Why Codependents Keep Choosing Narcissists — and the 11 Stages That End It

Many apologies for the bad audio. We tried to fix it up the best we could.  Ross Rosenberg reintroduces a 2021 video on his 11-stage Self-Love Recovery Program, the treatment counterpart to his book Human Magnet Syndrome, which explains why codependents — those with self-love deficit disorder — are pulled magnetically toward narcissists.  Unlike ordinary therapy, the program has rules, demands commitment, runs eight months to a year and a half, and follows an Eriksonian sequence where each stage must be mastered before the next. Early stages move from hitting bottom and finding hope, through studying the book’s concepts, to treating the condition as an addiction with its own withdrawal symptom (pathological loneliness) and relapses, then to undoing the distorted self-perception produced by gaslighting. Later stages build a non-romantic support system, prepare for the fallout of setting boundaries — anticipating violence, smear campaigns, alienated children, financial and legal sabotage — and then weather that storm and its losses. Inner-child work follows, then a transition into “self-love abundance,” then dating again, which he compares to learning to ride a bike late in life. Stage eleven, he admits, is still unfinished. In this republished video, Ross Rosenberg presents his Self-Love Recovery Treatment Program — the treatment counterpart to The Human Magnet Syndrome, his account of why codependents (Self-Love Deficit Disorder) are magnetically drawn to narcissists. Not conventional psychotherapy, it is a structured, outpatient-style program of 11 sequential stages, seen weekly over eight months to a year and a half, built on Erikson's principle that each stage's challenge must be mastered before the next can begin. The arc runs from crisis to self-love abundance: hitting bottom and reframing victim into survivor; learning the Human Magnet Syndrome; treating SLDD as an addiction, with pathological loneliness as its chief withdrawal symptom; undoing gaslighting; building real support; and preparing for the "narcissistic storm" before setting the boundaries that trigger it. It closes with healing the inner child, reaching self-love abundance, and learning to date and live from it — a final stage Rosenberg admits he is still working out. Deeds, Not Creeds: A Heaven Without God

In “Deeds, Not Creeds: A Heaven Without God,” psychotherapist and Self-Love Recovery Institute founder Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., tells the personal story of how he came to see heaven differently. He was raised in a non-religious Jewish family and as a teenager bought his own “heaven insurance” by trying to be good. He then went through a phase of spiritual searching before science and Carl Sagan led him to humanism. From that journey he offers a vision of immortality that costs nothing and needs no membership: heaven is the sum of the ripples we create.  Ross shows how small, everyday acts of kindness reach outward and last for generations. A smile, an open door, or a word of encouragement to a stressed parent can all start those ripples. His message is that actions matter more than intentions, that we are not our mistakes but the growth that follows them, and that every life, however small it seems, leaves a lasting mark on the world. His presentation occurred at the Unitarian Universalists of Pensacola. For more information: https://uupensacola.org/ SUBSCRIBE and turn on notifications for weekly insights on Self-Love Recovery! Shark Eyes vs. Dead Eyes: The Chilling Truth About Sociopaths and Psychopaths

In this episode, Ross explains antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), better known as sociopathy or psychopathy: no empathy or remorse, chronic dishonesty, and harming others without learning from consequences. Psychopaths enjoy inflicting pain, while sociopaths hurt people simply to get what they want. Unlike narcissists, sociopaths know exactly who they are, and they hide behind a "backdrop," often a partner and family, to appear normal. Ross covers the warning signs, from scripted charm and expert gaslighting to the rare "shark eyes" moment when the mask slips. He also explains why people with Self-Love Deficit Disorder (codependency) are targeted and why leaving takes careful protection. Unmasking Fear: The Biological Link Between Trauma, Pain, & Codependency

Why do so many codependents and people with Self-Love Deficit Disorder live in constant fear, even when they're safe? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Todd Burstain, an internist who spent 30 years treating patients, about how chronic fear changes the brain and hides behind "masks" like anxiety, codependency, and narcissism. We get into why narcissists cope by controlling others while codependents cope by giving in to control, and how PTSD and gaslighting make it hard to tell real danger from old trauma. Dr. Burstain also shares his 10-step path for quieting "fear's voice" and reconnecting with your authentic self, which he covers in his new book, Fear Itself, out November 10. www.drtoddburstain.com SUBSCRIBE and turn on notifications for weekly insights on Self-Love Recovery! Codependency Is Broken. Now What? Ross on "Divorce Like a Boss" Podcast"

