From Addiction to Self-Acceptance: David Deane Haskell’s Story

In this episode, Kelly and Ian are joined by author David Deane Haskell for a powerful conversation about addiction, childhood trauma, codependency and the work that can begin once the alcohol is gone. David lost his mum at just four years old and later discovered she had taken her own life. He shares how those early experiences shaped the way he saw himself and contributed to a decades-long struggle with alcohol, drugs and unhealthy relationships. But getting sober was only the beginning. David talks openly about discovering codependency, learning to understand the beliefs and behaviours he'd carried from childhood, and how inner-child work became an important part of his recovery. We also explore why removing alcohol can sometimes uncover things we've spent years avoiding, how our childhood experiences can continue to influence us as adults, and why recovery can be about much more than simply not drinking. David is the author of Wounded Angels, a memoir exploring trauma, grief, addiction, recovery and finding your authentic voice. A fascinating conversation about what can sit underneath addiction — and the journey of discovering who you are without it. 📗Wounded Angels  📕Support journal   🌐More about David- To find out more about the Alcohol Uncensored community, visit:🌐 Website: alcoholuncensored.co.uk📧 Email: team@alcoholuncensored.co.uk Credits:Podcast editing Anna CareweMusic by Seren 4 Ever

This week we're joined by Alcohol Uncensored community member Niall Davidson, who shares his honest and often humorous journey from decades of binge drinking and gambling to finding genuine freedom, purpose and peace. Growing up believing alcohol gave him confidence, Niall spent years chasing weekends, blackouts and the next drink. It wasn't until his forties that he finally questioned whether alcohol was adding anything to his life at all. Now, three years alcohol-free, Niall has channelled that same energy into writing his first book, I've Got a Tip, Lads: Winning Gamblers Lose Too - memoir exploring how gambling consumed his life, even during the years he appeared to be winning. His story is a reminder that when we stop chasing temporary escapes, we create space for purpose, creativity and a life we never imagined possible. Whether you're sober curious, questioning your relationship with alcohol, or already living alcohol-free, this episode is an honest reminder that life doesn't get smaller without alcohol - it gets bigger. 🎧 Alcohol Uncensored is the podcast for anyone questioning their relationship with alcohol, exploring an alcohol-free lifestyle, or looking for honest conversations about the realities - and rewards - of living without it. The Contemplation Stage

There comes a point when many of us start asking ourselves the same question: "Is alcohol really giving me more than it's taking?"The contemplation stage isn't about deciding to stop drinking overnight. It's about becoming honest with yourself. It's the stage where you begin to recognise the growing gap between the life you want and the life alcohol is creating - but still find yourself stuck in the cycle. In this episode of Alcohol Uncensored, we share what contemplation looked like for us. We talk about the pros and cons lists we wrote, the promises we made to ourselves, why insight alone wasn't enough to create change, and what eventually helped us move from simply thinking about change to taking action. If you've ever found yourself saying, "I know I need to do something... I'm just not ready yet," this conversation is for you. Whether you're sober curious, taking a break from alcohol, or supporting someone who is questioning their relationship with drinking, we hope this episode reminds you that change often begins long before your last drink. It begins with one honest conversation - usually the one you have with yourself. 🎙️ Subscribe to Alcohol Uncensored, and if you enjoy the episode, we'd really appreciate you leaving a review. It helps more people discover that an alcohol-free life can be about so much more than simply giving something up. 🎧 Alcohol Uncensored is the podcast for anyone questioning their relationship with alcohol, exploring an alcohol-free lifestyle, or looking for honest conversations about the realities - and rewards - of living without it.  Credits:Music by Seren 4 EverAlcohol Uncensored – support, connection, daily Zooms, and a community of people exploring life beyond alcohol. Stuart Reeves on Purpose, Volunteering & Joining the Board of Alcohol Change UK

This week, Ian has been let loose on his own as he's joined by one of Alcohol Uncensored's Zoom hosts and valued community members, Stuart Reeves. What starts as a conversation about Stuart's alcohol-free journey soon becomes a wider discussion about purpose, personal growth, and how removing alcohol opened doors he never imagined. Stuart shares how life has changed since stopping drinking—from improvements in his physical and mental wellbeing, to therapy, finding work that better aligns with his values, and discovering the importance of giving back. Along the way, he also talks about an exciting new chapter after recently joining the Board of Directors at Alcohol Change UK, one of the UK's leading alcohol charities. Together, Ian and Stuart explore why lived experience matters, how volunteering can bring a renewed sense of purpose, and why an alcohol-free life can become about so much more than simply not drinking. Whether you're sober curious, alcohol-free, supporting someone else, or simply interested in living a healthier, more intentional life, this is an honest and inspiring conversation about the opportunities that can emerge when alcohol is no longer at the centre of your story. 🎙️ Subscribe to Alcohol Uncensored, and if you enjoy the episode, we'd really appreciate you leaving a review.
