Sam Claflin: I calorie count and overthink! What is body dysmorphia?

Do you find it hard to look in the mirror? Have you found yourself controlling what you eat or exercise you do? Actor Sam Claflin has struggled with his body image since he was a child. In this chat with Fearne, Sam explains what having body dysmorphia means to him, and reflects on how it continues to affect everything from the food he eats to his willingness to watch his own films back. Fearne and Sam are both chronic people pleasers, and share how they’re working to stop putting everyone else’s comfort before their own. Sam also thinks about how he was brought up to think about what masculinity is, and what he’s doing to make sure his own son grows up with gentler male role models. You can watch Sam in Vanished on Amazon Prime from February 27th. If you liked this episode of Happy Place, you might also like:   Riley Keogh   Jame Laing   Katherine May Hosted on Acast. Blood Sugar Spikes, Magnesium & Eating Well on a Budget

This week on The Wellness Scoop, we’re answering your questions on eating well in real life, especially when routines are disrupted, budgets are stretched and online wellness advice starts to feel overwhelming. We talk about healthy eating around shift work, whether fruit on its own really causes harmful blood sugar spikes, and how to avoid a whole food approach tipping into restriction or food anxiety. We also unpack the surge in protein-focused TV shows and “nutrient-dense” supermarket ranges, and what’s genuinely useful versus clever marketing. There’s practical guidance on fibre too, including how to lower intake temporarily when advised, and how to reintroduce it without gut discomfort. We answer a brilliant question on magnesium and sleep, cutting through supplement hype to look at what the evidence says and whether food can meet your needs. Finally, we explore smart supermarket shopping, whether budget and premium stores differ nutritionally, what’s worth spending more on, and where you can save without compromising health. Along the way, we share listener tips on affordable swaps and low-tox home choices. Send your questions for our weekly Q&A to hello@wellness-scoop.com. Optimism, Immunity and the Truth About Burning Fat

This week on The Wellness Scoop, we’re talking about whether optimism can influence immune health, what the science really says about exercising on an empty stomach, and why cabbage is being tipped as 2026’s “it” vegetable. We break down new research linking mindset and immune response, look at the evidence on fasted exercise, fat loss, metabolic health and hormones, and explore the rise of fibre, gut health and fermented foods through the return of cabbage to centre stage. We also dig into the darker side of modern wellness, including the rise of extreme detox trends like blood “cleaning”, and why supporting the body’s natural detox systems remains far more grounded in science. Dr David Erritzoe

Today we speak to David Erritzoe (Clin Associate Professor in Psychopharmacology & Psychiatry) . A leading researcher in the science of psychedelics, addiction, and mental health, David joins us to unpack what’s actually happening in the brain when patterns break, beliefs loosen, and change becomes possible. Together, we explore the tension between biology and meaning, evidence and experience — and what modern neuroscience can (and can’t) tell us about transformation. This conversation sits right at the heart of the journey: a moment to question assumptions, re-examine what we think we know about the mind, and consider how altered states — whether clinical, chemical, or contemplative — might reshape the stories we tell about ourselves. David is a highly cited scientist (top 0.1% globally in 2025, Clarivate), and in 2025 received Imperial’s President Award for Excellence in Research, and his team has received several additional awards in recent years. David and his team have been awarded competitive grant & fellowship funding, hereunder from MRC/UKRI, NIHR and Welcome Trust. NICK JONAS: The REAL Story Behind a Lifetime of Fame, His Inner Critic, and How Fatherhood Changed Everything

What happens when success arrives before you truly know who you are. How do you learn to quiet the inner critic while becoming a better partner, parent, and person in the process? Today, Jay sits down with Nick Jonas for an intimate conversation about identity, purpose, and the inner work that comes with growing up in the spotlight. Nick opens up about what it was really like starting his career so young, dealing with rejection early on and growing up with the pressure of being labeled “the shy, creative one.” As the conversation unfolds, Nick shares how fatherhood, marriage, and health challenges have profoundly redefined his priorities. He reflects on the vulnerability of becoming a parent, the anxiety that comes with loving someone so deeply, and the grounding practices, movement, routine, and therapy that help him stay present. Through stories of his daughter’s early days, his evolving relationship with faith, and the inspiration behind his new music, Nick reveals how creativity became both a refuge and a mirror, allowing him to heal, grow, and speak more honestly than ever before. Jay and Nick discuss what it truly means to be a good partner, a present parent, and a kinder version of yourself, especially when life feels overwhelming. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Turn Life’s Hardest Seasons Into Creative Fuel How to Stay Grounded When You’ve Lived Life in the Spotlight How to Be a Present Partner Instead of a Defensive One How to Navigate Anxiety Without Letting It Define You How to Reconnect With the Fearless Version of Yourself How to Build Emotional Resilience Through Routine and Movement How to Show Up as a Better Parent by Healing Yourself First Wherever you are in your journey, know that it’s okay to slow down, ask better questions, and choose compassion over criticism. You’re allowed to evolve, outgrow old labels, and rewrite the way you speak to yourself.  Nick Jonas’ new album, Sunday Best, out February 6th: https://nickjonas.lnk.to/SundayBest With Love and Gratitude, Jay Shetty JAY’S DAILY WISDOM DELIVERED STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX Join 900,000+ readers discovering how small daily shifts create big life change with my free newsletter. Book Club Meets: Grief, women in history, and Elizabethan magic, with Maggie O’Farrell