On Dianna Romanov's Divorced Like a Boss podcast, psychotherapist Ross Rosenberg, M.Ed., explains his Human Magnet Syndrome theory, that givers are reflexively drawn to narcissistic takers, and why the outdated term "codependency" should be replaced by Self-Love Deficit Disorder. His pyramid model traces the problem from childhood attachment trauma to core shame, pathological loneliness, and an addiction-like compulsion to stay in harmful relationships. His ten-stage Self-Love Recovery Treatment Program, roughly nine to eighteen months of weekly therapy, resolves each layer so people can leave personality-disordered partners and reach lasting self-love abundance. Diana Romanov is a San Francisco family law attorney handling divorce, child custody, child and spousal support, domestic violence restraining orders, property division, and marital agreements. She offers advice and mediation in English, German, and Russian. She holds a family law JD from Freie Universität Berlin and an LLM in US Legal Studies from Golden Gate University School of Law, and received the Justice and Diversity Center's Outstanding Pro Bono Award for Family Law Cases. The Podcaster Who Beat Addiction by Learning to Love Himself | Luke Storey

Ross Rosenberg talks with podcaster and author Luke Storey (The Life Stylist) about his journey from addiction to nearly 30 years of sobriety, and his upcoming memoir, A Horse Named Lonesome. Luke shares how childhood trauma and loneliness fueled his addictions, and how a mushroom ceremony revealed that writing the book was really about helping others heal. He and Ross connect Luke's idea of "disconnection" to Ross's theory of self-love deficit disorder, exploring how shame drives addiction and how self-love becomes protection against relapse.  A Horse Named Lonesome comes out November 17 and is available for pre-order now; find more of Luke's work at lukestorey.com. Luke Storey is a former celebrity fashion stylist turned biohacking pioneer and wellness educator, shaped by his own recovery from addiction. He hosts The Life Stylist, a weekly podcast launched in 2016 with over 700 episodes and 14 million downloads, covering biohacking, trauma healing, and consciousness. The show ranks among Apple Podcasts' top wellness programs, with guests including Robert F. The Human Magnet Syndrome: Why Codependents and Narcissists Attract

Psychotherapist Ross Rosenberg explains why simply understanding a narcissist's behavior won't set you free — real change comes from recognizing your own role in the "human magnet syndrome," the opposite-attraction dynamic that draws codependents and narcissists together like a tango of leader and follower.  Drawing on 37 years of clinical work and his own history with narcissists, Ross traces how childhood attachment trauma shapes both sides: the codependent who learns to please, and the narcissist whose personality disorder forms after trauma so severe it gets buried from conscious memory.  Ross argues that acknowledging a narcissist's own trauma doesn't excuse their harm, and that healing means codependents owning their self-love deficit disorder rather than just blaming their partner. One Day At A Time: Breaking Free From the Narcissist You're Addicted To

In this episode of the Self-Love Recovery Podcast, host Ross Rosenberg — psychotherapist and author of The Human Magnet Syndrome — makes the case that leaving a pathological narcissist isn't just a breakup; it's an addiction recovery process, complete with cravings, bargaining, and relapse.  Drawing on both his clinical work and his own lived experience, he explains why the urge to return is driven by "pathological loneliness," a withdrawal symptom that reopens childhood core shame the relationship had been numbing, and why it typically lasts two to six months.  Borrowing the "one day at a time" philosophy from twelve-step recovery, Rosenberg walks listeners through practical tools — shrinking the goal down to hours or even minutes when needed, riding out cravings like waves, naming the mind's manipulative bargaining for what it is, and building a support network instead of trying to white-knuckle recovery alone — all pointing toward what he calls "Self-Love Abundance," the point at which the narcissist's pull finally loses its power.  SUBSCRIBE and turn on notifications for weekly insights on Self-Love Recovery!
