    From Addiction to Self-Acceptance: David Deane Haskell’s Story

    In this episode, Kelly and Ian are joined by author David Deane Haskell for a powerful conversation about addiction, childhood trauma, codependency and the work that can begin once the alcohol is gone. David lost his mum at just four years old and later discovered she had taken her own life. He shares how those early experiences shaped the way he saw himself and contributed to a decades-long struggle with alcohol, drugs and unhealthy relationships. But getting sober was only the beginning. David talks openly about discovering codependency, learning to understand the beliefs and behaviours he'd carried from childhood, and how inner-child work became an important part of his recovery. We also explore why removing alcohol can sometimes uncover things we've spent years avoiding, how our childhood experiences can continue to influence us as adults, and why recovery can be about much more than simply not drinking.     This week on Alcohol Uncensored, Kelly and Ian are joined by Millie Gooch, founder of Sober Girl Society and author of the new book Hangxiety, for an honest conversation about the relationship between alcohol, anxiety and mental health. Millie shares her own experience of blackout binge drinking, the crippling anxiety and shame that followed, and why she eventually realised alcohol wasn't helping her mental health - it was making it worse. We dig into the science behind hangxiety, including what happens to GABA and glutamate when we drink, why alcohol disrupts sleep, what actually happens during a blackout, and why anxiety can sometimes temporarily feel worse when you first stop drinking.
