Codependency Is NOT a Control Problem — Critiquing Co-Dependents Anonymous with Chelsey Cole

In this eye-opening conversation, Ross Rosenberg is joined by psychotherapist and author Chelsey Cole to explore why traditional codependency frameworks — including Codependency Anonymous — may actually be doing more harm than good.  Together they unpack the crucial difference between grandiose and vulnerable narcissists, how childhood experiences with narcissistic parents create the Relationship Template that drives adults straight into toxic partnerships, and why CoDA's Step One amounts to institutional gaslighting by framing the codependent as the one with a control problem.  Ross also explains the origins of the term "codependency" and why Self-Love Deficit Disorder is a far more accurate and empowering lens for healing. Chelsey shares her own journey — from narcissistic relationships to founding her Rewired for Resilience program — and the three phases of recovery she outlines in her book If I'd Only Known.  If you've ever wondered why you keep attracting the wrong people, no matter how hard you try, this conversation will give you the missing piece. Chelsey Brooke Cole is a licensed psychotherapist, Certified Partner Trauma Therapist, and best-selling author of If Only I'd Known! How to Outsmart Narcissists, Set Guilt-Free Boundaries, and Create Unshakeable Self-Worth. Specializing in narcissistic abuse and complex trauma, her work has been featured in USA Today, HuffPost, and Psychology Today. Through her speaking, writing, podcast, and healing programs, she supports thousands of survivors daily — as host of Restoring Resilience and creator of Rewired for Resilience: Reclaiming Yourself After Narcissistic Abuse. The Invisible Prison Narcissists Build Inside Your Mind: The Silent Trap

Narcissists trap their partners through gaslighting and psychological manipulation, causing victims to doubt themselves and believe they are the problem. The relationship often begins with intense attraction that feels like meeting a soulmate, but over time the narcissist reveals manipulative behavior that isolates and controls the victim. Many victims are vulnerable because of childhood experiences with narcissistic parents, which taught them to sacrifice their own needs for love. As the narcissist distorts reality and cuts the victim off from support systems, the victim becomes dependent and afraid to leave. The speaker argues that escaping this “silent trap” requires therapy, healing childhood trauma, and developing strong self‑love and self‑respect. Why Chronic Pain Isn’t Imaginary: The Mind Body Link

Ross interviews Dr. Dave Clark, a physician who specializes in "neuroplastic symptoms" — real physical conditions like chronic pain, migraines, and fibromyalgia that are generated by the brain in response to unresolved stress, trauma, and adverse childhood experiences rather than structural or organ disease.  Research shows that 88% of chronic spine pain is brain-generated, and a landmark study found that neuroplastic therapy reduced pain by 75% in just four weeks among patients who had suffered for an average of a decade.  Dr. Clark directs people seeking help to the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms at symptomatic.me, which offers a self-assessment quiz, practitioner directory, and a variety of resources. Why Your Childhood Controls You | Coherence Theory Explained

In this episode, Ross Rosenberg sits down with licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Steven Ross for a deep and insightful conversation about Coherence Therapy and how childhood trauma shapes our beliefs, emotions, and adult relationships. Together, they explore how early attachment experiences create unconscious narratives that influence codependency, anger, shame, and attraction to narcissistic partners.  Drawing from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and humanistic approaches, this interview sheds light on why our coping strategies once made sense—and how true healing comes from revisiting, understanding, and transforming the emotional learning of childhood. Five Signs It’s Codependency, Not Love

Ross Rosenberg shares five signs that what feels like love is actually codependency. The intense chemistry you feel with a narcissist is a mirage driven by the Human Magnet Syndrome and limerence, not real love.  The five signs: the "soulmate" feeling is really addiction and trauma response; your partner drops their mask, revealing a cellmate, not a soulmate; you stay due to fear of pathological loneliness, which is a withdrawal symptom; you keep falling for the same narcissist with a different face; and no amount of love you give is ever reciprocated.  Healthy love is a mutual exchange of love, respect, caring, trust, and protection. Codependency, rooted in childhood attachment trauma, can be healed through dedicated treatment. Stop blaming yourself—you deserve self-love, abundance, and real love.
