Why Strength Training in Midlife Isn't Optional — with Mary Ellen Loranger

My guest this week had a childhood nickname: Muscles. She wasn't the smallest kid on the block, but she could always outrun the boys and knock a softball clean out of the park. Somewhere along the way, that name got buried — and stayed that way for decades. Mary Ellen Loranger is a 56-year-old entrepreneur, author, and wellness leader who's spent the past eight years, alongside her husband Wayne, coaching thousands of women through nutrition, health, and lifestyle transformation. A former Ironman athlete, she's spent the last few years building Midlife Strong®, a strength training and mindset platform for women navigating midlife and menopause. I work with a lot of health coaches one-on-one, and right now they're going through a massive shift inside their industry because of GLP-1 medications — the wave of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. I think it's an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs, you included, to understand how to pivot when the market changes on you. That's exactly what's happening with Mary Ellen — she's had no choice but to pivot her own business right along with it. In this episode, we get into what that shift means for muscle, for metabolic health, and for anyone whose industry is changing under them. This one isn't just for people who care about fitness. It's for any woman in midlife who's been told to shrink back, slow down, or settle, and for any entrepreneur trying to figure out what to do when the ground shifts under their business.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why Mary Ellen's childhood nickname, "Muscles," disappeared for decades, and what finally brought it back to the surface What the GLP-1 boom is doing to muscle mass, and why protein and strength training matter more now than they used to The misconception about building muscle after 40 or 50 that the research says just isn't true What a "progressive overload" strength training program actually looks like, and how to start with nothing but a couple of dumbbells The simple three-part protocol Mary Ellen gives every client, whether they're on a GLP-1 or not Why she and her husband just invested in a gym instead of keeping all their eggs in one basket   SPECIAL GIFT FROM MARY ELLEN As her gift to Girlfriends, Mary Ellen is offering half of a four-week, customized progressive overload strength training plan through her Midlife Strong® app, for home or gym, at any level, for $25. She's also offering $50 off any nutrition plan — fat loss, calorie deficit, optimization, or GLP-1 nutrition plans. Alongside her husband, Wayne, she has spent the past eight years coaching thousands of people in nutrition, health, and lifestyle transformation while building a nationwide team of health coaches. A former endurance athlete who completed multiple Ironman competitions, she now focuses on strength training and empowering women to build muscle, confidence, and resilience. She founded Midlife Strong®, a platform that supports women navigating midlife and menopause through nutrition, strength training, and mindset coaching. Mary Ellen is also the bestselling author of Win Today: A Jersey Girl's Guide to Living Your Best Life and Called to More: Stepping Boldly into God's Purpose in Midlife – A 30-Day Devotional. Through her work, she encourages women to see midlife not as a slowdown, but as an opportunity to step into strength, purpose, and possibility.   READY TO STOP SHRINKING BACK IN YOUR BUSINESS?  This episode might have you thinking about where you've been shrinking back in your own business instead of stepping into strength. The Mother Line: The Real Block to Receiving — with Sabine O'Laughlin

My guest this week spent forty years studying death — first as a pathologist doing autopsies, later coaching people from inside her own pathology office. What she found in that work wasn't morbid. She found more life force in the morgue than she usually found walking around on an ordinary day, and that contradiction sent her looking for why. Sabine O'Laughlin calls what she found the mother line: the idea that everybody has one mother, whatever your relationship with her looks like, and that mother gave you exactly one thing — your life. Until you can accept that fully, Sabine says, you stay closed off to receiving — not just love, but money, health, and everything else too. This conversation is one I needed to hear myself, as someone who works in wealth consciousness all day and doesn't have a relationship with my own mother. This episode gets into where that shows up in your body, what giving too much can actually cost you, and what changes once you do this work.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: The three principles that hold family systems together — belonging, order, and the balance of give and receive — and what happens when any of them is out of balance Why being "a little bit dead" isn't dramatic — it's any place you learned to hold back to keep your caretakers happy, and how it shows up in your posture, your jaw, and your voice Why the giver, not the taker, is usually the one who kills a relationship, and how over-giving can be a form of control dressed up as generosity What it might mean if you've always felt like the black sheep of your family, and why that role usually isn't random Why Sabine says money is an energy, not a thing, and why nothing you buy will work until you can take in the source of your own wealth What changed for Sabine the day her mother died, and how it turned into four decades of studying death for a living   TAKE SABINE'S FREE ENERGY LEAK AUDIT Curious where your own energy might be leaking? Finding Your Fit as an Entrepreneur — with Lindsey Busfield

