Perimenopause & Exercise: Why Your Old Routine May Not Be Working Anymore - Trainer Lindsey

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 🤔Have you ever wondered why the diet and exercise routines that worked in your 20s and 30s don't seem to deliver the same results in your 40s? You're still putting in the effort, but your body feels different. Maybe you're noticing changes in body composition, energy, strength, or recovery—and you're wondering whether it's time to change your approach. In this episode, we're exploring the connection between perimenopause, nutrition, exercise, and recovery and why understanding your changing body can help you make more informed decisions about your health. Because the goal isn't to punish yourself with harder workouts or more restrictive eating. It's to find a sustainable approach that supports your body through this season of life and beyond. In this episode, we discuss: How perimenopause can influence the way your body responds to nutrition and exerciseWhy the routines that worked in your 20s and 30s may need to evolve in your 40sWhat women should understand about exercise and changing hormonesWhy strength training matters as women ageHow to balance cardiovascular exercise and resistance trainingWhat a realistic weekly workout routine can look likeWhy recovery deserves a place in your fitness planHow to approach nutrition and exercise without falling into the all-or-nothing trapHow to make sustainable adjustments that support your long-term health and fitness goalsThe Bigger PicturePerimenopause can bring new questions about your body, but it doesn't mean your best years of strength, fitness, and vitality are behind you. It may simply be time to reassess your approach. Instead of asking, "How can I work harder?" consider asking: "What does my body need from me in this season of life?" That might mean prioritizing strength training, finding a better balance between cardio and recovery, revisiting your nutrition, or making your routine more realistic for your current schedule and energy. You don't need a perfect workout plan. You need a sustainable one that helps you build strength, support your health, and continue doing the things you love. Because this is Direction Not Perfection: learning to work with your body, not against it, one step at a time. 📌Connect with Lindsey Matthews: MoxieByLindsey.com: http://www.moxiebylindsey.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trainerlindsey/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/@trainerlindsey YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@trainerlindsey TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@trainerlindsey Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nourish-strengthen-with-trainer-lindsey/id1692560051 Presale link for Lindsey’s book: http://www.moxiebylindsey.com/books 📌Connect with Lindsey House:    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1    • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles  💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Doing All the Things, But Still Not Feeling Better? You May Be in Health Debt - with Bria Gadd

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 💛🌟Be More in Your Life And NOT Just Less On a Scale🌟💛 From Health Debt to Health Wealth: 5 Steps to Thrive Through Perimenopause Our guest walks us through five practical steps designed to help you stop simply reacting to health problems and start intentionally investing in your future health. In this episode, we explore: What health debt actually means and how you may be carrying it without realizing itWhy doing "all the things" doesn't necessarily mean you're doing the right things for your bodyHow to calculate your health net worth by taking an honest inventory of your symptoms and areas of health that need attentionLooking beyond weight to areas like gut health, perimenopause symptoms, joint pain, energy, sleep, stress, and moreHow to identify your health income vs. health expensesWhere you're spending your energy—and what is actually giving energy backHow to make the most of the 24 hours we all have each dayWhat it means to aggressively start paying down your health debtHow to move from simply managing your health to investing in your future healthThe 5-Step Framework: 1. Calculate Your Health Net Worth Start by taking an honest inventory. 👉What symptoms are you experiencing? 👉What areas of your health feel good? 👉Where are you struggling? Think about gut health, energy, sleep, hormones, perimenopause symptoms, joint pain, strength, stress, mental health, nutrition, and anything else that impacts how you feel and function. 2. Look at Your Health Income & Expenses 👉Where are you spending your energy? 👉What drains you? 👉What gives you energy back? This can be a powerful exercise because sometimes we're spending enormous amounts of energy on things that aren't actually improving our health—or our lives. 3. Pay Down Your Health Debt Once you know where the debt is, you can start addressing it. The goal isn't to fix everything at once. It's to identify the areas that are creating the biggest problems and start strategically working on those. 4. Create Time for Your Health We all have the same 24 hours. The question isn't necessarily, "How do I find more time?" It's: "How can I use the time I have more intentionally?" What could you change, simplify, delegate, eliminate, or prioritize so you have some capacity to invest in your health? 5. Build Your Health Wealth Once you've started paying down the debt, the goal isn't to stop. Now you get to invest. 🌟Strength training. 🌟Nourishing your body. 🌟Prioritizing sleep. 🌟Building relationships. 🌟Managing stress. Your Takeaway If you want to try this exercise, grab a piece of paper and create four sections: My Health Net Worth What is working well? My Health Debt What symptoms, habits, or areas of health need attention? My Health Expenses Where am I spending my energy, time, and resources? My Health Investments What can I start doing today that will benefit my future self? You may be surprised by what you discover. 📌Connect with Bria Gadd:   • Website: https://www.briatheperiodwhisperer.com/    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@UCGkVoE18A2ztLleZzW2wGaA    • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bria_period_whisperer/ 📌Connect with Lindsey House:    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Understanding Insulin Resistance: What Could Be Driving Your Blood Sugar? -Dr. Jason Shumard

