Raising Vs. Birthing: Will the Real Mom Please Stand Up!

What happens when loving a child, raising a child, and being recognized as that child’s mother don’t all belong to the same person? This week, Janine and Nicole catch up on life, exhaustion, upcoming surgery, birthdays—and why sometimes getting a little rest feels like an accomplishment all by itself. The conversation also opens the door to a future discussion about Janine’s journey with fibroids and the importance of women advocating for their health. Then, in What’s on Our Timeline?, the ladies unpack a viral video involving a stepmother confronting her young stepson after he asks to spend Mother’s Day with his biological mother. What begins as a conversation about appreciation quickly becomes something much deeper: abandonment, blended-family dynamics, privacy, a child’s right to love both a biological parent and a stepparent, and whether adults sometimes expect children to meet emotional needs they were never responsible for carrying. In Letters From Our Listeners, a stepmother who has helped raise her husband’s daughter since she was three admits she's beginning to resent watching the teenager continue to seek love and approval from an inconsistent biological mother. After years of showing up, sacrificing and caring for her stepdaughter, she asks a difficult question: Is she wrong for wanting to be seen? Janine and Nicole have thoughts—and, as usual, they don't completely agree on how much a stepparent should sacrifice. Finally, the Motivational Moment is for everyone who has ever quietly poured into others without receiving the recognition they deserve: being overlooked doesn't make you unimportant, and your consistency, sacrifice and presence matter more than you may ever know. Because sometimes the deepest conversations aren't about choosing sides. They're about remembering who needs protecting most—and understanding that love isn't a competition. This Isn't What I Signed Up For

This week on *Oh That’s Deep: Black Women Conversations*, Janine and Nicole step into an uncomfortable but necessary conversation about motherhood, regret, identity, and the pressure women—especially Black women—can feel to simply be strong and make it work. First, the ladies catch up on life, from Nicole’s adventures at sea to Janine’s ongoing health journey—and a little disagreement over whether Janine should be anywhere near Nicole’s upcoming bachelorette festivities. Then, **What’s on Our Timeline?** takes the conversation much deeper. A mother admits that although she loves her children, if she could do it all over again, she wouldn’t become a mother. Can you love your children and still regret motherhood? Janine and Nicole unpack pregnancy, postpartum emotions, identity, sacrifice, the expectations placed on Black women, and why we need to make room for women to say what they’re really feeling—even when it makes us uncomfortable. In **Letters From Our Listeners**, Adam writes in with an emotional dilemma of his own. He believes his wife regrets becoming a mother—and he fears their children are beginning to feel her emotional distance. What do you do when you love your spouse, love your children, and aren't sure everyone wants the same life anymore? Janine and Nicole weigh counseling, building a stronger village, bringing in additional support, protecting the marriage and, above all, making sure the children have what they need. Finally, in the **Motivational Moment**, the words of Zora Neale Hurston offer the perfect reflection for this conversation: *“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”* Sometimes the answers about who we are—and who we want to become—don't arrive when we expect them to. It’s honest. It’s complicated. It may even make you uncomfortable. But that’s exactly why we need to talk about it. Until we meet again… **Pray. Work. Slay. And show off your melanated excellence.** Find more shows like this on the Mean Ole Lion app. Follow, rate, comment, and share.

    "Monogamish"

After catching up on a week filled with unexpected twists—from work frustrations to car mishaps—Janine and Nicole dive into a relationship trend that's taking over social media: "monogamish." In this week's What's on Our Timeline?, the ladies unpack the growing conversation around relationships that blur the lines between monogamy and open partnerships. Is "monogamish" simply honesty replacing secrecy, or is it just infidelity with better branding? Janine and Nicole explore the importance of communication, boundaries, emotional intimacy, and whether some relationship arrangements create more complications than clarity. The conversation takes an even deeper turn when they read a heartfelt listener letter from a woman questioning whether the relationship structure she agreed to is slowly costing her the love—and the sense of self—she's worked so hard to build. As her partner develops an emotional connection with someone outside of their relationship, the hosts offer candid, compassionate advice about self-worth, intuition, healthy boundaries, and recognizing when compromise becomes self-abandonment. Drawing from Nicole's perspective as an OB/GYN and Janine's faith-centered approach to relationships, this episode tackles everything from emotional attachment and trust to sexual health, commitment, and the courage it takes to choose yourself. The episode closes with a powerful Motivational Moment from James Baldwin: "Love takes off the mask that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within." It's a reminder that real love requires honesty, vulnerability, and the courage to show up as your authentic self—even when the truth is uncomfortable. Until next time... Pray. Work. Slay.