Lindsey Busfield's resume doesn't look like it belongs to one person. Starbucks barista. English teacher. Auditor of Amish chicken barns. Now she's the vice president of one of the country's top legal marketing firms. None of it was the plan. For years, Lindsey figured she'd eventually run her own business, the same way her entrepreneurial parents had. Then a two-day aptitude test told her something different: she wasn't built to be the visionary founder. She was built to be the expert, the organizer, the person who makes the pieces actually run. In this episode, Lindsey and I talk about what shifted once she stopped fighting that, how she landed in SEO for personal injury lawyers almost by accident, and why she built her business, and her team's schedule, around time with her two young daughters instead of just a bigger bank account. We also break down what SEO actually is, in plain language, and why it matters even more now that AI is part of how people search.     WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why a philosophy degree really only points toward two career paths, and how the less obvious one led Lindsey to Starbucks What auditing Amish chicken barns taught her about process and project management, and why that skill kept following her from job to job What a two-day aptitude test at Johnson O'Connor revealed about the gap between the entrepreneur Lindsey assumed she'd become and who she actually is The real difference between being a subject matter expert and being a visionary founder, and why knowing which one you are changes how you build What SEO actually is, explained simply, and why AI search has changed what it takes for a business to get found Why Lindsey designed her agency's culture, and her own schedule, around time freedom instead of chasing a bigger bank account alone     RESOURCES MENTIONED Johnson O'Connor aptitude testing — the two-day assessment Lindsey credits with changing the direction of her career Lindsey's book, How Personal Injury Lawyers Get Leads: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H1NB4ZDK Optimize My Firm — https://optimizemyfirm.com/ Personal Injury Marketing Minute podcast, hosted by Lindsey     CONNECT WITH LINDSEY BUSFIELD Website: Optimize My Firm — https://optimizemyfirm.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindsey-busfield/ Optimize My Firm on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/optimizemyfirm/ Her book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H1NB4ZDK     ABOUT LINDSEY BUSFIELD Lindsey Busfield is the vice president of Optimize My Firm, one of the nation's leading legal marketing firms. Certainty Is a Skill (And You Can Learn It)

Most of us think certainty means confidence — that bold, "everything always works out for me" kind of energy. It doesn't. Confidence is built on evidence: you earn it by looking back at what you've already proven. Certainty is different. It's a deep inner knowing you can access before you have any proof at all, and it's one of the most important skills for building a genuinely wealthy life — not just a life with more money in it, but one where you trust your next move even when you can't yet explain why. In this solo episode, I break down the real difference between certainty and confidence, why we mix the two up, and how you can start practicing certainty as an actual skill — starting this week.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: What an Italian vineyard taught me about digging deeper roots instead of panicking when things feel scarce My jeans story — what it feels like when your intuition is right, even when it makes no sense at the time How Jamie Kern Lima built a billion-dollar company by trusting her own knowing over an investor's "no" Why your imagination is either your greatest asset or your biggest liability The negativity bias — and how to work with it instead of against it Two questions to ask yourself this week to start practicing certainty right now   RESOURCES MENTIONED  Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima (referenced in the episode) — https://amzn.to/4c5mk64   READY TO TRUST YOURSELF? Joy as a Default Setting — with Roberta Ravella, Founder of The Joy Experiment

