Ep. 146 – Navigating the Holidays During Cancer: Staying Healthy and Finding Joy

Joy is still possible this season. How do you celebrate the holidays when cancer has changed everything? The holidays are supposed to be filled with joy, but when you're navigating cancer treatment, grief, or the fear of illness, even the simplest traditions can feel overwhelming. I know this firsthand. Kicker was diagnosed with cancer on December 4, 2013, and our family spent much of that Christmas season in the hospital. In this episode, I'm sharing practical ways to approach the holidays with greater preparation and peace, from healthier holiday treats and simple ingredient swaps to travel considerations, hydration, and movement. I'll also share the strategies we used as a family while Kicker was going through treatment. But staying healthy isn't just about the physical side of things. We'll also talk about making room for grief and gratitude, releasing the pressure to create a perfect holiday, and finding joy in the moments right in front of you. Whether you're facing treatment, supporting someone you love, or grieving a holiday that looks different from what you imagined, I hope this conversation reminds you that meaningful moments are still possible.   LINKS Recommended Tools & Resources: Healthy Holiday Meal Plan A collection of nourishing holiday recipes and healthier alternatives to help your family enjoy seasonal favorites while staying mindful of nutrition. Ep. 145 – Ozone Therapy Explained: Potential Benefits, Research, and Integrative Cancer Care with Micah Lowe

Understanding ozone therapy beyond the hype. What if there were more ways to support quality of life while navigating cancer treatment? Ozone therapy is gaining attention in integrative health, but understanding what it actually does, how it works, and where the research stands can feel overwhelming. In this episode, I'm joined by Micah Lowe, founder of SimplyO3, whose journey into ozone therapy began after his brother received a devastating brain cancer diagnosis. What started as a search for ways to support his brother eventually grew into a mission to make ozone therapy more accessible. Together, we discuss how ozone therapy works, the different ways it's administered, and what emerging research suggests about its potential role in supporting quality of life during cancer treatment. We also explore the differences between ozone therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, topical applications, and what families should understand before considering at-home equipment. Whether you're hearing about ozone therapy for the first time or looking to better understand the science behind it, this conversation offers a closer look at an emerging integrative approach and the questions worth asking along the way.   LINKS Guest Links: Mediskill (Ozone Therapy Education): https://www.mediskill.com/ Instagram: micahforhealth   Recommended Tools & Resources: SimplyO3 — Ozone Theraphy Equipment & Supplies Explore ozone therapy equipment and supplies from SimplyO3, founded by today's guest, Micah Lowe. Ep. 144 – Supporting Kids Through Cancer: An Integrative Approach to Treatment

There's more we can support. What if supporting a child through cancer could include more than simply managing the side effects of treatment? In this special episode of Thrive Through & Beyond Cancer, I'm sharing my presentation from The Beljanski Integrative Cancer Conference, where I spoke to practitioners, parents, and caregivers about what I learned while walking my son Kicker through three and a half years of cancer treatment—and what I now bring to the families I support. Throughout the presentation, I walk through the three areas I focus on most with children going through treatment: nutrition, detox and drainage, and environment. We talk about nourishing a body under tremendous stress, supporting the microbiome, keeping foundational drainage pathways moving, and considering the physical and emotional environment surrounding a child. I also share practical examples from my work with families, along with some of the challenges parents and practitioners can face when bringing integrative strategies alongside conventional pediatric oncology. My hope is not that families try to navigate this alone. It's that we continue asking better questions, individualizing support, and creating more collaboration between conventional and integrative care. Because children going through cancer treatment deserve more than simply getting through it. They deserve every opportunity we can responsibly give them to feel supported along the way.   LINKS Recommended Tools & Resources: Pediatric Cancer Patient Workbook A free companion resource to Season's presentation, with practical guidance on nutrition, drainage, and terrain support for children navigating cancer treatment. Ep. 143 – Raw Milk Explained: Safety, the Microbiome & What Families Should Know with Mark McAfee

