Financial Ghosts: What Your Old Accounts Are Hiding

What if the biggest skeleton in your financial closet is money you forgot about? I tried the government’s retirement-account search tool and found a lead on a $15,000 401k from my very first job. Matt and I get into the financial ghosts that follow you through job changes, family changes, and old account decisions, including one beneficiary mistake that can make life miserable for the people you love. Finding the account is only half the story. You still have to figure out what to do with it. Come see what might be hiding in your own financial past. A Five Minute Task for Your Family: Check Your Beneficiaries Draft email to loved ones: Hi everyone, Here's a little financial housekeeping task that could save our family a lot of headaches down the road. Please take a few minutes to review the beneficiaries listed on financial accounts and make sure everything is up to date. A few things to check: Retirement accounts: Review the beneficiaries on your 401(k), IRA, and other retirement plans.Bank and investment accounts: Check whether you've designated beneficiaries where the account allows it.Life insurance: Make sure the people listed on your policies are still the people you want to receive the benefits.Life changes: Think about whether marriages, divorces, births, deaths, or other family changes mean any designations need updating.Primary and contingent beneficiaries: Check both who inherits first and who inherits if your first choice can't.Per stirpes: If this option appears, understand what it means for your grandchildren or other descendants before selecting it. One important reminder: Your will doesn't necessarily control who inherits accounts with named beneficiaries. Those designations generally take precedence, so it's worth checking them separately. Most financial institutions let you review and update beneficiaries through your online account. You don't have to tackle everything at once. Even checking one account today is a good start.