Roberta Ravella spent 25 years in mortgage origination. She was good at it. She was also, by her own account, a classic case of burnout. She tried coaching. She tried marketing. She even opened an AI business with a friend. Two months in, something in her said no, and she couldn't push past it the way she used to. So she stopped. Her mentor sent her on a six-week break with one rule: shut it all off. What Roberta found on the other side of that break is what she now calls The Joy Experiment. This conversation is about what it took to get there, and what her mornings look like now that she's arrived.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN  Why Roberta calls her old business model "golden bricks" she couldn't build anything out of The real difference between a priority and an energetic value, and why mixing them up keeps you stuck How years of chronic stomach pain led Roberta to nervous system work she didn't know she needed Why she says "your definition of easy needs to grow up," and what that looks like in practice Why joy doesn't have to be something you earn at the end of a long to-do list   ROBERTA'S FREE GIFT FOR GAME ON GIRLFRIEND® LISTENERS Roberta's book, Open for Business: How To Build A Business You Love Without The Hustle And Grind, will be free on Kindle for 10 days starting on this episode's publish date of August 11, 2026. Why You Struggle to Receive Money (Even When You're Good at Making It)

Most of us don't actually have trouble making money. It's the keeping of it — the receiving of it — that's the problem. If you added up how much money has passed through your hands over your lifetime, the number would probably surprise you. It comes in, you manage it, you pay bills, and then it's "gone," so you never really see how much you're circulating. That's not a money-making problem. That's a receiving problem, and most women were never taught the skill. In this solo episode, I break down what receiving actually is, why we were never taught to do it, and how you can start practicing it today.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN The friendship bracelet story that reveals exactly when we're taught to stop receiving Why women in particular tend to under-apply for things they're qualified for — and where that pattern comes from Why your natural gifts were meant to become your living, not something you give away for free What a $40,000 handbag taught me about the difference between having money and actually receiving it Where you're already wealthy right now, even before more money shows up Small daily practices that start building your capacity to receive   RESOURCES MENTIONED Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg    READY TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS? Real Estate Investing One Step at a Time — with Abi Horton, Founder of Aros

For years, Abi Horton believed real estate investing wasn't for her. Not enough money, not enough experience, not the right background. So she stayed on the sidelines and told herself it was something for later. Then things shifted, not through one big moment, but through a lot of small, unplanned ones. Voice acting taught her she was capable of running a business. That confidence opened a door she hadn't been looking for, and stepping through it eventually led to Aros, a real estate investment technology company built around mid-term rentals. Abi is candid about what that process actually looked like- no highlight reel, no shortcut. If you've ever told yourself you need more money, more time, or more expertise before you can start, this conversation is for you.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN The mindset block that kept Abi out of real estate investing for years, and what it actually took to move past it How she used free resources like Facebook groups and networking events to educate herself, without an insider connection Why she calls building a business "one foot in front of the other," and why that mindset matters more than a single lightbulb moment What mid-term rentals actually are, and who needs this kind of housing (traveling nurses, insurance displacement, workers relocating for big projects) How a gap in the relocation housing market led her to build Aros Her advice for someone starting from zero who feels like they need everything figured out before they begin   ABI'S FREE GIFT FOR GAME ON GIRLFRIEND® LISTENERS Top Tips for Managing Your Mid-Term Rental Out of State. After building relationships with insurance relocation companies for her own rentals, she recognized how fragmented the temporary housing process was and founded Aros to create a more direct, relationship-driven solution for mid-term housing. She helps landlords build sustainable businesses beyond traditional listing platforms and speaks openly about entrepreneurship, mental resilience, and the realities of building a business from the ground up.   READY TO BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE? 342. The Energy Drains for Women Entrepreneurs No One Warns You About

Some days you do everything right, and by 3 p.m. you're still completely wiped out. That's not burnout from working too hard. It's the specific exhaustion of doing tasks that were never yours to carry in the first place. In this solo episode, I walk through the exact questions I ask my own clients when they tell me they should be further along by now, or that something feels harder for them than it looks for everyone else online. Grab a journal, because I want you to actually answer these questions as you listen.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN  The exact question to ask when a task drains you, even when you're good at it Why forcing yourself into what feels unnatural costs you more than it earns you How to tell when you're performing instead of being yourself, and why it drains more than just an evening Why someone else's strengths were never meant to be the yardstick for yours How to spot the parts of your business where you already work with real clarity The story of a doctor who walked away days before the finish line, and why her decision applies to your business too   RESOURCES MENTIONED  Good Energy by Casey Means: https://amzn.to/4u1AHz2   READY TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS?
