    The Alcohol-Free Camino

What happens when you bring a group of alcohol-free adventurers together and walk 119 kilometres of one of the world’s most ancient spiritual paths? I recently returned to the Camino de Santiago, this time with seven fellow pilgrims, for five days of walking, talking, reflecting and experiencing everything this incredible journey had to throw at us. And there was a lot to reflect on. In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I’m taking you onto the Camino with me to explore one of the less obvious gifts that can emerge from going alcohol-free and how it can start opening doors to experiences you might once have talked yourself out of. I’ll also share some of the lessons my fellow pilgrims taught me along the way, a rather convincing cheesecake mirage and the moment our peaceful adventure suddenly descended into complete chaos. What You'll Learn: One of the most overlooked gifts of going alcohol-freeWhat walking the Camino can teach us about ourselvesWhy adventure and reflection can be such a powerful combinationSome unexpected lessons from my fellow pilgrimsWhat happened when things didn’t quite go according to planTimestamps: 00:00 – 04:00 The Alcohol-Free Camino begins 04:00 – 09:00 An overlooked alcohol-free advantage 09:00 – 17:00 Saying yes to bigger adventures 17:00 – 24:00 Lessons from the Camino 24:00 – 30:00 Reflections from my fellow pilgrims 30:00 – 33:00 The mysterious cheesecake 33:00 – End The Unexpected Final Challenge  If this episode has got you thinking about your own next adventure, I’m also running a free workshop about coaching. Whether you’re curious about coaching for your own development, want to use these skills in your existing career, or are considering becoming a coach yourself, it could be a brilliant place to start. What One Year Alcohol-Free Feels Like, This Could Be You!

What happens when a 90-day alcohol-free challenge turns into an entire year? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I’m celebrating a pretty special milestone. My little brother Rob and his wonderful wife Lou have officially reached one year alcohol-free. But this episode isn’t only about celebrating them. I want to explore what starts to happen when you stay on this adventure for longer. When you experience the weddings, stressful moments, celebrations and everything else life throws at you without automatically reaching for a drink. Oh, and after my recent trip to Ireland, I also have an extremely important award to announce: the world’s greatest sober dancer. It definitely isn’t me. What You'll Learn: What can happen when 90 days becomes one yearWhy longer alcohol-free breaks can be so powerfulWhat big social occasions can teach you about yourselfWhy the alcohol-free adventure can keep getting betterWhat might be waiting for you further down the roadTimestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 One year alcohol-free 03:00 – 05:00 When 90 days becomes something bigger 05:00 – 09:00 The world’s greatest sober dancer 09:00 – 12:00 The power of going longer 12:00 – 15:00 Why it keeps getting better 15:00 – End The next alcohol-free adventure And if your own journey has sparked a desire to help others and explore becoming a coach, come and experience coaching for yourself through our Foundation Certificate in Coaching. Alcohol-free Weddings, Sober Dancing & Those BIG Social Events

Weddings. Big birthdays. Work parties.  Those BIG social events can be some of the most intimidating moments when you’re going alcohol-free. In fact, sometimes just seeing one in the diary can be enough to make you think, “Maybe I’ll start after that.” But do these occasions really need alcohol to be fun? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I tackle some of the fears that come with navigating big social occasions without drinking, including one of my own that sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud: sober dancing. If you’ve got a wedding, birthday, holiday or big night out coming up and you’re wondering how on earth you’ll do it alcohol-free, this one’s for you. What You'll Learn: Why big social events can feel so challenging alcohol-free How our minds create reasons to keep putting change off Why sober dancing isn’t quite as scary as it sounds A different way to approach your next big occasion How facing these moments can change your confidence Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 The big social event dilemma 03:00 – 07:00 The fears we don’t always say out loud 07:00 – 11:00 Facing the big occasions 11:00 – 15:00 A different way to experience them 15:00 – 19:00 And then comes the dancing... 19:00 – End What happens on the other side And if you’ve ever thought about taking your own experiences and using them to help other people through coaching, you can train with me at Coach Business School. 12 Hours Drunk or One Spiritual Experience

Have you ever looked back at your drinking days through rose-tinted beer goggles and wondered whether you’re missing out? Even after more than a decade alcohol-free, I still occasionally experience those little moments that make me wonder. But what if the story our mind is telling us isn’t quite the full story? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I explore FOMO, nostalgia and those moments when alcohol can suddenly seem appealing again. I also share an experience that gave me a completely different perspective on what we might really be missing out on. And trust me, there’s a story behind the title of this episode. What You'll Learn: Why the past can sometimes look better than it really was How to handle those unexpected moments of temptation A different perspective on FOMO What saying “yes” to alcohol might really mean Why alcohol-free life can open doors you never expected Timestamps: 00:00 – 04:00 The rose-tinted beer goggles 04:00 – 08:00 When nostalgia starts calling 08:00 – 12:00 Are you really missing out? 12:00 – 16:00 An unexpected turn 16:00 – 20:00 A moment I’ll never forget 20:00 – End A completely different way to see FOMO If you’re thinking about turning your own experience into something that could help others, you can also train as a coach with me at Coach Business School. Not Addicted To Alcohol, We're In The Middle Lane!