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 👉If you've ever been told you have insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes and thought, "But WHY is this happening?", this conversation is for you. It's easy to become focused on the numbers—blood glucose, A1C, insulin levels, weight—but understanding metabolic health involves looking at the bigger picture. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Jason Shumard, who has spent more than two decades helping people who feel frustrated or overwhelmed by traditional approaches to Type 2 diabetes. Rather than simply focusing on managing numbers, Dr. Shumard emphasizes helping people better understand their metabolic health and identify factors that may be contributing to insulin resistance. And I love this approach because understanding your health can be incredibly empowering. When we understand the "why," we can start making more informed decisions about the "what." 🌟In this episode, we discuss: What insulin resistance actually means and what is happening inside the bodySome of the common factors that can contribute to insulin resistanceWhy insulin resistance can be more complicated than simply "eating too much sugar"The role that nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and body composition can play in metabolic healthWhy two people with the same diagnosis may need very different approachesThe importance of looking at the whole person rather than focusing on a single lab valueWhy understanding your metabolic health can change the way you approach your healthHow to move from feeling discouraged by your numbers to becoming more informed and engaged in your careOne of the things I really wanted to explore with Dr. Shumard is this: What if knowing your numbers is only the beginning? Your A1C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, cholesterol, triglycerides, and other markers can provide important information—but they're pieces of a much bigger picture. Instead of looking at a lab result and thinking: "What's wrong with me?" We can start asking: "What is this telling me about my health?" That shift—from judgment to curiosity—is an important part of the Direction Not Perfection philosophy. We don't need to understand everything overnight. We don't need to overhaul our entire lives. But we can become more informed, ask better questions, and start making small, sustainable changes that support our metabolic health. A Question to Take With You If you've been struggling with blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, consider asking: "Do I understand what may be contributing to my insulin resistance—or am I only managing the numbers?" That question could be the beginning of a very different conversation with your healthcare team. As always, this episode is for education and conversation—not individualized medical advice. Your diagnosis, medications, lab results, and treatment plan should be discussed with your own healthcare provider.   📌Connect with Dr. Jason Shumard:    • Website:  https://drshumard.com/    • Workshop - Stop Managing Your Diabetes, Reverse it!    👉🌟👉Dr. Shumard would like to offer our listeners 50% off using the code: DIRECTION50 (You can access the offer here: drjasonshumard.com/podcast)   📌Connect with Lindsey House:    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast    • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles  💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Aging in Place: How to Stay Safe, Strong & Independent at Home - with Fee Gentry

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! When we talk about healthy aging, we usually talk about what we can do for our bodies: build strength, improve mobility, eat well, manage stress, and stay active. But what about the environment around us? Your home can either support your independence—or quietly make everyday life more difficult and potentially less safe. 👉In this episode, I’m joined by Fee Gentry, a former physical therapist, entrepreneur, and owner of Handled Home Solutions. With more than 35 years of entrepreneurial experience and a background that includes physical therapy, post-rehabilitation, real estate, and coding, Fee brings a unique perspective to the conversation about aging safely at home. And this conversation goes far beyond grab bars and removing throw rugs. 📌We’re talking about how we can think ahead before a crisis happens and create homes—and lifestyles—that allow us to remain active, independent, and engaged in the things that matter most. 🌟In this episode, we talk about: Why healthy aging isn't just about nutrition, exercise, and strength—it’s also about our environment What it really means to age in placeWhy a fall can affect much more than physical healthCommon fall risks hiding in our homes that we may not even noticeWhy waiting until after a fall or hospitalization can make planning much harderHow strength, mobility, balance, and confidence all work togetherThe importance of being able to perform everyday movements like getting down on the floor and getting back upWhat women in their 40s and 50s can start thinking about nowHow to make proactive home changes without making your home feel like a nursing facilitySimple changes that can improve safety and independenceHow adult children can have conversations about home safety with aging parentsWhy families often wait for a crisis before talking about caregiving and independenceHow we can prepare for the future without living in fear of it The "Grandparent Test"🧠 One of my favorite ideas from this conversation is thinking beyond the scale, the mirror, or even the number on our birthday. Ask yourself: 👉What do I want to be able to do at 70, 80, or 90? 👉Do you want to get down on the floor and play with your grandchildren? 👉Travel? 👉Walk through an airport without worrying about whether you'll be able to make it to the gate? 👉Get up from a chair without assistance?  👉Walk into your own home and feel confident moving around independently? These everyday abilities are easy to take for granted—until they're not. That's why the work we do today matters. We're Not Preparing for a Smaller Life I loved the bigger message that came out of this conversation: Preparing for aging doesn't have to mean preparing for decline. We can think about strength, mobility, nutrition, balance, and home safety as ways to create more freedom, not fewer choices. Because the goal isn't simply to live longer. It's to have the capacity to participate in the life you've worked so hard to build. More travel. More family time. More adventures. More independence. More "yes" moments. And maybe that's what healthy aging is really about. A question to think about: What is one thing you can do today to make your future life a little easier, safer, or more independent? 📌Connect with Fee Gentry: Website: HandledHomeSolutions.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@handledhome Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/handledhomeofficial/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/handledhomeofficial?_rdc=1&_rdr# 📌Connect with Lindsey House:    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Your Nervous System & Food: A Somatic Approach to Breaking the Diet Cycle- with Stephanie Mara

