI promises to deliver in medicine, what the federal funding cuts are really costing science, and why she can feel the next Sputnik moment coming — even if she can’t quite name it yet. How AI Is Changing Talent, Not Just Tasks: Rethinking Where Human Judgment Matters Most

The decisions leaders must make about AI today go far beyond what platforms to invest in: AI is changing organizational culture and leadership for good. In episode 1 of a special four-part series on how AI is changing leadership, we look at how the technology is changing how people interact at work, the new culture it is creating, and how leaders can get smart about talent management and strategy in this rapidly advancing world. Paula Goldman, Salesforce’s chief ethical and humane use officer, argues there's currently a big opportunity to redesign work around the complementary strengths of humans and AI. She explains how AI could reshape entry-level jobs and the development of future leaders, why companies need to rethink internal mobility and talent development, and how executives can prepare their organizations for an AI-powered workforce without sacrificing accountability, creativity, or trust. Goldman is the author of Manage the Machine: How to Harness Human-AI Collaboration at Work.

Micro-finance: beyond friends, family, and fools

In this episode, Caroline Glackin and Michael Barbera discuss micro-finance, micro-loans, and human behavior. Microfinance, also called microcredit, is a type of banking service that is provided to unemployed or low-income individuals or groups who otherwise have no other access to financial services. While institutions participating in the area of microfinance are most often associated with lending, many offer additional services, including bank accounts and micro-insurance products, and provide financial and business education. Ultimately, the goal of microfinance is to give impoverished people an opportunity to become self-sufficient.   About Dr. Caroline Glackin Dr. Caroline Glackin is on the faculty at UNC Fayetteville State University where she serves as a Direct Selling Education Foundation Fellow and Sam Walton Fellow. She graduated Bryn Mawr College (A.B., economics), The Wharton School (MBA, entrepreneurial management), and the University of Delaware (Ph.D., Urban Affairs, and Public Policy). She publishes on access to microloan capital, the potential for behavioral economics to inform understanding of the borrowing process, and the role of savings as a proxy for credit history. Dr. Glackin published research on entrepreneurial finance courses and the range of pedagogies in entrepreneurial finance education. She co-authored texts with NFTE founder Steve Mariotti entitled Entrepreneurship, 4e and Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, 2e. Dr. Glackin was the Executive Director of a U.S. Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution and was the Director of the Delaware State University's Center for Enterprise Development. How AI Is Changing Innovation: Why Speed Alone Isn’t a Strategy

AI is making it faster and cheaper than ever to turn ideas into prototypes, products, and businesses—but that abundance creates new challenges for leaders. In episode 3 of a special four-part series on how AI is changing leadership, we look at the ways industry leaders are using AI to truly gain a competitive edge and innovate for the future. Cisco Chief Product Officer Jeetu Patel explains how AI is changing the pace and nature of innovation, why human judgment and taste become more important when everyone has access to the same tools, and how companies can use AI to tackle problems they couldn't have solved before. He also discusses the risks of AI agents, why organizations need new approaches to security and oversight, and how leaders can build a culture that embraces experimentation without sacrificing rigor or accountability.
