UC 432: The Power of the Pause: Reframing Fear, Busyness and Self-Belief with Karen Bartholomew

In this episode, Cyndi and Kim are joined by women’s empowerment coach Karen Bartholomew, creator of the Pause Method. Karen shares how intentional reflection and conscious pauses can help women and leaders gain clarity, break free from limiting beliefs, and take aligned action. Karen discusses her personal journey from single motherhood and an unfulfilling career to becoming a life coach and mentor to leaders. Through her retreats and coaching programs, she now helps women reconnect with themselves, challenge old narratives, and create more purposeful and fulfilling lives. The conversation explores how fear is often rooted in past experiences and subconscious stories that no longer serve us. Karen explains how identifying these patterns can help people move beyond self-imposed limitations. Together, the hosts reflect on the modern culture of busyness and how overwhelm can sometimes stem from learned patterns or beliefs about productivity and self-worth. Karen introduces her P.A.U.S.E. framework, which guides individuals through recognising patterns, accepting themselves without judgment, reframing limiting beliefs, and embodying a more expansive mindset. The discussion also highlights the importance of self-care, mindfulness, and creating safe spaces for women to rediscover joy, rebuild confidence, and explore personal growth. Throughout the episode, the conversation touches on societal shifts, parenting, childhood narratives, and the power of breathwork and journaling as practical tools for emotional awareness and resilience. Karen also shares insights from her retreats and upcoming programs, which support women in developing new habits and perspectives over a structured 90-day journey. This inspiring conversation reminds us that sometimes the most powerful step forward begins with simply taking a pause. Topics Covered The Pause Method and how intentional pauses can create clarity and better decision-making Karen Bartholomew’s personal journey from single motherhood to becoming a life coach and mentor Understanding the root causes of fear and how past experiences shape present beliefs Recognising patterns of busyness and overwhelm and how they impact wellbeing The importance of self-awareness, reflection, and mindfulness in personal growth How reframing limiting beliefs can lead to greater confidence and empowerment The P.A.U.S.E. framework for recognising patterns, shifting mindset, and expanding personal potential The role of self-care and creating space for reflection, particularly for women in leadership roles Exploring childhood narratives and how they can influence adult behaviour and beliefs Teaching mindfulness and emotional regulation through simple tools like breathwork and journaling The value of retreats and safe spaces for women to reconnect with themselves Societal shifts and the growing importance of intentional living and personal alignment About Karen Bartholomew Karen Bartholomew is a life coach and women’s empowerment mentor, and the creator of the Pause Method. She helps women and leaders gain clarity, overcome limiting beliefs, and create meaningful change through reflection, mindfulness, and intentional action. Through her coaching, retreats, and programs, Karen supports people to reconnect with themselves and build more aligned and fulfilling lives. Quotes I was exhausted all the time, something had to change. The Pause Method helps women get freedom from their past. There can be a lot of fear of the unknown but we can go back and look at where the fear is coming from and then unravel it. We manipulate our world to get what we want. What story are you telling yourself right now and is it a truth? You don’t know until you don’t. Awareness of self is the first step. The space between the trigger and the response is what we explore. The Universe gives us everything we ask for. Horrible moments can set us up for something better. What you resist gets reinforced. In uncertainty there is pure possibility. Embody is a practice not a thought. We have to pause and create a new narrative. The Universe will bring you everything you need to show you the unhealed parts of you. I only have control of my own reaction. If only we could response rather than react. The best way to change a relationship is to do the work. Meet people where they are at. When you give compassion and empathy there is a more real connection. Nothing is good or bad – it is the thinking that makes it so. PAUSE – P – Pattern recognition, A – Acknowledge and Accept, U – Unwind and untangle, S – Shift and Structure, E – Embody and expand Where to find Karen Website: www.karenbartholomew.com Instagram: @karenbartholomew Cyndi O’Meara Links Website – https://thenutrition.academy/ Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/cyndiomeara/ https://www.instagram.com/thenutrition_academy/ Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/cyndi.lovetto https://www.facebook.com/thechnutritionacademy Kim Morrison Links Website – https://www.kimmorrison.com/ Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/kimmorrison28/ https://www.instagram.com/twenty.8.essential/ Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/KimMorrisonTraining https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials

Quotes I didn’t want to learn about nutrition if it didn’t involve whole foods. It felt like mooshing problems around on the surface which didn’t go deeper into the body. I’m floored at the connection between food nutrition and our mental health. It’s really about how to return to wellness. We are increasingly disconnected from what’s real and right for us. UC 428: The Wild Fix Nature, Wild Swimming & Finding Joy with Anna Deacon

In this uplifting and nature-filled episode, Cyndi and Kim chat with Anna Deacon, photographer, author, and passionate advocate for wild swimming, about her upcoming solo book, The Wild Fix: Scotland. Anna shares how connecting with nature can transform our mental and physical health, from the soothing power of birdsong to the invigorating challenge of cold-water immersion. The conversation flows from Anna’s personal journey, transitioning from a career in the music industry to writing and photographing stories of wild swimmers, to her deep connection with Scotland’s landscapes. She also reveals fascinating research for her book, including the science of negative ions, the gut health benefits of soil-based probiotics, and the ancient sauna culture of the Shetland Islands. Alongside personal stories of joy, grief, and resilience, Anna, Cyndi, and Kim explore how nature offers “glimmers”—small moments of beauty and positivity that help us feel grounded, inspired, and alive. Topics Covered How wild swimming supports mental health, community, and resilience The science behind why being in nature feels so good Links between birdsong, gut health, and stress reduction The role of trees and natural spaces in navigating grief and joy Scotland’s ancient sauna culture and Anna’s family history in the Shetland Islands Why embracing discomfort—whether in cold water or hot sun—can be transformative How to find and collect “glimmers” in your daily life Anna’s favourite nature rituals and how they keep her creative and inspired About Anna Deacon: Anna Deacon is an Edinburgh-based photographer, writer, and nature advocate whose work celebrates the healing power of the outdoors. She has co-authored several books, including Taking the Plunge and For the Love of Trees, and her upcoming solo project The Wild Fix: Scotland explores the intersection of nature, well-being, and the four elements—air, fire, water, and earth. Her photography and writing have been featured in major media outlets, and her projects have inspired a growing movement of wild swimmers and nature lovers across the UK and beyond. Quotes I am a story teller and I love telling people’s stories. Love the feeling of being outdoors and the feeling of cold water. There is lots of science around cold water – if you can do it – do it anywhere. It is good to push the body to extremes. Ice baths do not have the same effect as wild swimming as every day it is different. Getting into cold water is a very mindful practice. Swimming into the sunrise is the most magical experience. When you are grieving go to nature to feel connection. You always feel better when you have been outside, most people get that. There’s a lot to be said for getting hands dirty in soil and touching trees. We live in a very sterilised world. I’m not afraid to reinvent myself. There is something beautiful in creating the opposite of triggers can only be achieved in nature.