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! What if going back to another diet isn’t a failure of willpower—and it isn’t self-sabotage? What if your nervous system is playing a much bigger role in your relationship with food, your body, and your desire to start over? In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey sits down with a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor who is pioneering the intersection of somatics, nervous system science, trauma work, and nutrition. Her work brings together pieces that are often addressed separately. You may understand nutrition but never explore what is happening in your nervous system—or you may work on trauma and somatic awareness without addressing the nutrition behaviors that are keeping you stuck. Together, we explore what happens when we look at the whole picture. 👉In this episode, we talk about: The connection between the nervous system, food, and body healingWhat your food behaviors may actually be trying to communicateWhy returning to another diet may not be a matter of self-sabotageWhy we continue reaching for diets even when we intellectually know they don’t workThe connection between dieting and traumaHow the nervous system can pull us toward familiar behaviors and patternsWhy knowing what to do isn’t always enough to change a behaviorHow stress, safety, emotions, and past experiences can influence our relationship with foodWhat it means to work with your body instead of against itHow to approach the cycle of constantly “starting over” with more curiosity and compassionMoving beyond restriction, control, and willpower toward a more sustainable relationship with food and your body🤔If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know what to do. Why can’t I just do it?” this conversation may give you a completely different lens. Instead of immediately asking, “What am I doing wrong?”, we can begin asking: “What is my body trying to tell me?” That shift—from judgment to curiosity—can open the door to understanding the patterns underneath our food behaviors and creating change that feels more sustainable. 👉Because sometimes the answer isn’t another diet. 💛Sometimes the next step is learning how to listen to your body. 📌Connect with Somatic Nutritional Counselor, Stephanie Mara:    • Website: https://www.stephaniemara.com    • Podcast: https://www.stephaniemara.com/podcast    • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafox 📌Connect with Lindsey House:    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1    • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Vanity vs. Vitality: What’s Really Driving Your Health Choices?

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 🤔Vanity vs. Vitality: What’s Really Driving Your Health Choices? What if the reason you resist certain healthy habits has less to do with discipline—and more to do with the story you've attached to them? Sometimes the behaviors we associate with health and fitness can carry a lot of emotional baggage. Maybe you grew up watching someone obsess over their weight and exercise, and you promised yourself you would never become that person. Maybe you've watched a spouse become consumed by workouts, macros, supplements, or their fitness tracker and decided that lifestyle isn't for you. So what happens when something that could actually support your health starts to feel like vanity, obsession, selfishness, or sacrifice? In this episode, we're unpacking the idea of Vanity vs. Vitality and exploring how our past experiences and subconscious stories may influence the health choices we make today. Because taking care of yourself doesn't have to be about looking a certain way. It can be about having the energy, strength, mobility, health, and confidence to fully participate in your life. 👉In this episode, we explore: How the stories we grew up with can influence our relationship with exercise and healthy behaviorsWhy some women may unconsciously resist exercise because they don't want to become someone they associate with fitness obsessionThe difference between exercising for vanity and moving your body for vitalityHow our partners, parents, and past experiences can shape our beliefs about health and fitnessWhy healthy living doesn't have to mean spending hours in the gym or following a rigid dietThe "helping vs. hindering" exercise for evaluating whether a health behavior actually fits your lifeWhy the best workout isn't necessarily the hardest workout—it's the one that supports your life and prioritiesHow walking, strength training, social movement, and everyday activity can all contribute to a healthy lifestyleWhy the same healthy behavior can be beneficial for one person but feel like a sacrifice for anotherHow to shift the conversation from "How will this make me look?" to "How will this help me live?"Applying the vanity vs. vitality framework to nutrition, sleep, stress management, boundaries, therapy, and other areas of health📌A question to journal about: Think of one healthy behavior you've been resisting. Then ask yourself: What story have I attached to this behavior? Where did that story come from? And finally: Is this behavior helping me or hindering me? What would change if you stopped viewing it through the lens of vanity and started viewing it through the lens of vitality? Because maybe taking care of your health isn't about becoming smaller, looking younger, or finally achieving the "perfect" body. Maybe it's about having the strength to travel. The energy to keep up with your kids. The mobility to get down on the floor with your grandchildren. The health to say yes to the things you love. And the confidence to live your life fully. That's vitality. And that's a very different reason to take care of yourself. 🔗 Connect with Lindsey House    • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com    • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work, sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Stop Putting Yourself Last: How To Reconnect with YOUR Needs - with Psychologist, Dr. Laurie Bruce

