Today, I want us to think about our relationships because they can break or make our well-being. While we are willing to work our butts off and give all our waking time to our jobs, what gives us the most amount of joy, life satisfaction, health, and vitality is our relationships. A Social Epidemiology scientist dr. Leonard Syme of UC Berkeley discovered that the quality of our closest relationships predicts how our immune system functions. Unhappy relationships chronically secrete stress hormones, wearing away our ability to fight infections and destroying our damaged cells. According to studies, people in healthy marriages have more immune cells and get sick 3 times less than people in unhealthy relationships. Having healthy relationships improves our immunity, making us less susceptible to all diseases, and extends our life by an average of 17 years. And, it is true for all, parent-child relationships, siblings, friends, and coworkers. In this episode, I’ll bust a myth about 'toxic relationships', share the 5 Building Blocks for a Healthy relationship of any kind, and the 5-Step Process to heal & grow a stronger relationship after a conflict, Training developed by a Gottman Institute my boyfriend and I enjoyed taking together this past spring. I love science, so I will be sharing research-based data on how we can improve our skills of relating from the work of Dr. John & Julia Gottman and Dr. Stan Tatkin whose books we can all read & benefit from.