For a long time, the conversation around alcohol felt incredibly black and white. But what about everyone who sits somewhere in between? Years ago, I started using the term “middle lane” to describe my own relationship with alcohol, and it went on to resonate with far more people than I could ever have imagined. In this episode, I explore what it really means to be a middle lane drinker, why our relationship with alcohol isn't always easy to define, and why there might be another way to think about where you are right now. If you've ever questioned your drinking but felt that the usual labels simply don't describe you, this one's for you. What You'll Learn: What it means to be a middle lane drinker Why alcohol isn't always a black-and-white conversation A different way to look at your relationship with alcohol Why questioning your drinking can be a positive step What's possible when you start seeing alcohol differently Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 Are you a middle lane drinker? 03:00 – 06:00 Rethinking the traditional alcohol conversation 06:00 – 09:00 Is there another way? 09:00 – 12:00 Looking at your relationship with alcohol differently 12:00 – End The growing alcohol-free adventure And if this episode has sparked something in you and you’re thinking about training as a coach, I’d love to help you take that next step. Why You Have A Thinking Problem, Not A Drinking Problem

For most people in what I call the middle lane, changing your relationship with alcohol isn't really about having a drinking problem. It's about having a thinking problem. Over the years, we build beliefs around alcohol. It's fun. It helps me relax. It helps me socialise. But how often do we stop and ask whether those beliefs are actually still true? Maybe alcohol felt fun when you were 19. But 10, 20 or 30 years later, when it's bringing tiredness, grumpiness, hangovers, anxiety, shame and regret, are you still getting what you think you're getting from it? In this episode, I explore why challenging the way you think about alcohol can completely transform your relationship with it. I also share a story from the early days of my alcohol-free journey that reminds us why other people's opinions don't have to define what's possible for us. Once you see alcohol differently, you can't unsee it. And that's when change can start to become so much easier. What You'll Learn: What I mean by the "middle lane" of drinking Why outdated beliefs about alcohol can keep you trapped How questioning whether alcohol is still "fun" can change your perspective Why other people's opinions don't have to determine your future How focusing on the alcohol-free advantage can transform what's possible in your life Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 The middle lane and the thinking problem 03:00 – 06:00 The book rejection that could have stopped me 06:00 – 09:00 Challenging your old beliefs about alcohol 09:00 – 11:00 Seeing the truth and changing your relationship with drinking 11:00 – End The alcohol-free advantage and what's possible without alcohol And if your own alcohol-free journey has inspired you to help others, I'm running my Diploma in Alcohol-Free Performance Coaching this October. You'll train as a life and executive coach while also developing a specialism in alcohol-free performance coaching. Brad Pitt Is Back On The Booze - My Views!

Brad Pitt is reportedly drinking again after around seven years of sobriety, and as you can imagine, everyone has an opinion. So, I thought I'd share mine. For me, this isn't about judging or shaming someone for making a personal choice. We're all wonderfully unique, and our relationship with alcohol is deeply personal. What works for one person might be completely wrong for another. But when someone as famous and influential as Brad changes their relationship with alcohol, it can have an impact. I know this because I've experienced something similar myself. Around 18 months into my own alcohol-free adventure, seeing someone close to my journey return to drinking made me question whether I should do the same. In this episode, I explore moderation, willpower, recovery, personal choice, and why ultimately the only relationship with alcohol that really matters is your own. If your life is better without alcohol, why would you put it back in? What You'll Learn: Why everyone's relationship with alcohol is completely unique Why someone else's decision to drink again can make you question your own My own experience of nearly returning to alcohol Why I believe moderation can become a difficult experiment with willpower Why your own lived experience matters more than anybody else's choices Timestamps: 00:00 – 04:00 Brad Pitt, sobriety and why everyone's journey is different 04:00 – 08:00 My alcohol-free journey and finding the middle lane 08:00 – 12:00 The moment I nearly went back to drinking 12:00 – 16:00 Moderation, willpower and running the experiment 16:00 – End If your life is better without alcohol, why drink? And if this episode has inspired you to explore coaching, I'd love to invite you to discover my training at Coach Business School, including the opportunity to train in life coaching, executive coaching and Alcohol-Free Performance Coaching. Why Moderators Are Liars

Moderation sounds like the sensible middle ground. One or two drinks, stay in control, and carry on. But I think there's a problem with that story. For me, moderation means wanting more of something but using willpower to force yourself to have less. And when willpower inevitably runs low, one drink can become two, two can become five, and suddenly we're wondering what went wrong. In this episode, I unpack why I believe moderation creates more mental noise than freedom, how confirmation bias convinces us we're better at moderating than we really are, and why those people who can nurse one drink all night might not be moderators at all. Most importantly, I explore what happens when you stop negotiating with alcohol altogether and discover the peace, confidence, and freedom on the other side. What You'll Learn: Why moderation relies so heavily on willpower How confirmation bias distorts the story we tell ourselves about drinking Why one or two drinks can so easily become five The difference between a moderator and what I call a "non-drinker in disguise" Why going alcohol-free removes the constant negotiation and mental noise Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 Why I believe moderation is doomed to fail 03:00 – 06:00 Confirmation bias and the moderation story 06:00 – 09:00 Why two drinks can so easily become five 09:00 – 11:00 The "non-drinker in disguise" 11:00 – End Escaping the noise of moderation and choosing alcohol-free If this episode has inspired you to explore coaching, I'd love to invite you to join my Diploma in Coaching & Positive Psychology (DCPP) cohort and train to become a life and executive coach, and specialise in Alcohol-Free Performance coaching.  Apply here: Diploma in Coaching & Positive Psychology And don't forget to follow the podcast so you never miss an episode.
