Best Tools for Gut Health & Weight Loss | Dr. Chris Thompson

Dr. Chris Thompson, MD, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of Interventional Gastroenterology at Mass General Brigham in Boston, and Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness, is a world-renowned expert on gastroenterology, metabolism, nutrition, and obesity medicine. He explains how your GI tract regulates hunger, fullness, and blood sugar, as well as the gut microbiome, metabolic health, and weight loss. We also discuss common GI tract issues and which particular tests or interventions are actually useful. We discuss both GLP-1 medications and non-GLP-1 approaches to weight loss. Given that gut health is vital to all the organs of the body, overall health, and longevity, our discussion ought to be of interest and practical value to everyone, including, of course, those struggling with gut health or weight loss challenges. • What are the side effects of weight loss drugs?

    24 Feb

What are the side effects of weight loss drugs?

Over 1.5million adults in the UK tried weight loss drugs in 2024-25. Many swear by them, but they have been associated with side effects including nausea and, in some cases, extremely painful gallstones. But what does the evidence actually tell us, and what is the wider impact on the way we view our bodies in society? James Gallagher is joined by Professor of Cardiometabolic Medicine at the University of Glasgow Naveed Sattar, Dr Beverley O’Hara, Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University, and Dr Margaret McCartney, resident Inside Health GP. They discuss what the evidence tells us about the potential known side effects of these weight loss drugs, and the potential impact their use has on our view of obesity as a society. We also hear from Sarah Le Brocq, who has struggled with obesity all her adult life and has been on these drugs for the past 2-3 years about her experiences. Margaret McCartney has no conflicts of interest to declare. Beverley O’Hara has no conflicts of interest to declare. She has 2 roles with the Association for the Study of Obesity (voluntary academic positions). Naveed Sattar has consulted for and/or received speaker honoraria from AbbVie, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, Carmot Therapeutics, Eli Lilly, Gan & Lee, GlaxoSmithKline, Hanmi Pharmaceuticals, Kailera, Mass Medicines, Menarini-Ricerche, Metsera, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Regeneron, Roche, UCB Pharma, and Verdiva Bio; and received grant support paid to his University from AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis, and Roche. How To Have More Meaningful & Intimate Relationships: A Fresh Approach That Really Works with Terry Real #679

If there were a health marker guaranteed to shape your happiness, your health and your children’s wellbeing, wouldn’t you want to optimise it? According to today’s guest there is: your relationships. And in this episode, the world-renowned couples’ therapist Terry Real reveals the one skill he believes matters more than any other for lasting love – while showing you exactly how to use it. Nicknamed ‘the turnaround guy’, Terry has spent decades helping couples who’ve tried it all find their way back to connection. His latest bestseller Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship, features a foreword from one-such happy customer, Bruce Springsteen. Terry’s unconventional yet hugely successful approach, Relational Life Therapy (RLT), has trained thousands of therapists worldwide. He believes a good therapist should take sides, and that lasting change often means helping someone come down from grandiosity, not just raising them up from shame. This is one of those conversations that blends big, new ideas with nuggets of advice you’ll be itching to put into practice. We discuss how expectations of love and romance have changed over the generations – and why so many of us are trying to build modern, intimate partnerships using skills we were never actually taught. And Terry explains why the real measure of a strong relationship isn’t how rarely you argue, but which of your ‘three selves’ you use to do it. He introduces the idea of the adaptive child, an old survival pattern that hijacks our behaviour the moment we feel threatened, and explains how learning to recognise it can transform the way we handle conflict. We also discuss the patriarchy and the need to move beyond it for humankind – but this is not about blaming men or women, rather showing how both can and must shift to help each other and the world. So, what is that one skill we need for lasting love? Terry calls it repair, and his bold idea is that it’s not a two-way conversation. When someone we love is hurt or upset with us, our job is not to explain ourselves, but to help them feel heard first. The ability to repair, more than the ability to swerve an argument altogether, is what determines relationship success – and, crucially, he reveals how to do it. It’s a simple reframe, and one that could change how you handle your very next disagreement.   Whether you are single, married, co-parenting, or navigating a difficult patch with someone you care about, this conversation is full of practical strategies you can start using today. I have a feeling you’ll want to share this episode, so everyone you love can do the same. 460. The psychology of 'good girl' syndrome

Many of us are conditioned to believe that being described as kind, nice, accommodating and generous are the key to overall happiness. But when these traits veer into Good Girl Syndrome, we can be left with a pathological need to please others, be hypervigilant towards others’ emotions, and ultimately suppress how we really feel. In this episode, we explore the origins of Good Girl Syndrome, understand the mental and physical cost of emotional suppression, and learn how to challenge this early social conditioning.  Watch on Netflix: HERE We unpack: Why women are particularly vulnerable to Good Girl Syndrome How trying to be liked shows up personally and professionally The link between a high score on the Silencing the Self Scale and depression Why it can be harder to break Good Girl habits as we get older The ways we can challenge Good Girl Syndrome traits Follow Jemma on Instagram: @jemmasbeg Follow the podcast on Instagram: @thatpsychologypodcast Subscribe on Substack: @thepsychologyofyour20s For business: psychologyofyour20s@gmail.com  Our favourite sources: https://reachlink.com/advice/general/good-girl-syndrome-why-compliance-destroys-mental-health/ https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/love-sex/relationships/a34642791/good-girl-complex/  https://www.researchgate.net/publication/362662346_Appendix_A_The_Silencing_the_Self_Scale  The Psychology of your 20s is not a substitute for professional mental health help.