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! Listen to Dr. Laurie Bruce's podcast "From Both Sides of the Couch" 🤔⁉️ What happens when you become so good at taking care of everyone else that you lose touch with yourself? For many women—especially in midlife—it can be surprisingly difficult to answer a simple question: “What do I need?” You may be the person everyone counts on. The caregiver. The problem-solver. The mom, partner, professional, friend, or daughter who always seems to know what everyone else needs. And while there is nothing wrong with caring deeply for the people in your life, it can become easy to put your own needs, desires, and identity somewhere at the bottom of the list. Eventually, you may find yourself wondering: When did I stop checking in with myself? What do I actually want? And how do I learn to trust myself again? In this episode, we explore what it means to reconnect with yourself—not by completely changing your life, but by becoming more aware and intentional within the life you already have. Dr. Laurie Bruce and I talk about why women can lose touch with themselves, the impact of caregiving and being “the one everyone depends on,” and how mindfulness can help us slow down enough to actually notice what we need. 🌟In this episode, we explore: Why women can lose touch with themselves as their roles and responsibilities evolve How being the person everyone depends on can affect your own identityThe difference between knowing what you need and simply doing what everyone else needs from you How to begin reconnecting with yourself in midlife What it means to know, love, and trust yourself again Why self-trust can become difficult—and how we begin rebuilding it How mindfulness can be much more than meditation or stress reduction Using mindfulness to become more present in the middle of a very full life Why you may not need a different life—you may simply need a different relationship with the life you're already livingHow to stop waiting for the next milestone, season, or accomplishment to finally feel happy Small ways to begin listening to yourself again👉🧠A question to take with you: If everyone else's needs were temporarily off your plate, what would you notice about your own? Aging After 40: What Your Skin, Metabolism & Stress Are Trying to Tell You

Send a text for comments or topics ideas! Have you ever felt like your body suddenly changed after 40? Your skin looks different. Your metabolism doesn't seem to respond the way it used to. Stress hits harder. Recovery takes longer. And the strategies that worked in your 20s and 30s don't always work anymore. In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey sits down with Jonathan Carp, MD, a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician, to explore what may be happening beneath the surface. Dr. Carp takes a practical, sustainable approach to health and focuses on the connection between skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, aging, and lifestyle. His perspective challenges us to look beyond quick fixes and become more informed participants in our own health. Together, Lindsey and Dr. Carp explore why aging can feel so different after 40—and what our skin may be able to teach us about the aging process as a whole. 👉In This Episode, We Discuss: Why women may feel like their metabolism and skin change almost overnight after 40What aging skin can teach us about the broader aging processThe connection between skin health and overall healthHow nutrition and lifestyle patterns influence how we age, feel, and functionThe relationship between stress, nervous system overload, and the skinHow chronic stress can show up physically in the bodyWhy sustainable lifestyle changes matter more than rigid diet and wellness rulesHow to become more of an authority in your own healthWhy understanding your body can be more powerful than constantly searching for the next quick fixWhat dermatology and lifestyle medicine can teach us about healthy aging after 40📌Meet Jonathan Carp, MD:  👉https://www.wederm.com/provider/jonathan-carp-md/ Jonathan Carp, MD, is a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician focused on the intersection of skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, and sustainable wellness. He is also the founder of Miracle Noodle and Miracle Living. Through his clinical work and educational platform, Dr. Carp helps people understand how lifestyle patterns can influence not only how they look, but how they age, feel, and function over time. The Takeaway Your skin may be giving you clues—but the bigger conversation is about your whole body. Aging well isn't about finding the perfect routine or fighting every sign of getting older. It's about understanding how your nutrition, movement, stress, recovery, and daily habits influence your health over time—and using that information to make sustainable choices. You don't need to be perfect. You need to understand your body, take ownership of your health, and keep moving in the right direction.
