Navigating GI Issues and Functional Testing for Athletes: A Deep Dive with Alyssa Leib, MS, RD

Digestive symptoms are frustrating - and when you're desperate for answers, it's easy to believe the next elimination diet, supplement, or functional test will finally solve the problem. In this episode, I sit down with fellow Registered Dietitian Alyssa Leib to unpack the overlap between gut symptoms and malnutrition, why chronic under-fueling can mimic food intolerances, and how cutting out more and more foods can sometimes make digestive issues worse. We also discuss the growing popularity of functional testing, when it may be appropriate, where it can fall short, and why nutrition should be part of the conversation before jumping to expensive tests. Whether you're navigating persistent GI symptoms or simply trying to make sense of the nutrition advice online, this episode will help you approach gut health with more nuance, less fear, and a whole lot more evidence. Personal Revelations: Avoiding Relapse in a Culture of Thinness

In this episode, I'm sharing how I hit burnout in May after juggling five jobs, which led me to leave a hybrid longevity clinic role that felt overly metric-focused and misaligned. I'm rebuilding my bandwidth by limiting my client load, scheduling breaks between sessions, and protecting time for writing and the podcast while acknowledging my own compulsive pull toward social media. I talk about why I'm "not for everyone" and why I prioritize weight-inclusive, behavior-based health over reductive data. I discuss concerns raised by articles about GLP-1 medications, including relapse risk for people with eating disorder histories, lack of screening/follow-up, aggressive marketing, and a pancreatitis case tied to GLP-1 use and malnutrition. I also address celebrity extreme thinness, my wedding-related relapse history and current boundaries I'm setting, online harassment, and end with positives: a Jackson panel event, feeling strong in sport, and meaningful client impact.   00:00 Welcome to Pocket Snacks 00:50 Burnout and Bandwidth 02:06 Too Many Jobs 03:20 Rest and Real Talk 04:01 Not for Everyone 05:06 Practice Boundaries 06:47 GLP-1s and Recovery Risks 16:25 Marketing and Media Overload 18:12 Celebrity Thinness Trend 21:19 Wedding Relapse Fears 27:11 Recovery Boundaries Now 28:41 Online Hate and Doubt 31:26 Wins and Closing Thoughts     Articles and Resources Discussed in this episode:  Losing My Friend Over Wegovy: She Hid Her Semaglutide Use, Knowing That I Would Spiral. Fear, Protein, and Power: Unpacking the New Dietary Guidelines

A Dietitian's Take on Politics, Privilege, and Nutrition Messaging In this episode of Pocket Snacks, we're discussing the new dietary guidelines released last week. Nutrition is inherently political, and I call out the role of privilege in nutrition accessibility. The episode delves into the history and current state of the dietary guidelines, highlighting their strengths and shortcomings, particularly focusing on language, marketing, conflicts of interest, and the lack of emphasis on social determinants of health. I critique the new guidelines' recommendations, emphasizing the need for a balanced, evidence-based approach that supports real people and their varied nutritional needs.   Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and Host Background 00:14 The Political Nature of Nutrition 00:41 Overview of the New Dietary Guidelines 02:31 Historical Context of Dietary Guidelines 05:06 Critique of the New Guidelines 07:58 Conflicts of Interest in Nutrition 10:00 Personal Reflections on Nutrition and Integrity 11:41 Marketing and Misleading Narratives 13:36 Social Determinants of Health 18:47 Alcohol Recommendations and Personal Insights 27:46 Final Thoughts and Call to Action   Additional Resources:  The Nutrition Tea Substack - "The Food Pyramid is Back" Dr. Jessica Knurick's Substack - "The New Dietary Guidelines and the 'Flipped Pyramid'" Maintenance Phase Podcast - "Ultra-processed Foods" The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate 2025-2030 Uncompromised Dietary Guidelines for Americans - Center for Science in the Public Interest The New York Times - "Several of Kennedy's Dietary Advisers Have Ties to Meat and Dairy Interests Connect with me!  🔗 Apply to work with me 1:1 🔗 Follow me on Instagram / TikTok DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only.