Not all raw milk is equal. What if everything you've been told about raw milk is missing an important part of the story? In this episode, I'm joined by my longtime friend Mark McAfee, founder of Raw Farm and the Raw Milk Institute, to talk about what actually separates raw milk produced for human consumption from conventional dairy intended for pasteurization. We unpack why sourcing, cleanliness, testing, and how the milk is handled matter so much when choosing raw dairy.  We also get into the microbiome, raw kefir, butterfat, and the bioactive components found in milk, including why raw dairy became such an important part of how we supported Kicker during his three and a half years of cancer treatment.  Whether you already drink raw milk or you're simply curious about it, this conversation will help you better understand what to look for, what questions to ask, and why knowing your source matters.   LINKS Guest Links: Raw Farm: https://rawfarmusa.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raw_farm_usa  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/raw-farm/  Raw Milk Institute: https://www.rawmilkinstitute.org/   Recommended Tools & Resources: LumeBox Red Light Therapy Red light therapy is one of my favorite complementary tools to support healing, reduce inflammation, encourage cellular repair, and promote recovery during and after treatment.   Free Protocol Guide https://yourthriveformula.com/free-protocol-guide   LumeBox Device https://bit.ly/seasonjohnsonlume Use code SEASONJOHNSON to save $260.   Community & Support: Learn More About Biodynamic Wellness: https://biodynamicwellness.com   Connect with Season: Website: seasonjohnson.com Follow along on Instagram: @seasonjohnson Follow Season on Facebook: Season Johnson

Ep. 142 – Cold & Flu Season: How to Support Your Family's Immune System

Build resilience before sickness hits. Cold and flu season can feel completely different when you have a child going through cancer treatment. A virus that might mean a few uncomfortable days for one family can bring the possibility of a hospital stay, treatment delays, and another layer of worry for yours. So what can you do to support your household before sickness arrives? In this episode, I'm walking you through the cold and flu protocol we use in our family, beginning with the foundational support we use proactively throughout the season and what we reach for at the very first sign that someone is getting sick. We'll talk about supporting the body with minerals, whole-food vitamin C, adrenal support, magnesium, vitamin D, probiotics, molecular hydrogen, nebulizing, and red light therapy. I'll also share the specific remedies we consider when those first symptoms appear and how our approach changes once someone is fully sick. Most importantly, I want to be clear about the difference between general immune support for your family and recommendations for a child actively undergoing cancer treatment. Their chemotherapy schedule, medications, blood work, and individual biology matter, which is why their protocol should always be developed alongside a qualified practitioner and medical team. Cold and flu season doesn't have to begin with waiting for someone to get sick. The goal is to build resilience consistently, support the body intentionally, and have a plan in place before you need it.   LINKS Recommended Tools & Resources: Hospital Essentials Checklist A practical guide for families preparing for inpatient hospital stays, including recommended foods, comfort items, and simple ways to create a more healing environment. https://yourthriveformula.com/hospital-essentials   Fullscript (Practitioner-Grade Supplements) If you're looking for high-quality, practitioner-grade supplements to support your health, Season has created a hand-curated Fullscript dispensary with the exact products she trusts and uses in practice. Ep. 141 – When Caregiving Takes Everything: How to Take Care of Yourself Too with Jen Widerstrom

