  • The Urgent Lessons of the ’90s Culture Wars

The Urgent Lessons of the ’90s Culture Wars

It is not a happy time to be an arts advocate in the United States. The last year has seen the real threat of eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts, and the spectacle of the head of Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History hauled in front of Congress to be publicly grilled about her programming by Republicans. For many observers, all this is very alarming, but also gives the sinking feeling of having seen this story play out before. You often hear that we are living through a return of the “culture wars,” the turbulent period of very public, very bruising battles over decency and public funding for the arts from the late 1980s and early 1990s. In many ways, what happened back then set the template for the politics of today. This is the story told in the recently published book, The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America's Culture Wars. In it, author Isaac Butler revisits the various battles over the National Endowment for the Arts from of the ‘80s and ‘90s. He joins Ben Davis today to go through this history, and to ask what it can tell us about the present.

1. 100 Objects #21: Window from the House of D

In 1932, the Women's House of Detention—New York City's first women's prison—opened in the heart of Greenwich Village. It was opened to make "wayward" women quiet, private, and properly feminine. And the building had one unique feature originally meant to be a sort of kindness—a special kind of window that the women inside could open. Roman Mars and historian Hugh Ryan trace how those special windows had an impact that nobody could have predicted—helping to build a mecca of gay America and, ultimately, a movement. Vivian Maier: The Art of Seeing | In Conversation with Anne Morin

Few stories in photography are as remarkable as that of Vivian Maier. Working as a nanny in New York and Chicago, she explored the city streets with the children in her care, camera always at hand. From this unique position, she captured the rhythms, characters, and unexpected moments that define urban life. From the 1950s to the 1980s, she created a striking visual portrait of post-war America – one that remained hidden for decades. Discovered only after her death, Maier’s photographs have since secured her place among the greatest street photographers of the twentieth century.  Fotografiska’s major autumn exhibition, Vivian Maier: Unseen Work, presents a comprehensive exploration of Maier’s rich and multilayered archive, offering a captivating glimpse into twentieth-century America and the hidden shadows of the American Dream.  In this podcast episode, curator Anne Morin joins Fotografiska guide and Conversations Ambassador Elo Aun to explore the photographic work and artistic legacy of Vivian Maier, one of the most remarkable figures in 20th-century street photography.  Anne Morin is one of the leading experts on Vivian Maier’s work. She has curated numerous exhibitions dedicated to the photographer and is the director of diChroma photography, a Madrid-based platform dedicated to photography and visual arts.  Recorded in September 2026.    Vivian Maier Unseen Work, 19 September 2026 – 17 January 2027  With an extraordinary eye for everyday life, Vivian Maier captured the streets of New York and Chicago from the 1950s to the 1980s. Discovered only after her death, her vast body of work offers a unique glimpse into post-war American life and has established her as one of the 20th century’s most important street photographers.

838 The Emerson Circle (with Bruce Nichols) | Life Hack! Could This Simple Trick Help You Read More?

What did Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, the Peabody sisters, and Nathaniel Hawthorne have in common? In addition to being literary luminaries who've been famous for nearly two hundred years, they all lived in Concord, Massachusetts, a little town roughly 20 miles northwest of Boston. How did a town of just over two thousand people come to host so many celebrated American writers? And how did their ideas end up changing the world? In this episode, Jacke talks to author Bruce Nichols about his new book The Emerson Circle: The Concord Radicals Who Reinvented the World. PLUS a listener tells Jacke about his years of struggles to read - and how a surprisingly easy trick changed his life forever. On Sale Now! For more information and to order Great Detective!