You might have recently seen Hamnet at the cinema, but did you read the book along with the Happy Place Book Club in January? In this chat, Fearne and author Maggie O’Farrell talk about how Jessie Buckley’s award-winning performance brought Agnes to life in the film, why it’s vital to remember women’s place in history, and why Maggie chose not to name Shakespeare in the book. Maggie uses her intuition when she’s writing, and talks about why she doesn’t really plan what voice or tense to style she’s going to write in. Plus, Maggie reveals some of the Elizabethan pursuits she took up during her research phase, including flying Kestrels and making herbal cold remedies... And Fearne reads out what she reckons is "the sexiest paragraph ever written"! Thank you to Tinder Press for use of the Hamnet audiobook, narrated by Jessie Buckley. Sales Expert Shelby Sapp: The Simple Sales Framework You Can Use in Work, Money, and Relationships (Follow THIS Method to FINALLY Get The Life You Deserve)

We’re not failing at life. We were just never taught how to speak up, handle rejection, and confidently ask for what we want. Today, Jay sits down with sales leader and entrepreneur Shelby Sapp to unpack why sales isn’t about convincing others, but about understanding people, building trust, and believing in yourself. Shelby shares how the skills that helped her go from door-to-door sales to building a thriving business are the same skills we use every day: advocating for ourselves, navigating rejection, and communicating our value. She reframes sales as a mindset shift, from seeing “no” as failure to seeing it as feedback, explaining why learning how to sell is really about learning how to think, speak, and lead with confidence. Jay and Shelby break down the core principles that make sales applicable to every area of life: identifying leverage, creating real value, keeping things simple, and having the courage to ask for what you want. Shelby explains why people don’t buy products, they buy solutions, outcomes, and relief and how rejection becomes easier when you stop taking it personally. They also dive into the deeper mindset shifts that separate those who stay stuck from those who grow. Shelby challenges the idea that confidence comes before action, revealing instead that confidence is built by doing uncomfortable things repeatedly and overcoming rejection. Jay reflects on how sales skills teach resilience, the ability to keep showing up with belief even after setbacks, and why handling rejection well can unlock opportunities in every part of life. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Sell Without Feeling Manipulative How to Communicate Your Value Clearly How to Handle “No” Without Taking It Personally How to Ask for What You Want (and Get It) How to Identify What Truly Motivates People How to Stop Overexplaining and Keep It Simple How to Create Momentum When You Feel Stuck Progress isn’t about perfection, it’s about momentum. Trust yourself enough to ask, to act, and to keep going. The skills you build today will shape the confidence, freedom, and purpose you step into tomorrow.  With Love and Gratitude, Jay Shetty JAY’S DAILY WISDOM DELIVERED STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX Join 900,000+ readers discovering how small daily shifts create big life change with my free newsletter. Dr Alex George: “I Looked in the Mirror and Didn’t Recognise Myself”

On the first episode of Season 10 of Therapy Works, host Julia Samuel is joined by Dr Alex George for an unusually candid conversation about what happens when your inner world starts to feel like friction you can’t push through. Alex shares that he’s currently being assessed for autism, and reflects on how recent ADHD and OCD diagnoses have helped him make sense of longstanding patterns, from rumination and sensitivity to masking and burnout. Together they explore the difference between “being different” and struggling, how grief and trauma can intensify symptoms, and why understanding yourself is often the first step towards acceptance and peace. Julia and Alex also talk about the cost of becoming the “fixer” in a family after the sudden death of Alex’s brother, and the cumulative impact of public scrutiny and frontline NHS work during the pandemic. In the reflective discussion afterwards, Julia is joined by Sophie and Emily to unpack the debate around diagnosis, why it triggers such strong reactions, and how the most useful question is whether something is genuinely interfering with your life. It’s a moving, hopeful start to the season about naming what hurts, finding the right support, and building a kinder world by starting with compassion for yourself. Louise Thompson: Maternity care is bleak! Mental and physical scars of my traumatic birth

Everyone deserves a safe and dignified birth, but when Louise Thompson gave birth to son Leo, she was left with post-traumatic stress disorder. In this chat with Fearne, Louise talks through how her PTSD manifests, the way she disassociates, and the therapies she’s tried to work through it, including CBT and EMDR. She explains why her own experience has led her to petition the government. She wants to appoint a Maternity Commissioner to improve maternity care for mums and babies in the UK. Four years post-birth, Louise is reflecting on the ways she’s grown from her trauma, and is exploring how she can allow herself to slow down while maintaining her ambitious nature. Louise and Fearne also both share how they use busyness as a distraction from their uncomfortable thoughts, and wonder what being ‘likeable’ even means...