You matter in this too. When you're caring for someone you love through cancer or another health crisis, taking care of yourself can quickly fall to the bottom of the list. Sleep gets disrupted. Meals become inconsistent. Movement feels impossible. And somehow, giving yourself even a little time can start to feel selfish. In this episode, I'm joined by wellness industry leader and celebrity fitness trainer Jen Widerstrom for an honest conversation about what happens when caregivers continually pour from an empty cup—and how to begin supporting yourself without adding another impossible expectation to your life. Jen explains why the answer doesn't necessarily begin with a workout. We talk about rebuilding the foundations of sleep and nutrition, lowering the barrier to movement, and creating simple personal rules that work within the season of life you're actually living. We also unpack caregiver guilt, the pressure to give everything you have, and why taking care of yourself can strengthen your ability to continue showing up for the people you love. Jen shares practical ideas like her three-day movement rule and "love list," while I share the lesson our family learned during Kicker's treatment: sometimes you have to live just 15 minutes at a time. This isn't about adding another thing to your list. It's about remembering that you matter in this too.   LINKS Guest Links: Website: jenwiderstrom.com Instagram: @jenwiderstrom LinkedIn: Jen Widerstrom Youtube: Jen Widerstrom   Recommended Tools & Resources: Arnold's Pump Club A fitness and wellness community designed to make getting stronger simpler, with structured training programs, coaching, education, and accountability. Ep. 140 – Some Days I Don't Trust God: Faith, Fear & Parenting After Childhood Cancer

When fear follows you home. Some days I trust God. Some days I question Him. And some days, after sitting across from families facing devastating diagnoses and impossible decisions, I honestly don't know what to believe. If you've walked your child through cancer, you know that fear doesn't simply disappear when treatment ends. You notice every bruise. A fever can take your mind somewhere completely different. The hospital calling can change your entire nervous system before you even answer the phone. You know too much now to simply go back to the way you thought before. In this episode, I'm talking about the incredibly thin line between conviction and fear. From the outside, they can produce exactly the same choices. But internally, they feel completely different. I share what Josh and I have learned about accepting the fragility we now understand without allowing it to control our family. We'll talk about what we actually can control as parents, why trying to create a perfect health bubble isn't the answer, and how healthy boundaries can coexist with birthday cake, road trips, flexibility, and joy. I also share one of the things I want parents to hear most clearly: you did not cause this. Doing everything "right" cannot guarantee an outcome, and one imperfect choice does not mean you have failed your child. And when it comes to our kids, the goal isn't to make them afraid of food, supplements, or getting sick again. It's to educate them so they can eventually understand and take ownership of their own health. This is also a conversation about faith without easy answers. I'm not going to pretend I understand why some children get sick or why some families experience unimaginable loss. But I am learning that I can acknowledge what I cannot control while continuing to steward the days I've been given. Because you cannot unknow what you know. But fear doesn't have to decide what you do with it.   LINKS Community & Support: Learn More About Biodynamic Wellness: https://biodynamicwellness.com   Connect with Season: Website: seasonjohnson.com Follow along on Instagram: @seasonjohnson Follow Season on Facebook: Season Johnson

Ep. 139 – When Life Changes the Story: Reclaiming Hope, Wonder & What Comes Next with Harris III

Your story isn't finished yet. What happens when life suddenly becomes a story you never wanted to be part of? A cancer diagnosis, a painful experience, or an unexpected season can change the way you see everything that comes next. Even after the immediate crisis has passed, your mind can keep returning to the fear, uncertainty, and worst-case scenarios you learned to anticipate. In this episode, I'm joined by Harris III to talk about the stories we carry and how they shape the way we think, respond, and move through difficult seasons. Harris shares how his unusual career as a professional illusionist eventually led him to study the stories we believe about ourselves. We explore how painful experiences can become deeply rooted narratives, why reclaiming agency doesn't mean denying what happened, and how developing a redemptive perspective can help us relate differently to the hardest parts of our story. We also talk about the difference between worry and wonder. Harris explains why wonder isn't something we have to wait to experience and how intentionally creating moments of awe, curiosity, and possibility can help us imagine that our story may unfold differently than we fear. Because you may not get to choose every chapter that enters your life. But that doesn't mean fear gets to write the rest of your story.   LINKS Guest Links: Website: harrisiii.com Linktree: @harrisiii Instagram: @harrisiii LinkedIn: Harris III Facebook: Harris, III   Recommended Tools & Resources: Start With Wow Harris's upcoming book explores why we've become so focused on knowing how everything works and what can happen when we make more room for wonder, curiosity, creativity, and possibility.
